LIPOs LIFePO4s, and SLAs are all good choices.   Here's a battery like calculator for lead acids that my be helpful. http://www.4sqrp.com/Battery_Capacity/index.php  Also check out this article for more info  http://wa0itp.com/batmon.pdf.

Good luck in your search.

Hi all,

I built a 40m CW transceiver, and so far I have powered it with a 12v wall wart. I'd like to run it off of a battery, and was wondering if anyone could recommend types and suppliers? I think I'd like to get LiPO batteries, but was wondering if anyone had better ideas? The rig takes 12 volts, and I have a voltage regulator that I can install.

Thanks,

For power output, weight, reliability, and safety I recommend looking into LiFePO4.  I have had dealings with Bioenno and they have delivered.  http://www.bioennopower.com.  I use a 4.5 Ah battery with my KX3 but a 2.5 Ah would be plenty for field use. The batteries are rated at their full capacity, whereas lead acid are only between 50-80% of their rated capacity.  How much battery depends on power output of your radio, idling current on receive, and how long you plan to operate.

NESCAF would be awesome, I've been trying to buy a kit for years.  Just when they had kits for sale again, the New England QRP Group web site got hacked at the start of April, and has not been on-line since.

The NESCAF was my white whale, my unobtanium, the one that got away.  I have a 4 State's Hi-Per-Mite to put in the same box as my Grandson of Zerobeat.

I hope your NESCAF finds a home, it looks like new kits are no longer available.

That's not an old radio, that's a replica which was probably made in the 1990's. Back then I used to see a lot of these replica radios. You can tell by the cassette tape port on the side.

This Week's Wednesday and Thursday Nets

w2sh@...

I haven't seen the customary notices from Wayne and Terry, so I'm offering a partial view of these events from a geographically distant perspective.

We are having several days of delightful weather with temperature highs in the mid to upper seventies, bright sun and low humidity.  However, 40m and 80m condx were stinko last night, but rather unusual on 40m this morning.

With lots of QRN, I could only muster a 449 RST for Wayne, and didn't stick around to listen for anyone else.

The QRN on 80m was much worse.  I have never given a 149 RST, and doubt that Terry has ever received same.  The QRN was like being on a rifle range.  The only two letter combinations I copied, each only once, were Terry's "WQ" and "SH".  I made a blind guess that he had acknowledged my QNI attempt, and felt for a Pinocchio-sized nose when I sent "R  R de W2SH."

This morning I bullied my way to the front of the QNI line when I heard Terry at 559, and he reciprocated in kind.  Thereafter WØIIT was 229 and while he was transmitting K2HT, perhaps not hearing Bart, dropped his callsign just once.  At 11308Z K4EQ showing 559 here tried to QNI, but was unsuccessful.  At 1311Z when the freq was momentarily clear K2HT attempted to QNI with a 559/569 sig here, but apparently he was inaudible to all of you who are closer in.  WNØWWY was logged at 339 and WA5BDU at 129.  Later K2HT, with the best sig of everybody, gave it another try.  Terry's sig was down to 339 at 1322Z, but it had a brief uptick to 559 when he closed things down at 1324Z.

I find it unusual for 40m to work over near-kilomile distances after the sun has been up here for four hours, and with the summer solstice less than three weeks away.

We found a stash of 3 or 4 in the "traveling kit box" for ham fest when we were at OZARKCON.
I think we had 2 left, but I am pretty sure they sold at FDIM?
Email Terry WA0ITP direct and ask him to check.

And don't forget the net was on 40 meters at 7070.5
We are experimenting to see if 40 meters will help during the summer months.
The sun is just going down when the net starts and
the storms have made things pretty tough this year.
Hope to see you there 9:00 pm on Wed nights.

Hi Terry....................yes but at this time with my local club, W0UK, in Lawrence, KS.
Hope to work you! I’ll be setting up the CW station, using my old FT-450D.....not
wanting to take my K3 to the field just yet, hi. We’ll run on 40 and 20 meters CW.

Week of Jul 23-30 will have a station set up on the 7th floor of a condo in Panama City, FL, visiting my daughter and grand kids.
I’ll post the op times once I get that worked out. I’ll have a 20/40 dipole taped to the outside window of the condo facing ~ south.
There is a walk-out balcony there so will be easy and safe. I’ll be using my ole K1-4 at 5 to 7  watts. Might be fun if the Hur-WX holds out.
Thought about getting a new KX2 but holding off for now, hi.
