Re: [BayouJumper] Spotting problem

Also, Front Panel on or off does have a considerable effect on the tuning frequency of the receiver.

I have worked on mine to the point I can spot my crystal frequency with acceptable accuracy, but only with the front panel removed.

Spotting with the front panel in place moves the receive frequency up about 10KHz (by spotting) according to testing using another radio as the signal source after spotting.

I am using another radio as a signal source to determine where the receive frequency is after spotting for both conditions of Front Panel Mounting.

I thought about the possibility of the front panel being mounted causing some unusual coupling back into the audio amplifier.  The collector of Q3 has a fairly large capacitor, C24, to decouple any RF there.

I tried putting a 220pF cap in the feedback loop of U1 (pins 4 to 5) and that didn't help.

Anybody got any ideas ??

I am baffled as to why the front panel being mounted would cause the Rx Spotting frequency to be high by 10KHZ !!! ???

First thing I did was change R17, in the Tx circuit, from 1K to 6.8K in an attempt to lower the output of the spotting signal, assuming the R17 & D1  were still allowing Q4 to contribute to the spotting signal.

That seemed to help me since my Bayou Jumper was all over the dial (end to end) when trying to 'Spot'.

While turning the tuning control in the 'Spot' mode, my tuning control sounds very 'scratchy', but not while in normal receive mode.

I noticed on the receiver schematic the audio output from Q3 was going through a C9 to the wiper on the volume control.  My personal preference is NOT to do it that way.  So I changed that circuit so C9 feeds the high side of the volume control and the wiper feeds C13 going to the IC audio amp.

Now with Regen at minimum, Atten at maximum and Volume at a comfortable level (just barely turned up), I can spot the signal (somewhat), but the tuning control still sounds scratchy.

I say I am spotting the signal, let me explain...
I am using my FT-817 to to determine what is what.
With the Bayou Jumper key down for spotting, I can "spot" the signal on the Bayou Jumper, and the FT-817 says the transmit frequency is approx 7.29MHz (using the 7030 crystal).

Releasing the Bayou Jumper key, I then tune the FT-817 to see where the regen oscillator is.  No matter what I do the Regen oscillator always comes out about 20KHz higher than the Crystal frequency.
I would expect the regen freq to not be dead on the crystal frequency, but not off by 20KHz.

What am I missing here ??

The nice solid, twin heterodynes on either side of my signal HAD DISAPPEARED and I could not get them back! :(

I am getting close to resigning myself to marking the dial according to where another Xmtr shows my 7.030 frequency to be on the BJ-1.

I've marked the points on the dial with dots of yellow paint, but re-setting to a value seems to be problematic.

Success will depend on somebody answering my CQ and being willing to be a tad off. I have had people take me to task when using my KN-Q7A SSB rig, which has a VXO, and not being able to exactly come on frequency. They don't seem to know about using an RIT....

Jim, N5IB

Managed to work KV6Z with QSB, and heard N0NBD but only a few other faint signals. Propagation wasn't nearly as good as the night or two before, and I turned in before the last 30 minutes.

Yep, we have to remember tune a bit after calling CQ, and to call 3x3 when answering one to give folks time to tune some. At least the Rx bandwidth is WIDE  :^))

If you haven't done so already, please send in your score, certainly by tomorrow night. I'll be reporting the results Wednesday morning.

If you wish to report a score of "0", just to show you were trying, be my guest, but I believe participation is good enough to continue the SSS for another year. I may ask you to report zero scores later in the year, if the participation is in question. I'd sure like to see 15-20 people (or more) sending in scores each month.

I had the radio on for about 30 minutes before the phone rang last night. I heard Paul N0NBD around 7.122, but I didn't get his complete callsign and his signal was way in the noise. That's about all I heard. I don't have an 80M antenna and am unable to comment on that band's condition.

I checked down to 7121 several times. I will remember to slow down for Jumpers tuning

Well, I hung out for about 45 minutes calling CQ on 7.121.025ish...freq seems to vary by a few hertz but the Reverse Beacons spotted me at 7.121.100...
Anyway, I did have a couple of answers but dialing them in on the regen is horse of a different color.  So I use my IC-760 with fldigi to spot the sigs but they were just too weak to copy...even with all the filters fldigi couldn't pull them out...but I could tell they were there...
SO, I will have to remember to give a long enough reply or call to allow other BJ'ers the time needed to dial in my signal...hopefully they will return the favor.

Hello John,

I was disappointed, I thought I would work a BUNCH of Jumpers but no soap. I will haunt 7122 this week to try to work a few. Gear here was KX2 and Doublet 5 watts.

I almost heard you here in Kirkwood, MO.  At least I heard "N0N__" and figured it was you.  But you were in the mud and then you disappeared.  Then I got on the phone with my kids and just got off around 9:15.  I listened around 7.122 for about 30 minutes with my bandwidth set high, plus I scanned back and forth about 10 kHz, in case I heard a Bayou Jumper.  Unless you were using one, I didn't hear any.

Here's the low pass filter I am looking to build.
It's built in an Altoids can so it must be official QRP equipment !

Great fun.  I use an Icom 756 Pro III, LSB, and 1.8k filter setting.  It takes me about a half hour to scan the band, tuning slow and stopping often, i.e. listening deep. Some signals are right at the noise level.  I'm thinking that a low pass filter in front of the receiver to knock down the broadcast band would be useful. I'm getting some mixing products and overloading due to a BCB station about 2 miles away.

I recounted the beacons, I had copied and I it was approaching 40 .......I only had 38 ......
You want to tune slowly , because the CW is so slow that there is a pretty good gap before the beacon starts over .
If you do PSK you can look for the signals on the waterfall as you sweep the band .

Here is a list of North American beacons

http://dxinfocentre.com/ndb. htm

Just use the search function in your web browser to find the Call Sign you
think you heard.

The noise is pretty bad .
I learned a little abut digging slow CW out of the noise.
I think I was approaching 50 beacons.

My QTH is close to Wichita, Ks so most beacons are I hear are
...........whadda you know , in the 4SQRP area.
Oklahoma, Kansas , Iowa, Texas, Missouri
The modulation or tone is kinda weird on many of them . You have to tune
carefully and play with all
your filters. I am using a Kenwood 590SG and a 130 ft OFC for a antenna.
