Yes, but that is easy to add a ground to the Key and keep it isolated from the front panel.

It is the Key, Phone and Power jacks that will be difficult to isolate from the front panel.

My tests indicate I am now tolerably close to the crystal's frequency.  At least close enough I would button this thing up and call it done, IF, I can find ways to isolate everything I mentioned above and leave the Front Panel electrically floating !!

Once everything is put back together with the F.P. isolated, I will want to double check the Regen Setup, but for right now, it seems like the tuning is less 'touchy', and I am getting a pretty full span of frequencies.  I say that because I can spot both of the supplied crystals (7030 & 7122).

It is getting late here so I think I will sleep on it and see what I come up with tomorrow to isolate everything, and of course retest everything tomorrow to make certain what I think I have here...

slightly off topic

Charles W. Powell

I want to announce this opportunity to the 4sQRP group, just in case.  I have posted the same in several other forums.  I do wish that I would have been able to post this earlier, since the time until the first event in short, but better late than never.

There are two upcoming Scouting Events that will be held near Arusha, Tanzania.  The first is the Africa Scout Days, from 8 March 2017 through 12 March 2017.  The second is the Centenary Jamboree, celebrating 100 years of scouting in Tanzania, from 28 June 2017 through 7 July 2017.

The organizer, Hidan Rico - 5H3HO, has the ambitious desire to put an HF operation on the air with five transceivers for the 80-10 meters and multimode operation.  Unfortunately, I think they only have ONE transceiver at this time, and uncertain plans with regard to antennas, etc.  They also hope to have an Echolink setup.  The desire is to have CAT control of the rig(s) and centralized computer logging.  They will have a generator onsite for power.  I am not sure about Internet connectivity at the site but if it exists, it will be through a mobile provider (3G) connection.

SO… If you’ve had a burning desire to go to Africa, you are involved in Scouting, or you’d like to take on a challenging field setup for radio ops, (any or all of the above) THIS IS A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY!  Unless you have a sponsor here in the US, this trip would be entirely self-funded.  If you do go, I recommend you plan on a safari as part of your trip.  There are several beautiful and fascinating game parks in the vicinity, including Arusha National Park, Serengeti National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater National Park. There are, of course, other large game parks and reserves in Tanzania that would be an option.  I can recommend a Tanzanian travel agent if you wish to make arrangements.

Travel requirements are minimal.  You need a valid passport that expires MORE THAN 6 MONTHS after your arrival, and you need a visa costing $100 (USD) that can be obtained on arrival.  If you do not travel through any countries where Yellow Fever is endemic, you do not need proof of YF vaccine.  By they way, if you have EVER had YF vaccine and still have proof of this, it is now valid for life in most places. Tanzania subscribes to this new recommendation. If you want to operate your own station in Tanzania, it is an additional $100 to obtain the license. (There are no repeaters operational there, of which I am aware.) I can provide general information for anyone who is interested.

Unfortunately, I am unable to go for the initial event, but I am considering at least helping with setup for the latter event in conjunction with other work I do in Tanzania. Again, I am able to give general information, but for specifics you will need to make contact with Hidan 5H3HO.  His e-mail is <z5h3arc@...>. I can tell you from my trips to Tanzania, it is a wonderful place and quite the life experience.

I hope we can find a few folks who can participate.  I am not currently involved in scouting, but I have worked with Hidan Rico through the TARC - Tanzanian Amateur Radio Club - regarding licensing, and I have taught a Morse class in Dar Es Salaam.

73,

Charles - 5H3DX - NK8O - VE3ISD

Re: [BayouJumper] Spotting problem

Also, Front Panel on or off does have a considerable effect on the tuning frequency of the receiver.

I have worked on mine to the point I can spot my crystal frequency with acceptable accuracy, but only with the front panel removed.

Spotting with the front panel in place moves the receive frequency up about 10KHz (by spotting) according to testing using another radio as the signal source after spotting.

I am using another radio as a signal source to determine where the receive frequency is after spotting for both conditions of Front Panel Mounting.

I thought about the possibility of the front panel being mounted causing some unusual coupling back into the audio amplifier.  The collector of Q3 has a fairly large capacitor, C24, to decouple any RF there.

I tried putting a 220pF cap in the feedback loop of U1 (pins 4 to 5) and that didn't help.

Anybody got any ideas ??

I am baffled as to why the front panel being mounted would cause the Rx Spotting frequency to be high by 10KHZ !!! ???

I have been experimenting with mine today.

First thing I did was change R17, in the Tx circuit, from 1K to 6.8K in an attempt to lower the output of the spotting signal, assuming the R17 & D1  were still allowing Q4 to contribute to the spotting signal.

That seemed to help me since my Bayou Jumper was all over the dial (end to end) when trying to 'Spot'.

While turning the tuning control in the 'Spot' mode, my tuning control sounds very 'scratchy', but not while in normal receive mode.

I noticed on the receiver schematic the audio output from Q3 was going through a C9 to the wiper on the volume control.  My personal preference is NOT to do it that way.  So I changed that circuit so C9 feeds the high side of the volume control and the wiper feeds C13 going to the IC audio amp.

Now with Regen at minimum, Atten at maximum and Volume at a comfortable level (just barely turned up), I can spot the signal (somewhat), but the tuning control still sounds scratchy.

I say I am spotting the signal, let me explain...
I am using my FT-817 to to determine what is what.
With the Bayou Jumper key down for spotting, I can "spot" the signal on the Bayou Jumper, and the FT-817 says the transmit frequency is approx 7.29MHz (using the 7030 crystal).

Releasing the Bayou Jumper key, I then tune the FT-817 to see where the regen oscillator is.  No matter what I do the Regen oscillator always comes out about 20KHz higher than the Crystal frequency.
I would expect the regen freq to not be dead on the crystal frequency, but not off by 20KHz.

What am I missing here ??

I'm having the same problem here. It seemed that I initially had the two heterodynes as described-- without doing any regen.  trimmer- cap c30 or tuner- coil winding adjustments-- but then-- for some unknown reason, after putting the front panel on, I lost this SPOTTING capability and could only tune in my own signal ( in receive position) listening to "tuning little beeps" to settle in on the Xtal frequency. The nice solid, twin heterodynes on either side of my signal HAD DISAPPEARED and I could not get them back! :(

I am getting close to resigning myself to marking the dial according to where another Xmtr shows my 7.030 frequency to be on the BJ-1.

Any further suggestions from anybody will be appreciated. I like things to work the way they should-- my downfall!

Even with full attenuation and regeneration cut entirely down, it is still difficult to spot you crystals. I have ended up -- not at all convenient -- hooking up my Yaesu VR-500 "DC to Daylight" radio and setting it to my crystal frequency, then setting regeneration up and adjusting the dial to hit the setting of the radio. I've marked the points on the dial with dots of yellow paint, but re-setting to a value seems to be problematic.

Any suggestions?

Success will depend on somebody answering my CQ and being willing to be a tad off. I have had people take me to task when using my KN-Q7A SSB rig, which has a VXO, and not being able to exactly come on frequency. They don't seem to know about using an RIT....

Good afternoon Everett,
Please don't let your code speed spoil your enjoyment on the nets/SSS. Part of our reason to be is to encourage operation and if that means slowing down to your speed, well that's what well do. It's all about improving, no matter how slowly, we'll work with you - always. so please do join in the Wednesday evening nets and the monthly SSS. We appreciate you.
be blessed and don't forget to listen out, call in at whatever speed you are comfortable with.
Hope to copy you soon

I stuck it out for an hour and made one contact. I heard a few other signals but not strong enough to work. Ill be hanging in the 7122 area for Jumpers tomorrow. de Paul N0NBD

Re: [BayouJumper] Spotting problem

Is there a way to tame down the spotting issue?
