Wire Jpoles
That ARRL article came out just as I got my license and I had a new dual band HT. I built the antenna and it worked. Later when I borrowed an SWR meter I found that the antenna was way off, about 4:1 SWR. I now make wire jpoles with a piece of 450 ohm ladder line about 19" long and a half wave single wire attached to one side of the ladder line. It does work well on both bands as checked by an antenna analyzer. I can post dimensions if anyone is interested.

The issue is not that of "broad," being almost a 3rd harmonic of 2 meters. This generally applies to any antenna. Look at the geometry of the standing waves.

I've built 6m & 2m J-poles, and used the Arrow. The Arrow is a whole lot easier, less time and fuss, to set up and use. About as plug and play as can be.

I've spent many hours building 2 & 6 m J poles, that's a fun way to spend a few days, setting up a 2 in dia 6 m J-pole. The 2 m is a little easier, mostly because the size. I used 3/4 in copper tubing, and plexiglass. Works well.. but it took a couple days fiddling around to gather all the parts, pieces, fit and tuning. The Arrow took 15 minutes to be on the air.

  They both talked the same.

  Your choice.

Re: LNR Precision MTR-B

Colin Evans

The MTR5B doesn't come with a rotary encoder. There is very little space inside the case, I think it would be a struggle to squeeze in a rotary encoder.

EBay is flooded with encoders - the bog standard variety is fine - the type sold for Arduino experiments. There's a difference in the resolution - number of pulses per one rotation - all will work. I think I used an encoder with 20 ppr (pulses per rotation) for an MTR that I built.

To be honest, whilst the rotary encoder on the MTR-5B worked fine, I felt it added little to the operating experience. Using the up/down buttons, with fast and slow tuning rates, works great! My own MTR5B was built without the encoder, I don't miss it and I value the smaller case and lower weight.

My MTR5B was built from the kit - so case is home brewed. Will try to attach a picture of a rig with encoder.

Anybody here have one and if so, do you have the optional rotary encoder? Does it come along with the radio or if not where can it be obtained?

Good morning all,
It's funny you should mention that Charles but as the evenings have progressed I was thinking the same thing, net returning to 40m @ 19:30 (00:30)z and maybe one on 80 at 20:00 (01:00z). I'll try and get on 40 (the usual, 7.122) around that time this evening and Saturday evening to see how the band is responding. I'll drop an e-mail to the group as well as a shout on QRPSpots to say I'm there and if anyone is around the radio maybe they could give a listen out and if they hear me give me a shout.

I listened throughout their QSO interchange and both signals were getting better--Wayne now a skimpy 559 and Bill solidly 559.

Wayne was very generous with his next several CQs and I tried to QNI after each, dropping my callsign three times.  No luck, but then I heard Bill announce my presence.  I immediately called him giving his RST and Wayne's.  However, I never got an acknowledgement from Bill.  And then the freq went silent.

I have the advantage of 70 minutes more darkness than you fellows.  With the increasing amount of daylight for the next 11 weeks, mebbe having the Wednesday evening net on 40m might be considered.
