   w0rw/pm using a Viet Nam PRC 74 backpack radio in the QRP Afield event,

  19 Sept 2020, Saturday.
Times & Freeks:  1730z  - 1930z, 14061 kHz +/- 5.

   Equipment:  PRC74B, a solid state, fully synthesized, 1964 military backpack radio.  

This radio spent 40 years in a junk yard and is now back on the air !

   It is mounted on an ALICE backpack frame with the AS-1887A, 8 foot antenna, and a ground wire. It is connected to an Elecraft T-1 tuner to get the final antenna match. The entire rig weighs about 30 pounds (Heavy Metal) and that's with the light  Li-Ion (3S7P) battery pack.

   The PRC74 is a Special Forces Radio used for long range military comms.

   Don't forget to get your telescope out to find Mars. It is nearing maximum  apparent diameter. Look for it in the East at 9pm. The best telescopic time will be 2 to 4 a.m. in the South. See S&T Magazine, October 2020, edition.
