Re: Hyper-Cricket at 12 volts?

WA0ITP

GM Ken,  Yabut (always one of those isnt there).

W0EB just posted a coupla days ago that he found very little difference in output power from 9 to 12 increase.  Maybe Jim will chime in here.

The designer, NM0S, in a private email to me when I asked abt 12 volts, said that R6 would need to be changed to 150k or 220k. I was thinking abt the convenience of using a 3 cell LiPo, and having loong battery life.  Haven't done that yet.

Sure it could be redesigned for more power, VFO, more sensitivity, etc.  But then it would be a whole new rig and not a Cricket anymore.  Dave designed it as an inexpensive, minimalist, and fun entry level rig.

btw Ken, do you own a Cricket yet?  They're great fun.

Re: Hyper-Cricket at 12 volts?2

I wonder if its a problem in the biasing of Q2. I assume the current draw went up a lot at 12 V causing the heating. I suspect it was not just the slight increase in power. The problem I see may be not so much someone trying to get more power output when using 12 (or 14) V in place of the 9 V battery but just not wanting to use (or having handy) a good 9 V battery.

To be able to use 12 - 14 volts with the rig I would consider one of several methods. Changing the biasing (R6/R3) would perhaps work, but then if used at 9 V power out may be very low. One might try using a 9 volt regulator (7809) to power the whole rig from the higher voltage. Or one might try connecting R6 to regulated 9 V (zener circuit or real regulator) instead of the keyed 9 V line.

Re: Hyper-Cricket at 12 volts?2

Jim Sheldon

I tested that yesterday on mine.  The answer is everything in the RX works fine on 12 volts.  The transmitter is a different story.  The PA transistor, Q2, heats up very rapidly and I don't think it will last through a normal QSO.  The power output does not increase by enough to make any real difference so the overall answer is NO it ain't gonna work on 12 volts.  After sending CQ CQ CQ de W0EB W0EB W0EB K once using 12 volts, Q2 was so hot it would blister your finger if you weren't careful touching it.  Voltage per power out with a 2N7000 at Q2 - 9.5 volts, .75 watts, 10 volts .80 watts, 11 volts .89 watts and at 12 volts it was .9 to 1.0 watts out.  Swapped Q2 to a BS170 and got identical results (less than .02 watt difference) so there is really nothing to be gained by running the Cricket on 12 volts except de-soldering/soldering practice when replacing Q2 every time it failed.

Re: A simple PVC PIPE audio filter for the Cricket

Hello,

I made it's el-cheapo little brother ( some old issue of Popular Electronics )
out of a Pringles potato chip can and the speaker out of an old CB radio. That
sounded very good, so I can imagine that it's big brother from QST will be
much better.

By all means have a look at the February 2017 issue of QST, pages 43-45, "A
Resonant Speaker for CW", for good ideas and a nicely crafted result.

Lets build one!

A hunk of pvc pipe works very well, and is plenty stiff enough. I built one
some years back, and if I could find it, I'd use it. The volume of the pipe
doesn't matter, only the length, so I'll let the size of the junk box speaker
dictate the diameter of the pipe. Easy calculation too, length of
pipe=1100/2f. Think I'll build one specifically for the Cricket, but it will
need a little outboard amp (tape it to the filter) to drive the speaker. This
thing could be built similar to a trombone, so I may include a sliding insert
(or an outside tube) that changes the resonant freq from abt 800 cycles (8.5")
down to 400cycles (16.5"). It will work for any rig that will drive a
speaker.

I'm off to the junque box to find a speaker, anyone else want to build one
too? Anyone have some good construction hints?
