Fw: [QRP-L] Solar power for the rig?

I reposted Mert's sage advice here because some of us may be bringing solar
panels to Brutus. Mert is a Four State member, regular Ocon attendee and has
published many articles. All that plus being a great guy. Thanks for the solar
cell charging tip Mert.

| Hi Terry,
| I have used both PWM and pass transistor (linear) control for my solar
| panels. I prefer the pass transistor because it causes no R.F.
| interference. Yes, it needs a heat sink and dissipates some power but all
| power is free anyhow. My pass transistor is a 2N3055. Of course, I am only
| charging a 7 Ah battery so only about an amp max. But I guess if I need
| more current, I will parallel some transistors or get larger ones. The
| circuit is the same as any linear regulator power supply. Simple and
| trouble free. I don't like to deal with RFI from the switchers.
| Have fun. 72 Mert W0UFO

|
| I have been considering a small solar cell powered setup for the shack.
| In the process of studying the possibilities of how to do it, I have
| seen references to charge controllers using PWM saying you can turn them
| off for communications periods or they have minimized the impact on
| communication installations.
|
| I'm getting the idea they are pretty noisy electrically. I have no
| experience with them.
|
| Is there anyone out there who has used a solar panel or other
| alternative power source and a PWM charge controller that can give me
| some idea as to how significant it is or is not.
|
| Terry, KQ5U
