I would use what you have on hand.  Just about anything works for a small relay.  As some have pointed out, for larger relays something with more current capacity would be better.  I have used "mystery diodes" from my junk box for this purpose.

I'd like top know if the diode I use across a relay coil matters. I.e I would normally use a 1N4001 but I have access to a bunch of 1N4148s, does it matter which I use?...
