Hi Chas,

I know it is quite a while after you sent this email, but if you still are willing to send me the pictures of your loop, I’d appreciate it.

School is out now and I am planning to play radio a bit.

I just built my first magnetic loop antenna. So far, I am very impressed with the performance. The cost was less than 1/3 of the Chameleon and 1/4 that of the Alex loop. Except the capacitor box that I built at home with my electric drill, the framework was cut and assembled in my HOTEL room. If you are interested in great loop antenna that is easy to build, and costs < $100 if you have a tuning capacitor and < $150 if you have to purchase the capacitor, then send me an off-list e-mail NK8O at ARRL dot NET and I will send pictures with annotations on what I built. IT REQUIRES NO ADDITIONAL TUNER, and it is multiband. You can tweak it to your own needs.

Chas NK8O

Announcing the KX2 80-10 m, SSB/CW/Data transceiver

Charles W. Powell

From the Elecraft developers.  It’s official.

72,

Chas NK8O

Introducing the Elecraft KX2 transceiver -- the newest member of our compact KX Line. The KX2 has features very similar to the KX3, at about half the size and weight. It fits easily in a jacket pocket. It can even be used hand-held, with a built-in mic to facilitate HT-style operation.

Despite its small size (1.5 x 2.8 x 5.8") and light weight (13 oz.), the KX2 can be configured as a complete HF station, with an internal 2.6 Ah Li-ion battery, wide-range ATU, and attached CW keyer paddle. This greatly reduces the amount of gear and cables needed for field outings. For home and mobile use, the KX2 works with our KXPA100 100 watt amplifier.

The KX2 can transmit in SSB, CW, and data modes at up to 10 watts. This power level, combined with adjustable speech compression, yields a truly effective SSB radio that fits in the palm of your hand.

True SDR (software-defined radio) technology, with 32-bit I.F. DSP., provides features you'd expect to find only in a desktop rig: stereo dual watch, noise blanking, noise reduction, auto-notch, 8-band RX/TX EQ, a digital voice recorder with two transmit messages, and PSK31/PSK63/RTTY text decode/display. You can even use a keyer paddle to transmit in these data modes -- no PC required.

The KX2 covers 80-10 meters (9 bands), maximizing flexibility for field ops, SOTA, micro-DXpeditions, and ultralight hiking/backpacking. Two padded carrying case options are available (CS40 and CS60).

For further details, please visit www.elecraft.com.

3 days to the WBB event is gone and 2 days remaining is half over...

Rex Harper

Gangue,

Yesterday was a blur trying to get all my last minute chores done and everything packed and ready to travel. Worked all day without even stopping for lunch or dinner. Ate a few crackers while I was pushing and shoving stuff into boxes and suitcases. Went home around 11Pm, shoved some clothes into the cases, loaded the car and drove off a little after 1AM. Finally got to the FDIM hotel around 2 Oclock and now I'm right back into it trying to get ready to hand out some WBB kits tonight...

I just posted the PRELIMINARY Sorting and Assembling document here:  http://qrpme.com/docs/WBB%20Sort%20and%20Assemble.pdf

Check it out and be ready to sort and assemble tomorrow.

Less than 24 hours to the big WBB event!

Norm, a good way to save some weight in that go bag would be to make a copy of that back inside cover of the manual and laminate it.  It has all the info you would probably ever need for the K1(great choice of a go bag rig, especially if it has the internal tuner).

Ive used this bag for carry on when I've flown cheapskate airlines and they bill you for everything

You can put the misc. stuff in your packed luggage, but you should take the radios on board with you.  Or at least that is what the TSA recommends. My radios (SDR, KX3, PX3, sometimes a hand-held) sometimes garner a small amount of attention, but generally it is not a problem.  Get either a tool bag, backpack or a gym bag, and pack clothing around the radios if the stuff is loose.  Leave the radios near the top.  That way if they lose your suitcase, you have the important stuff - clean underwear and the rigs.  The rest can be replaced.

I actually have gotten to the point of taking my backpack, with all the actual radio gear, laptop, and iPad,  and a carryon sized suitcase that holds my magnetic loop and most of the other things I need - mostly underwear.  I wear hospital scrubs 99% of the time when I travel so I just need clean underwear and socks.  It works for me.

Finally, Hamlog and Rumlog have versions for iPhone iPad.  I’m sure there are others. I found Rumlog easier to use but that’s because I also use it on my laptop (Macbook Air).
