Re: Need Free Spreadsheet Recommendtion

Both Open Office and Libre CAN write to MS Office formats, just not by default.  If you choose SAVE AS, you can choose modern (DOCX, XLSX) or legacy (DOC, XLS) formats.  If you look in the settings on either you will find that you can DEFAULT them to save in office formats.  I've had great luck with these two free office products over the years, and tend to lean more towards LIBRE, since it is maintained by the original Open Office crew that fled screaming when Oracle took over Sun.  Oracle is more of a religion than a corporation these days.

For a Word replacement I also like AbiWord.  I saw someone mention GnuMeric.  GnuMeric is great on Linux, but the last time I used it on Windows it was a bit horrendous and undeveloped

There's always Google Docs these days too, which with a Chrome plugin can work without an Internet connection.

Tom,

Open Office and LibreOffice should handle databases in almost exactly the same manner.
I would suggest you consult the Help files or the forums regarding what you want to accomplish.
It is *not* the same as MS Works, and while Open Office and LibreOffice can read MS Word and MS Office database files, it cannot write files that can be read by MS Word or MS Office - at least that was my experience 3 years ago, things may have changed since then.

LibreBase handles its native datbase as dBASE but I also use it with MySQL and Oracle.

Need Free Spreadsheet Recommendtion

WA0ITP

GM All,

Thanks vy much to all who responded, almost all recommendations were for either LibreOffice,or OpenOffice. I tried both and found almost no difference between the two for my level of usage, I'm not a power user by any stretch. I settled on OpenOffice, since it was the last one I tried out, so I just left it installed. I set it up to open and save files in the default Microsoft formats and it seems to be doing exactly what I needed.

Thanks again, great Group, great advice.

Re: Need Free Spreadsheet Recommendtion

Greg Troxel

I would also recommend LibreOffice. However, I tend to use gnumeric,
which comes from the gnome world and is much smaller. It can read .xls
and .xlsx, but probably doesn't handle some of the more esoteric
features. It does everything I actually need, including graphs.

I have no idea if gnumeric on windows is easy to deal with. It works
fine on Unix-like systems (Linux, *BSD, and runs on Mac with X).

OK, thanks for the invite but I have some questions.
I've read through this invitation several times...
I understand either of these two foxes could be found anywhere within the range of freqs.
I understand calling a bit off freq. to avoid covering up others and or interfering with the foxes' transmission.
I understand a confirmation is needed for the contact and the information exchange.
AND I understand in theory the reason for the split...BUT how are we to know how much of a split and which way?
AND I am not sure about contact confirmations...I presume we need to keep track of our contact freqs to validate the QSO/QSL but once all this is done and over with...What Then...
Are we supposed to post this information somewhere OR is there some magic thing happening that is not obvious?

Thanks from a neophyte...73

Come and join us in the last fox hunt of the winter season!

I will be one of your two foxes this Thursday evening in the 80M woods. Todd, N9NE, is taking the other slot. The hunt begins at 7 PM MT (0100z Friday) and runs ninety minutes to 0230z. We'll be hiding out between 3550-3570 KHz.

I'm located Northeast of Cheyenne, Wy. Just past the broken fence post on the right..  lean a bit southwest as you come up the road, and dodge the drift at the end of the drive. (have 8 - 10 inches of snow with 40mph breezes now)

I'll start operating split and will only go simplex when the 'pile' evaporates. When simplex, please call off my frequency a bit to avoid zero beating me.  I will check simplex through the hunt too.. for those simplex radios.

You know the drill: RST, State or Province, Name, Power. Make sure you hear me send confirmation (TU, QSL, etc.) before turning the dial.  i.e.  589 Wy LEE 5w.

Propagation has been a challenge these last few weeks, but I'll make every effort to get you in the log, even tho we will be starting before the grey line gets here.

Setup here is a K2 @ 5W to a 350ft doublet at 55'. It and the ladder line will be covered with new snow ... we are forecast to get over a foot of snow that started at 5 am Wed morning ... March Madness indeed!

This year.. the Easter Bunny is a SNOW SHOE rabbit.

Good Luck and May the Props  be ever in YOUR Favor

Re: Need Free Spreadsheet Recommendtion

Don Wilhelm <w3fpr@...>

Terry,

The argument between LibreOffice and Open Office has been going on since Oracle took over Open Office several years ago and many of the developers split and started the LibreOffice project. Speculation on the demise of Open Office as a free office suite have abounded since that time, but still both are a no cost Office suite. I have tried both Open Office and LibreOffice and find they are identical for my purposes, although LibreOffice has corrupted (or does not show) some of the images in my older documents.

I find the Open Office suite more stable than LibreOffice for my purposes, but others may say that the more frequent updates in LibreOffice are good, but I interpret that the result of more "playing in the sandbox" by the developers. If you are using the more recent functions provided by up to date MS Excel, then you may find LibreOffice Calc is more 'up to date' than Open Office Calc.

Try both and take your pick. In either case, go to "Tools" - Options and expand Load/Save. At the bottom under "Document type", select Spreadsheet and in the box to the right find and select Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP and your spreadsheets will be saved with a .xls extension by default instead of the "open document" format. Any format will suffice if you are the only user, but if you send your files to others using MS office, they will not be able to open them. Do the same for Text documents and Presentation documents if you have need for those type documents.

I am running Apache Open Office and am quite satisfied with it, but then I don't do exotic things either. If you expect only compatibility with standard MS Excel, then you should find it present in either, but if you are using something exotic, try both to see which is more closely compatible with your uses.

One very nice feature about both Open Office and LibreOffice is the ability to export in .pdf format. If you want to send the contents of your text document, spreadsheet or presentation to someone without giving them the ability to change it, export it to .pdf and send it as a .pdf file.

The XYL uses spreadsheets more than I do, and she has MS Office 2013 loaded, but with the advent of MS Office moving to 'the cloud' and charging an annual fee, I am trying to get her weaned off MS Excel and steered to Open Office Calc. So far she has not had any problem when we go on vacation and she has only Open Office Calc on the laptop computer. She does have some moderately exotic functions in her spreadsheets, but so far Open Office Calc has had no problem with them - the display presentation is nearly the same as MS Excel and she has had no trouble using that interface - it is almost seamless.
