Look over on the Bayou Jumper Group... there have been some posts that addressed this... including making a little keying circuit to help out

Basically, any excess resistance in the key cables, key jack, front panel to main board connections, key contacts, etc will introduce a voltage drop... remember that about 700 mA has to pass that way. So even 2 ohms means 1.4 V lost to the PA.

BE sure the posts that join the front panel to the main board are good and tight. Use at least #18 or so wire to the key, keep the leads as short as is convenient. Be sure key contacts are clean and bright.
