Boomers in the Heartland Tonight

WA0ITP

A line of thunderstorms is moving steadiy Eastward from the West edge of the great state of Iowa. Individual storms are moving to the North, but the line is advancing to the East, and the QRN level is S8 on 40M and S9+ on 80M. I'll try to call the net anyway, but may have to unhook. If so, I'll post a note on the reflector.

Last FOXHUNT of the Winter Season

Dale Putnam

Come and join us in the last fox hunt of the winter season!

I will be one of your two foxes this Thursday evening in the 80M woods. Todd, N9NE, is taking the other slot. The hunt begins at 7 PM MT (0100z Friday) and runs ninety minutes to 0230z. We'll be hiding out between 3550-3570 KHz.

I'm located Northeast of Cheyenne, Wy. Just past the broken fence post on the right..  lean a bit southwest as you come up the road, and dodge the drift at the end of the drive. (have 8 - 10 inches of snow with 40mph breezes now)

I'll start operating split and will only go simplex when the 'pile' evaporates. When simplex, please call off my frequency a bit to avoid zero beating me.  I will check simplex through the hunt too.. for those simplex radios.

You know the drill: RST, State or Province, Name, Power. Make sure you hear me send confirmation (TU, QSL, etc.) before turning the dial.  i.e.  589 Wy LEE 5w.

Propagation has been a challenge these last few weeks, but I'll make every effort to get you in the log, even tho we will be starting before the grey line gets here.

Setup here is a K2 @ 5W to a 350ft doublet at 55'. It and the ladder line will be covered with new snow ... we are forecast to get over a foot of snow that started at 5 am Wed morning ... March Madness indeed!

This year.. the Easter Bunny is a SNOW SHOE rabbit.

Good Luck and May the Props  be ever in YOUR Favor

3 days left to Preregister for OzarkCon, Pse read this note !

WA0ITP

GM All,

There are only  3 days left in which to preregister for OzarkCon.

It's great to see the preregistration numbers continuing to climb, it's at 142 now - an all time high.  Thank you all very much, this will be the best attended conference yet.  We, and the Stonecastle,  can accommodate at least 200 attendees at the conference itself.  If the Stonecastle fills up, there are Several motel/hotels within short walking distance (about a half a block, across the street, up the hill, across the parking lot, etc).  This isn't the main season for Branson, but the restaurants are open, shows are starting up, and the malls and shops are open fpr business.   You should be able to walk into nearly any motel and find a room. So if you haven't considered attending, pse do so, and preregister if you do decide to attend.  It helps us greatly in our planning.

Preregistration has several benefits:
.  You receive a personalized info packet at the booth in the lobby.
.  It's the only way to purchase banquet tickets (we need to plan ahead for the caterer).
.  You'll receive a nice souvenir badge and lanyard with your call sign and name, and the Saturday agenda on the back.
.  You can reserve "swap and shop" tables. None left for this year, sri.  BUT you can share with another person who has some space, just ask around.
.  Preregistrants receive more prize tickets than walk-ins. (4 vs 2)
.  It's cheap ($11), and cheaper than walk in registrations ($15).  The preregistration price has remained the same for all of the previous 13 conferences.

Bring along your QSL and eyeball cards to exchange.  Lotsa fun, be sure to ask me for mine.
Thank you all very much for making OzarkCon the great event that it has become - the largest and best QRP Conference in the Central time zone :o).

I see that we have at least six, very nice, CW keys to be given away this year (Palm, Begali, N3ZN, Morse Express, etc.)
The other ninety prizes are pretty nice too (don't forget the Elecraft KX3!)
There will be a lot of very happy campers coming away from Branson this year.

You should be able to manipulate the pictures to a size that shows detail. And the groups of books, big enough you can read the title and author, I hope.

Below, I’ll paste in my descriptions of the items.

If you want to buy one or more, email off list to nick-wa5bdu@... or kennnick@... . First off-list request, first served.

Questions welcomed.  If you want to see the manual and I’ve indicated I have an electronic version, let me know and I’ll email it.

OzarkCon for sale List

Disclaimer – This is stuff in the attic. Where stated, I’ve had the stuff out and fired up, tested tubes, made measurements and so on. But that might have been a few years ago.

HP-200CD audio oscillator. This is a piece of Hewlett-Packard history, descending from their first product. It’s a tube type wide range Wien Bridge oscillator. Note that the cast bezel is busted on the top right corner. It seems intact inside and out, but when I turned put it on the scope, the waveform was flat on one side, so it needs some work or adjustment. I have an electronic version of the manual.  $5.00

General Radio Z-Y Bridge Model 1603-A.  It looks intact inside and out, controls & linkages turn. I’ve never tried to use it. I have an electronic version of the manual. $5.00

Sierra Wave Analyzer Model 121.  This is a strange beast. I’d say it’s a VLF to MF receiver but it’s intended to measure signal strength although it does have an AM detector. An experimenter in the VLF world might be able to adapt its front end selectivity to a receiver. The tubes are there. I’ve powered it up and played with it a little. I was never able to locate a manual. The frequency range, IIRC is about 10 kHz to something over 1 MHz. $5.00

Simpson Wattmeter Model 392. Cool old dual volt/watt meter in a Bakelite case. Note the crack next to the lower meter. Has 130 and 260 volt ranges and 1,000 and 5,000 watt ranges. I have tried it out and indications seemed reasonable. Works on AC and DC. I have an electronic version of the manual. $10.00

Heathkit IP-27 power supply. Nice old transistorized power supply has adjustable current limiting. Output ranges from 5 to 50 VDC and current ranges from 50 mA to 1.5 A maximum. I’ve used this one a bit. The top of the case is funky but not corroded or full of holes. I have an electronic version of the manual. $10.00

Davis Audio Amplifier Model 201A.  Want to try that tube sound? This thing put out about 9 watts before clipping when I tried it. It has three microphone inputs and a phono input in the rear, no doubt for a ceramic cartridge. It uses three 6EU7 dual triodes and two 6BQ5s in push-pull output. Probably needs electrolytics replaced. I have a hand drawn schematic but no manual. $10.00

Dynamotor DM-35-D. This is a hefty unit that might provide B+ to a couple 807s in parallel. It takes in 12.5 VDC @ 18.7 A and puts out 625 VDC at 0.225 A. I spun it up years ago and verified the output after finding it at a hamfest. Internally, it looked like new. Made by Electrolux. About the size of a quart fruit jar. BTW, a Dynamotor is a DC motor driving a DC generator to produce high voltage. $15.

Atmel Butterfly development board, on a prototype board. The Atmel Butterfly includes a display, tiny joystick, and other stuff for the programmer. I started with Steve Weber’s DDS code and added the ability to use a rotary encoder and to switch between the NJQRP DDS-30 (AD9850) and DDS-60 (AD9851) synthesizers. DDS not included, but the board has the header ready for one. Note that the original code also includes a nice keyer. Sorry about the upside down photo. $10.00.

Reel-to-Reel tape recorder (Wollensak).  I bought this at a hamfest a few years back so I could check on some old tapes I had. Now it’s excess baggage. I think it’s mono. I think it’s tube type.  That shows how much I know. It smells like 3-in-1 oil when it gets warm. Includes handsome slip cover.  $5.00

Books and MORE BOOKS!  The story (mostly) is that my neighbor was moving and didn’t want to haul his old technical and engineering books he’d been buying in thrift shops and book stores for years. So he dumped them on me. And now I want to dump them on you. I hope you can read the titles and authors in the two photos. If not or you need other info about one of them, let me know. $1.00 each.

HW8 on the air last evening

Wayne Dillon

Hi Folks,
Mucho fun last evening. I have at last replaced EVERY coax patch cable in the shack so, proceeded to test the new installation and pronounced it good. Included in teh new installation is a position on the equipment shelf for my HW8. It produces enough juice to cause my LDG AT100PROII auto tuner so that was a result. Called "QRL ??" a coouple of time and getting no response, irate or otherwise, proceeded to call a 3X3 CQ. What I was after was to get a response from the Reverse Beacon Network to see who, if anyone, was hearing my peanut whistle. Nothing on the RBN but on my first try a station from NC answered. That'll do, that'll do nicely. Now, just to getthe VHF antennas up somehow (6+2m beams and a 2m vertical for keeping in touch with the locals) and it'll be job done.
By the way, if anyone wants an LDG AT100PROII I have a second one whic is at the moment and will likely be in the future, surplus to requirements. E-mail me off list and we'll haggle...

Major SSS announcement!

John Lonigro

Starting with the April Second Sunday Sprint, there will be a new way to log your scores. Thanks to Diz, W8DIZ, we now have a weblog that is fast, easy, and fun to use. No more sending emails to me. If you are familiar with the Flying Pigs Run for the Bacon, you already know how to enter your data. Before the April SSS, I will fill everyone in on the website you need to access. There will even be room for your soapbox comments.

If anyone hesitated in the past to enter the SSS due to reporting requirements, there's no need to hesitate any longer (other than waiting for the second Sunday of April).

More details will be forthcoming, both at Ozarkcon and just prior to the next SSS. Thanks again to Diz, W8DIZ for putting this all together for us.

John, AA0VE

This is a little embarrassing, but I have a kit that looks like it came from 4SQRP, but I can't identify it.  While I can provide a complete parts inventory, here are some basics:

Circuit Board is 1.25 x 1.75 inches

Circuit Board is labeled with 2 lines of text:

     SWL 11/02

     4SQRP 11/13

Major parts include a PIC16C622A 18 pin IC

6A104G contraption that looks like a mica capacitor, but has 6 leads.

4.09 EGJ4 TXT Crystal

KA78L 05AZ IC (5 volt voltage regulator???)

Can anyone suggest what this is so I can get the documentation & put it together?

Thanks

Dave

P.S. Looking forward to Branson
