Re: 12 Volt linear (not switching!) wall wart

I purchased several Radio Shack wall warts a while back to replace the noisy ones that came with electronics. Don't know if they are still available but they cut down my background noise substantially. Then we moved to OR coast where salt fog and transformer insulators don't play well together so QRM is back.

I know I can build one - and have done so, and I know "larger" linear power supplies are readily available, but I have several electronic devices scattered about the household that use 12 Volt wall warts that all radiate to some degree. I would like to have quiet, unobtrusive replacements for these.

Chip,

You might want to consider building your own.  Start with an 18-0-18 volt transformer from MPJA (http://www.mpja.com/18V-2A-Center-Tapped-9-0-9-Transformer/productinfo/27843+TR/), a bridge rectifier and filter capacitors, then add a 7812 voltage regulator and you will have a good linear power supply rated at 1 amp (the max rating of the 7812 regulator).  You should plan to add a heatsink for the regulator.

I'm looking for something that gives about 1 amp at 12 Volts and is regulated. Linearly! And is not terribly expensive so I can buy a few of them.

I suppose an alternative would be a very RF quiet switching wall wart if someone has first hand knowledge of one of those......

I have a few 18 volt transformers, 3 at 5 amps and 2 at 2.5 amps, these would make a great supply.

OT: FS: Vibroplex VibroCube paddles

Jim Sheldon

Anybody with a heavy fist like mine and need something that is hard to
move around on your operating desk when you send CW? I have for sale an
excellent condition Vibroplex VibroCube set of paddles. This is actually
the Standard, Upgraded model with the jeweled pivot bearings and the
black crinkle powder coat finish. It's around 2 years old and I don't
use it anymore as I was digging through some old stored boxes from my
military career and I found the old Vibroplex "Vibro Keyer" paddles I
originally learned to send CW on, way back in 1962 so they are now
clamped to my desk.

This VibroCube, serial number 404755, is current manufacture and the
Standard upgraded model sells for $229.95 plus shipping from Vibroplex
(www.vibroplex.com). That's what I paid for it when I bought it around 2
years ago. I'll let this one go for $160 and you pay the USPS (Medium
flat rate box) shipping. I'd prefer to sell this in the U.S. as
international shipping has gotten almost impossibly high priced. I'd
prefer PayPal, but will take USPS money orders.

Please keep any replies off the reflector - email address is
w0eb@cox.net First "I'll take it" (by date/time on the email) gets right
of first refusal. Pictures are available via email.

Our annual Big Brutus Bash will take place again this year during 2nd
weekend in September. The date is always second weekend in September,
so mark your calendars for September 9, 10, and 11, 2016 - and also for
September 8, 9, and 10, 2017. Seems like I Cant Remember Stuff as well
as I could in the past, so for a reminder I always place a note for next
year's items on this year's December calendar page, then transfer them
to the new calendar.

The location is 6 Miles West of K7 & K102 Jct. & 1/4 Mile South.
Near West Mineral, Kansas, which is about 30 miles SW of Pittsburg.

Skeeter Hunt is over - what now?

Larry W2LJ <w2lj@...>

I've been getting several e-mails - "How do you want my log?"

Short answer?

I don't! Please ..... no adif, cabrillo, csv files.

What I do want is your log summary. It' s real easy to send and I'll include the following exmaple (mine):

Larry - W2LJ -TR23 - (Name, Call, Location)
Skeeter #13 - All CW - (Skeeter # and the mode you worked, CW/SSB/Mixed)
Single Op - (Single Op, Multi Op, Multi-multi Op)
Skeeter QSOs - 39 - (# of Skeeter QSOs)
Non-Skeeter QRP QSOs - 1 (# of Non-Skeeter, but QRP QSOs)
Non-Skeeter QRO QSOs - 1 (# of Non-Skeeter QRPO QSOS - NPOTA activators may have had a lot of these)
S/P/Cs or NPOTA Designators - 25 (# of staes, provinnces, countries, NPOTA entities that you worked)
Station Class Multiplier X4 (See da rules fror the categories)
NPOTA Bonus - 100 points (If you activated an NPOTA you get an extra 100 points! See, I told ya to!)

If you do the math correctly (gotta love spreadsheets and formulas!), you'll se my total was 12,100 points.

Log summaries are due by the end of the Sunday before Labor Day. Please remember to include your Soapbox comments and photos if you have 'em. I know that a lot of us in the QRP Community "know" each other; but one of the best things about these Outdoor QRP Sprints is to see how you operated and where you operated from. Please feel free to share, they will appear on the Skeeter Hunt Soapbox page.

I will do my best to post the scores on Labor Day and follow up with Soapbox comments a week or so, later.

And once again, thanks to all of you who make this possible and thanks to the New Jersey QRP Club for their sponsorship!

2016 Peanut Power Sprint

konewt@...

The Bees have swarmed and the Skeeters have been hunted.

Now it's time for a little snack - The Peanut Power Sprint!

Everyone plays... Outdoors, Indoors, lo/hi power... There is even a QRO category.

Sponsored by the North Georgia QRP Club (NoGaQrP), this sprint will be held on Sept. 25, 2016 from 4PM to 6PM EDT,
(Sept. 25, 2016 - 2000z to 2200z). Full rules are on the NoGaQrP website - http://www.nogaqrp.org/PeanutPower/rules.pdf

Your QSO will be worth more if you have a Peanut number; assigned new each year (see below).

The club is making this one different from most other QRP QSO events.

1. It is open to all amateurs at any power level. We do this to attract some new folks to QRP while running their
comfortable power - QRO (<= 100 watts pls). All are welcome. This is a fun event, not cut-throat!

2. It is a short sprint lasting only 2 hours and not tying up the entire afternoon. Although a brief sprint, please
run reasonable CW speeds so that all can copy.

3. It starts late in the day (right after close of TX QSO party!) which means we start at 1PM PDT, later than most contests.

4. There are categories for all situations - the prestigious category in the Peanut Power category - 1W CW, 2W PEP SSB or less
and operating from the field is the GOOBER CLASS! SOTA anyone?

5. Plaques will be awarded for each of 5 category winners (minimum 3 entries).

6. Sprint encourages SSB as well as CW contacts. The exchange: RS(T), State/Province/Country (S/P/C), and your Peanut Number or Power.
Call CQ NUT and have FUN!

7. Multipliers count each band/mode. Work GA (or any S/P/C) on 3 bands and 2 modes = 6 multiplier.
Puts emphasis on switching bands and modes during the event. Check SSB on the quarter hour.

8. This will encourage activity on the 3 permitted bands - 40M, 20M, and 15M. See the rules for the suggested frequencies for each
band/mode. Notice we are encouraging the now almost dead portion of 40M - 7061 kHz and up.

9. Logs are not submitted - simply a score - but keep your log in case it's requested for verification. Watch the NoGaQrP website
for results. There is an online score calculator. It's all on the website - http://www.nogaqrp.org

10. Work stations holding a Peanut Power Number (PPN) for 7 points. Stations worked not having a PPN (they will send power instead)
yield 3 points. Yes, QRO stations may request a PPN. Remember, you do not declare a category until you decide to send in your entry.
If you get halfway through and change your power, simply enter under a different category than your original intention.
