I just got back from Branson and wanted to tell the group how much I enjoyed the speakers on Saturday. This was my first but hope to see many more. Thanks to all who put it together. I'm just learning CW and really enjoy it. Hope to work some of you in the future. 73

Just got home from 10th annual Ocon(the birthday cake) was very good as was the rest of the food at the banquet! I'm sure there will be many reports of the 2013 version of Ocon. I just wonder how something like Ocon could just get better and better. Every aspect that I can think of certainly was as good or improved upon from previous Ocons. Sorry to say that I wasn't able to partake in the build session but I know everyone was saying is was packed full and everyone seemed to have a smile on their face when talking about. Now Ben, thanks for the clarification about the "the-ne-ke" paddles. I knew I got mine from Dennis or from folks that got them from Dennis so I was totally confused. I managed to get Dennis's call sign at Ocon and hope to get in contact with him. (Sorry about the dangled, fractured english ) I didn't think I would care about the DXpedition but Jay's presentation was very interesting. For a self-described - behind the scenes guy - he did a great job behind the mike as well. The glimpse into the world of movie making would have been fascinating - even without the morse tie in... My own attempt at a mag-loop is gathering dust in the shop - now I need to get it out, fix it up, and see if it can do as well as our presenter indicated :-) The more technical presentations may have bit a bit over my head (not hard) but hopefully I learned a little something. Learned at least how little I know about transceiver design. I was concerned for a while that we might be in for a QRP transceiver without a computer chip - but in the end he did save that... (old computer geek - gotta have those chips ) Picked up some bits and pieces in the market area. I was tempted but held out on the BuddiPole. It really was tempting but having just built one for myself I couldn't justify it. Enjoyed the Elecraft display. I thought I was happy with my K1 & KX1 - but now I may need a KX-3 :-( My one regret is that I didn't meet anyone from the Springfield area. I'm sure you were there. Saw a couple in the registration list but these old eyes can't read the name tags fast enough to pick them out of the crowd. Karen & arrived in Branson, Friday around 6PM from Tulsa, and got our registration packets and then dashed off to our motel and got a quick bite to eat and made it back for the 7PM kit build. Karen did a great job on the digital interface and I had a blast helping her. She was very proud of her handi-work.
We made a quick run by the vendor room as it was closing up then headed to Sonic for a milk shake and then back to the motel. On our way, our son in Ft Worth (W5DTM) called and said they were on their way to the maternity ward in Fort Worth. We knew this was an outside possibility - but the Daughter-in-law was running 5 weeks early. By 4AM Saturday, we knew that they were not going to stop the delivery and we'd have a new grand baby sometime on Saturday. We slept in until 8AM and then got ready to head to Ft Worth. They took the baby via c-section at 9:08 AM Saturday and new harmonic Lainey Elousie was brought into the world. That was the sweet part of the weekend. The bitter part was we missed all the seminars and fellowship that we had looked forward too for weeks. (Not sure if that great deal for two nights motel stay via Groupon will work out so well now either...) So - I look forward to all the reviews and musings from everyone that attended. Do you think noise might be getting in and screwing up the keyer chip? Something peculiar to your environment or DC source, maybe? The Vcc bypass cap, C23, is about as close as it could be to the chip, but I wonder what adding, say, 1uF *and* a .01uF caps across C23 to provide a range of low-impedance paths for a wider range of noise frequencies? I also wonder if you could have a bad D7? Or for that matter anything else in the power chain. If your PR is naked, I wonder what an enclosure might do?
Sorry if these ideas have already been mentioned.

I'm glad to read all had a good time at this year's Ozarkcon. Unfortunately I couldn't attend because of health reasons. I'm unable to travel except for a short day trip. I sure would like to see any photos that were taken, especially photos of the homebrew contest entries and winners.

Hi All,
Lots of fun and I really enjoyed being the vendor rep for Elecraft on this one. When they weren't in the seminars, the table was often swamped with guys (and some wives too) interested in the K3 and especially the KX3 after I got it hooked up to one of the vertical antennas from Loops & More that I had bought prior to the conference. The first 100' of coax had a shorted connector. The K3 and KX3's tuners loaded it like a dummy load, gave a 1:1 match but nobody could hear things. Once I replaced it with the spare cable I brought, everything went well and the demonstrations were much more meaningful.
Left Branson about 8:30 and made it back to Park City safely about 1:30 and got unloaded shortly thereafter. Now I gotta take the wife grocery shopping if I want supper hi hi. Really great seeing people I hadn't seen for a few years and it was especially nice for the chance to meet Peter, G3JRH. Very much looking forward to next year.

Hi folks , the name is Ben and the call is K8AR. I just joined the group and was looking through the April posts when I came across the posting from W0IIT about the te-ne-ke. I thought maybe I could expand on it because every Wednesday I have breakfast with the inventor of that key. That is Boyd Mason,NE8KE who invented it in 1994. In 1995 he showed Dennis Foster how to make them and Dennis then made a smaller version called the micro. So that is the history behind it . Subsequently he turned the whole project over to our club , the North Ottawa Amateur Radio Club. Our club page is at W8CSO.org , upper right go to te-ne-ke and that will bring you all the particulars of what is available today. I am anxiously waiting to read the reports about Ozarkcon and the buildathon there. So far it sounds like a bunch of enthused participants. Ben k8ar

I spoke too soon. It worked fine for about 5 minutes then the keyer went whacky again. Now I'm getting weird sounds when I key down. If I hit the switch the sidetone sounds fine, but as soon as I start to send, there's a very loud hum as I key it. I tried different keys thinking it might be a plug or something, but I'm back to thinking that it's the keyer IC.

Well, the keyer chip has mysteriously rebooted itself and is now working. Don't ask me what happened. I took the rig to the shop and checked everything. I found that the stock switch was indeed intermittent so I installed a mini toggle switch for now until I can locate a momentary switch like the one that came with the kit. While I was at it, I installed a power indicator led light which will be helpful when I operate via battery. I also discovered in the process that one of my APP connectors in a 3 way dongle that I built is not good, which explains the sudden and nerve wracking loss of power which at the time I took as a very bad sign. Anyhoo, all is well and the radio is happily chirping along. Now all I have to do is get someone to answer my call and confirm my calling freq and all will be well in the world. 72 Steve W1SFR
