I just cut the pins on the chip I am removing then clean the holes.
 
I them use a solder sucker and de-solder braid.

You definitely need the full size solder sucker. Those little ones just don't do the job.

If you meant the solder sucker, Brian, the one I recommended works well enough to successfully remove 14 pin ICs ( with some final help from a heat gun) and leave the holes clean when you put the correct component in place.  Those little Radio Shack jobs were toys by comparison.
