That still sounds a little weak to me, although I'm not an AM expert.  A -73 dBm signal is S-9, so you'd think it would be pretty solid. No doubt the % modulation of the signal would come into play. It might be hard to judge the sensitivity of the rig with an unmodulated test signal.

I looked at the manuals for the K3 and for the Drake 2B and neither differentiated among different types of signals in their sensitivity specifications.

That's probably OK.  Typical gains for AM detectors run about -15 dB, that is, 15 dB of loss. You'll see much the same behavior reflected in Elecraft's sensitivity specs for AM reception.
