Cricket heard in Utah, John Wayne, and Award.!
WA0ITP
Woo Hoo!! Great range for
Crickets. Some of the
build session Crickets were reported to be making 1.1W, so they may
stretch out even further. These are the John Waynes of
the Cricket population :o) If you have a John Wayne Cricket, you are lucky - but check the temp of Q2 often.

It's a simple but effective transceiver that was used as the build session kit at OzarkCon. It's vy nearly ready to release, just waiting on some parts. 72 WAØITP I love this radio stuff. www.wa0itp.com www.4sqrp.com On 4/9/2017 8:10 PM, Marty Lifgren

I saw the suggestion to load Linux and would second. There are also a number of distros focused on amateur radio and if you go that route would suggest the Linux in the Ham Shack podcast.

With Linux there is Gimp, a Photoshop replacement. Very powerful software and completely free of charge. For sound/audio, try Audacity.

Cricket heard in Utah !
dekle@...
I didn't get any takers with my CQ effort this morning, but 3 minutes before I quit, and just as the grey line was passing over my house, an RBN Spot popped up from NC7J in Layton, Utah.
NC7J is 933 miles away and reported a 3 dB SNR. I think that means that my Cricket was twice as strong as the noise. I see Cricketeer in my future. Oh yeah. Bill KV6Z

Another concern is Microsoft stopped supporting XP quite a while ago. Any security issues found after support stopped will not be fixed. I'm keeping one Win XP computer for an old HP scanner I've got (that HP decided not to write Win10 drivers for), but I've got the internet turned off for that machine. Upgrading the old CPU to Windows 10 turns out to cost only a little less than buying a cheap new Windows 10 computer. Another option, as mentioned by several people, is to switch to Linux. I current run "wine" on my Linux computer and am able to run many Windows programs from it, even the ExpressPCB software mentioned at Ozarkcon. 72, John, AA0VE

I've been very satisfied with Salix:
https://www.salixos.org/ I have it running on my Lenovo T410 and it works very well. I even installed it on an aging IBM T41 I have and though I did have to select a different kernel, it installed and ran just fine on that quite old hardware. 72, Nate -- "The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. Re: Hidden Oscillator - FOUND !!!
Nick-WA5BDU
It was fun and a bit surprising to find the hidden TX.
I was going to borrow a small directional loop from N5IB but couldn’t find
him in time, so I went to my room and turned on the KX3 with its dummy load
antenna which consisted of a 51 ohm resistor in series with a loop of wire about
4’ in diameter.
When I turned on the rig the signal was loud and clear, but wasn’t moving
the S-meter. I was on the 2nd floor maybe ten or so doors down from the lobby. I
wadded up the wire and ran up and down the aisles watching the S-meter. I found
that the signal was peaking up in the area near the ticket booth in the corner
of the lobby where we had picked up our packets. It was also loud in that
part of the flea market room across the wall and also in the lobby to the left
of the ticket booth. I also checked just outside.
I could see that it was strongest (S8 with the dummy load antenna) right in
that area left of the ticket booth. There was a suit of armor and a table with
black cloth covering it and a bell on top of it. I crawled under the table
and found a package of mini donuts frosted with powdered sugar. Was it in
there? No. I kept going to the suit of armor where the signal was
strong, but it had sharp edges and seemed a bit fragile for a frantic/clumsy
search so I assumed the transmitter wouldn’t be inside of it.
Finally I started looking UP. There was some wooden trim extending
down from the ceiling about a foot or so that defined the nook the table with
the bell sat in. The back side of that trim had a small edge or shelf about an
inch or two wide and sitting on it was a small white plastic case with two or
three feet of wire exiting the top. Got it!
Better to be lucky than good? Maybe.
