I recall a strip mining device, very similar to Brutus, in rural central Illinois.  Does anybody know where it is?  Is it possible to operate near by?

Johnny et. al.,

What a beautiful day for playing radio, visiting, and eating good food!!  The picture shows me with my mouth open it was that way all day long either talking or stuffing it with delicious food.  Those that have had the pleasure of eating Johnny’s smoked ribs don’t need to be told about them and those that have not had the pleasure let me tell you they are horrible and nasty so don’t show up to indulge in them(I will be more than happy to eat your portion:-)!!!!   Patsy KC5CDE, and I really enjoyed the get-together with other 4Staters.  Yes. the bands were horrible but the chance to be with others that love ham radio and spending time with those that share that love and interest —— PRICELESS!!!!!!

I got to see the little Elecraft KX2 that Walter K5EST brought along for show and tell, and the first homebrew BITX that I have ever seen in person which Tom N2UHC had built and brought to Brutus.  The BITX sounded great and as Tom mentioned — he nabbed the 9/11 special event station with it.  With condx as bad as they were that was a great contact on SSB.  Walter’s first contact with his KX2 and the Alex Loop was with Woody WD9F—outstanding.

Thank goodness for OzarkCon next April, that way it won’t be a whole year before Patsy and I get to share the fellowship of a great bunch of ham radio folks!!

Hi All, yes Big Brutus was a fun gathering as always. Seems rain gets in the picture and this year Friday was perfect for rain, which left the Saturday a great day for flying kites, playing radio, and thanks to Chef Johnny - AC0BQ, the noon  BBQ ribs and brats were perfection! Oh.... can't leave out Pastry Chef Bart - W0IIT with the lemon cake! We 4 state qrp'ers lack nothing when it comes to nutrition.... LOL!

I must apologize to Woody - WD9F, if you look at Johnny's pictures there I am holding an Alex Loop trying to chase the key paddles and make a QSO with Woody. Being the excellent ham that Woody is, he read between the dits n dahs for a good QSO!

Only had a few pictures to show, this year I actually set up and got on the air instead of taking pictures and flying different kites!

Charlie and all,

Thank you for this excellent description of the Brutus outing. Sri there were storms on Friday night, but Saturday sounded perfect. I'm sri I couldn't make it this year. I listened, but no joy on hearing the club call. Hope all had a good time, made lots of contacts, heard the hoot owl that lives in Brutus, the coyotes that cruise the area, and ate plenty of Johnny's famous BBQ ribs. Hope to be there next year with a wahr and and a rig.
- 72 WA0ITP

"They have a beautiful camping area away from any major towns or cities ,
out in the country , with plenty of room to set up antennas and people
bring their own rigs and equipment , plus antennas and mounts . There is a
huge clear area immediately adjacent to the camping area , where we can
stretch out most any antenna that you can imagine.

Many people camp on site and eat , play , and talk radio during the entire
event and one gets the chance to see equipment that they might have not
seen yet , as well as home brew equipment that the guys bring along . Many
bring their XYL's with them and a wonderful bar b que rib lunch , with
plenty of sides to go with it has become a part of the Saturday activities.

Many times people also set up their extra equipment and items on their
tail gates and a good deal of buy - selling- trading- and even some "please
take it home items" that guys don't want to haul back home with them.

Fun for the entire family in a beautiful setting."

Send in your score!

John Lonigro

Well, I'm back from a long and busy weekend, and I'm not talking about Big Brutus. I hope lots of folks were able to participate in the September Second Sunday Sprint. I suspect those who participated in Big Brutus were absent last night, but that opened up the possibility for others to jump in. I haven't checked qrpcontest.com yet. I'll do so Wednesday morning, to announce the winner for this month. After September, there are three more chances to increase your score before I announce the overall winners for the period Nov, 2015 through Dec, 2016. Starting in 2017, the SSS contest period will be 1 year in duration (Jan-Dec).

Remember, even if you scanned the bands but were unable to make any contacts, please report your 0 QSOs, as long as you listened for at least 15 minutes.

John, AA0VE

One more time (Final SSS Reminder)

Jeff Logullo N0̸MII

I know that John AA0VE said that his email was the "final reminder" -- and that's true. That was HIS final reminder. I'm sure he would not mind that another _FINAL_ reminder went out.. .so here it is :-)

Jeff N0MII

---------------

This is your final reminder that the September Second Sunday Sprint
(SSSS) will be held this coming Sunday, from 7:00-9:00 CDT (0000-0200
UTC Monday). As always, complete rules, suggested frequencies, and
logging website are all at www.qrpcontest.com/4sqrp.

It's your final reminder because I'll be involved in several different
activities starting tomorrow and will likely forget (or not have time)
to send any further reminders. Also, I'll be dragging Monday morning,
so try to remember to log your results as soon as possible after the
contest. I'll try to get my act together by Wednesday morning to report
the results and generate the September winner certificate. And, as with
last month, if you listen for at least 15 minutes during the contest,
please submit your entry, even if your total is 0 QSO points. I'm still
trying to see how many people participate each month.

Remember, although we are keeping track of cumulative scores for the
overall 2916 winner, each month, the person with the most QSO points for
that month gets a certificate and recognition for his fine performance.

John, AA0VE

Phil , I have logged in the thousands of both JT65 and JT9 contacts on HF .

I also run Dimension 4 software and highly recommend using it , to provide accurate timing and time keeping. I have run it on Windows XP , 7 , and now on 10. I run WSJT-X software and just recently added WSJT-X / JTAlert-X to go with it.

If I can be of any help please let me know. I also use the SignaLink USB interface at both of my stations. One is on a Kenwood and the other is a Yaesu . I just received a new Yaesu FT-991 from UPS literally just minutes before I left for Big Brutus on Friday afternoon. So I will this weekend and into this week be rearranging the shack and main operating position to set up the FT-991 , as well as a new Ameritron 811H amplifier , that I bought more than a year ago , but have never even taken it out of the plastic yet.

I will be waiting on a set of cables , that I already have on order , from SignaLink , for use with the data port on the 991. So as soon as they arrive , I will be getting it set up to run the digital modes .

My Kenwood TS2000 has to go to the shop and IF the 991 works out well , it will become the main 100 watt class rig and the TS2000 will become the backup.

Time will tell which goes where. I originally ordered the FT-991 to be a backup for the TS-2000.

I have the receiving section working and debugging the TX portion now. Very interesting stuff.

I noticed that on the program’s display (operators screen) the TIME seems to be running ok and staying in sync with UTC.
So receive and decoding seems to be working.

However the data on the screen is showing Sept 10 instead of 9? What’s the deal?

And, can’t seem to find a forum for chatting about stuff like this.

I can’t operate on 40 meters, but I am planning to go to the Scottsbluff National Monument again to operate NPOTA on 20 meters.  Should be about an hour from now, maybe just before 2100 UTC.  Look at 14049 or near there.
