Oscillator Suggestions

Tim N9PUZ

Good evening gang. Well, we got plenty of snow here in central Illinois. In between other projects and naps I've been thinking about some different projects.

Any suggestions for a moderately simple transistor based (vs. an I.C. of some sort) audio oscillator? I'd like something for a practice oscillator, sidetone, etc. that isn't all raspy and nasty sounding like a 555 timer based circuit. Doesn't have to drive a speaker directly, I'd just like a nice sine wave that I could couple into a separate small amp.

They say we're due for 5 more inches. That would put it at about 17" but I doubt we'll get that much. Problem here is that the city & county don't know how to deal with it when it gets this deep. Wind is horrible. Temperature is 31 F. Supposed to warm up so it won't be around long but while it is! Whoo-wee! Lot's of fender benders and the local authorities have been on TV saying stay home.

I fixed the screen on my granddaughter's netbook today. This is the second time I've had to fix it! Ugh...
But what are you going to do?

I dug out a Taurus SSB  that I'm trying to build for 40 meters. Trying to figure out where I left off and trying to verify everything I need to "change" to put it on 40.

Looking forward to O'con. We're close now.

I just finished my 20M Wilderness SST this weekend. Only took me a couple years to get the time to get it all done. I wanted to get it done in time for Ozarkcon. Now I just need to get an antenna done and find my dummy load. I'll post pics online soon.

No snow or ice in central Arkansas, but it was kinda cold and windy. I'm still working on that Argonaut 505 a bit. And trying to fix my daughter's iPod Nano. (Gonna need a stronger jeweler's loupe!)

Yesterday I made a little one transistor oscillator - transmitter for AA1TJ's Vanguard project and today I spent some time CQing with it. 30 mW out on 20 meters. Here's a blog description:

When you fold the wire in half and slip it through both holes, that is one turn.  Loop both ends through the opposite holes  and you have two turns... etc.  Every time the wire passes through both holes is a turn.  If you have an even number of turns, your wire ends will exit out the side you began.

With a donut toroid, every time the wire passes through the hole is a turn.

An electronic keyer specifically for my Swan 700cx.

Using the Island Keyer II, a small audio amp from Kitsandparts
and HamGadgits keying adaptor.

Front panel pots for On/Off and volume, weight, tone and speed,
as well as momentary switches as required by the keyer.

My 700cx sidetone leaves a lot to be desired so desided to build
up a keyer with sidetone. Rear panel will have jacks for power,
paddles, bug and line out.

Working on the screen print now for both panels. Publisher does
a good job for that.

I've got a PigRig waiting in the wings but this one is the PigRig Plus.

Just need to get it going. Doesn't seem like I can get my teeth into
that one. It's has 72 seperate roids in it. OUCH.. Makes my fingers
hurt just thinking about it. LOL

I don't know if a picture will make it through the reflector but
I attached one of a previous rig. 60 roids on the filter boards
alone. :(

I've got all the metal for the encloure waiting. Will someone send
me on of those ROUND TO IT's LOL

Haven't even tried to dig out here in Iola yet.  And my ground-mounted 5BTV won't tune up, so I suspect the snow is covering enough that it's shorting at the feedpoint - oh the troubles of a ground-mounted vertical!  Wish I still had my Ultimax 100 in the air, but pulled it down last fall for a special event station and never have raised it again.  Oh well,
