I'm very sri to see that Dave will be giving up the Webmaster duties, he has been a major, and unsung, force for us.  Many many thanks to him for his tireless efforts in developing the 4sqrp.com and www.ozarkcon.com web sites.  As one who has worked closely with him, I know that he donated countless hours working behind the scenes creating large amounts of code for us, a true labor of love for the club.  For these efforts he was honored as the recipient of the 2012(?) QRPer of the Year Award.

That code gave us our web presence, including our Home Page with all those second level pages and links, and the  OzarkCon site with the Registration page and the many supporting pages.  There are many OzarkCon maintenance pages which were created so that various aspects of the conference could be managed by those responsible, a great piece of work.

The next time you are on any of the club pages, right click and View Page Source to see just a small part of Dave's code.  Without his strong work, we couldn't have become successful.

The websites are mature and should only need periodic maintenance and minor updates.  If any of you reading this would like to try your hand at maintaining the web sites, I'm sure any  board member would be happy to receive a note from you.

Thank  you Dave.

MODERATOR NOTE: Is the call for real? Have we been hacked?

Tim N9PUZ

A note from the moderators...

Please do not automatically assume that the site has been hacked because someone spotted a bogus call sign.

Yes, it is possible. More likely is that sometime in the process of adding a call sign to the list either Gary or I accidentally (and without malice!) managed to fat finger a bogus call sign in to the list. We're human and a lot of the time our 4SQRP list maintenance duties come at the end of an eight or ten hour work day.

We moderators have just enough access to update the list of call signs. The interface to do so is not perfect but it is functional. We do have the ability to delete a call sign if needed and after checking around I have deleted the call sign '14AB0HP' which indeed does not appear to be legit. We have NO access to make any other sort of change to the web site itself.

Adding a call sign serves only to associate a 4SQRP "number" with the call. In the big scheme of things that means if a bogus call sign is entered we may have "wasted" one of the numbers. We have plenty of numbers and no small children will die as a result.

As for implementing all sorts of industry standard security, etc. for order processing, etc. it really doesn't apply here. The order processing part which handles the finances is all done by PayPal, a third party company. I'm sure it is not impossible for PayPal to be compromised either. However, they handle many millions of dollars worth of transactions each year and in my humble opinion there is no way that a hand full of volunteer IT folk from 4SQRP could do better in our spare time.

Tim N9PUZ

Whoever takes this over needs to know what they are doing.  The New England QRP site was hacked last Summer, and I had to cancel my Nescaf kit order because of it.

The days of throwing up static HTML on a server, where the operating system and supporting web server software are ignored and vulnerabilities go unpatched are looooooong gone.

If you wish to continue to take orders for kits, some level of PCI (Payment Card Industry) Compliance security and separation may need to be implemented and maintained, SHA 2 256 bit certificates may need to be purchased and applied to the web server, and other non-trivial tasks may need to be done.

This looks to be more than a one person task.

SSS is Sunday

John Lonigro

Don't forget. The Second Sunday Sprint (SSS) is tomorrow (Sunday) from 7:00-9:00 pm Central standard time. Go to QRPContest.com for details.

This is the last sprint of the Nov, 2015-Dec, 2016 contest period. Let's make it a well=attended one.

72 and good luck in the contest,

John AA0VE

Last evening's 40m net and SSS coming up

John Lonigro

I heard Chas and I think Wayne last night, but both were deep in the mud.  Then my furnace burners kicked in and that was the end of it.  The little motor (with brushes) that circulates combustion air is a noisy son of a gun.  All radio activity ceases when it turns on.  The main blower motor doesn't seem to be a problem - must be an induction motor.

Hope propagation is better for Sunday evening, which is the December Second Sunday Sprint.  This is your last chance to add QSO points to your running total for the 14 month period.  And, despite the fact that the cumulative scores indicate a runaway, your chances of snagging the winning number of points for December is the same as everyone else's.  The more people we have trying, the more likely it will be that there's a decent communication path between two stations.  Your station could be one of the lucky ones.

72 and good luck in the contest,

John, AA0VE

W2SH - Chas - NJ - 1117 Mi
W4EAB - Allan - NC - 854 Mi
That said, I am in wholehearted agreement with Chas, 80m is currently a lot friendlier currently.
I turned to Paul (N0NBD) at 20:00 local and heard a good signal to begin with but it faded to zilch so I missed my opportunity to snag him on 80.
Yep, I traded antennas at 19:45 local from the G5RV jr to the 124'6" wahr which is the antenna that snagged me NC so the antenna works.
Steve, it was good to hear you on 40 again, nice. Chas, always a pleasure and the signal was a good'un, Allan, welcome to the net.

4SQRP Wednesday Evening 80m Gathering

w2sh@...

I didn't think there was a 80m net, so mebbe just a friendly "gathering".

Leaving 40m, I switched over to 80m.  Paul, WA9PWP was there on 3.564 mHz with his customary robust sig. We worked (comfortably for me at least) with me getting his 449 and I giving him a 559.

OK.   I heard WAØITP calling for a possible roll call (?).  He worked ACØBQ for a brief QSO as I stood by.  I then listened while ACØBQ engaged WA9PWP for a brief exchange.  By then Johnny's sig was 569 and Paul's was a rock-solid 579.  WAØITP was still there with a workable sig, but I didn't want to turn this evening's gathering into a raucous free-for-all by calling and possibly working him.

So after a moment's silent grace I called and worked Johnny.  And I seized the opportunity to thank him for our solid five-Watt QRP exchange on Tuesday, 22 November (the Tuesday before Thanksgiving) on 160m, over a 1,150-mile path!  Hear ye, y'all 4SQRPers!

Elsewhere I've pronounced 80m to be much more user-friendly than 40m, so far this season.

So keep the faith in 3.564.

72,

Charles (aka Chas), W2SH

Re: Wednesday evening 40m net

w2sh@...

Hello there,

My presence on 40m tonight was brief.  I was a couple of minutes late turning on the rig and tuning up my huge 2 kW  Pi-circuit antenna tuner . There was a healthy 569 sig finishing up his QNI with Wayne but he never sent his callsign during his final two transmissions.  So, who was dat?

Thereafter Wayne gave me a 339 and he was a 559 here.  And  as I've often said, please remember that I have 70 minutes more evening darkness (and daylight in the mornings) than you fellows, so things are always better or worse for me than fer y'all.

Faithfully 72,

Charles (aka Chas), W2SH

QRP -  EFFICIENCY AND SKILL, NOT POWER.

I'm British by birth but American by CHOICE!

Jesus came to pay a debt He didn't owe because we owe a debt we cannot pay...

The Lord bless you and keep you
The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you
The Lord lift up his contenance upon you and give you peace.

God Bless from Wayne Dillon - NQ0RP
