Re: Ozark Patrol help needed

Bill Cromwell

Hi Dan,

The volume on mine is rather low but if my shop is quiet I can hear it from twenty feet - if i pay attention. I plug in the "computer speaker" too but if I am going to be near the radio it is loud enough. Do you use your radio with headphones? The simoler radios are best with cans.

I think my voltages are closer to what the paper says but those are never dead on. I found a bad capacitor that goes with the "bandswitch" on mine. Did you measure the resistors? I have a lot harder time with the paint used in the color bands and so I use an ohm meter on every one of them. It was much clearer 60 years ago when the parts and the stripes were bigger and there weren't fifty different shades for each color and some colors overlapping others. A navy "blue" stripe .030" wide looks just like a "black" stripe - even under the magnifier.

You may discover an out of spec resistor or more likely a resistor in the wrong position. They didn't define "oops" for that one mistake I made once upon a time <evil grin>.

well. Is that normal? Also, I noticed that while the Q1 collector
voltage looks much better now, the Q3 collector voltage is still only
about 5.5 volts instead of the noted 8-9 volts. Just wondering if
anyone could provide any further assistance on that. Or perhaps the low
volume level and lower voltage is normal.

Last Hunt of the Summer Season 2017

Dale Putnam

The LAST hunt of the 2017 Summer Season, will happen the last day of Aug. (local time).

Are you ready? Will you be hunting in the 20 acre woods with the best Hounds in the Country?

They are good.  Can you put your hands on a pelt from either the WyLee western FOX, WC7S, or the

Sly yet Intrepid, Wi FOX, NK9G? They will be in the 20 acre woods, between 14.050 and 14.070

Aug 31, at 7pm MT or 0100z.

FOX will be calling "FOX u" or "FOX d" working split for beginning, about 1 khz or so, please spread out.

Place your call in a clear spot, (take a shot at the FOX) and grab a pelt, in a hurry, with the exchange being:

RST, State or Prov, name, power (and not more than 5 watts please.)  i.e.

the Western FOX will send:

"call RST WY LEE 5 bk"  Then you send "R rst State name pwr bk"

IF the Prop Princess is smiling on us, it goes very quick.

ONE NOTE: DO NOT let the speed of the FOX intimidate you, if you are happy with cw speed of slower than he is going, call anyway!!

They will slow down for you, no problem. Altho, it will be the same exchange, with only the rst changing maybe from the FOX.

The FOX have keen ears, but only two of them, and they got confused with everyone calling on top of one another.

And a confused FOX ear is simply not pretty.

IF you like the Summer Season, you'll love the Winter Season, in the 40 and 80 acre woods. We'll have to bribe the Game Warden,  to see

when, so keep an eye to the web page around the end of October.. or first of Nov. To not miss the start.

Check out the standings at www. qrpfoxhunt.org

and make a plan... to be there, to enjoy the fastest 90 minutes in radio, at the LAST hunt of the 2017 Summer Season.

Have a great day,

Re: Ozark Patrol help needed

Not familiar with Ozark Patrol (I might have to get one to play with) but here are my thoughts:
1.  The base bias on Q1 is a bit low but probably not a problem at this point. Does V(Q1b) vary with the REGEN control (R4)?

2.   I would check the voltage along the component chain leading to Q1 - i.e. junction of R1 and R2, R2 and L1a.

If Q1 was 'off' the voltage on Q1c would be a bit less than battery voltage. You are reading 0V so it, as Mike commented, sounds like you either have a short on Q1c or a lack of continuity somewhere along the string from the battery to Q1c.

So just keep looking at voltages and staring at the schematic. Something is amiss - probably a bad solder joint. Good luck!

Moving on to the voltages listed in the instructions this is what I measured:

Battery voltage - 9.35 volts

I will put the voltage listed in the instructions in parentheses at the end just for reference

Emitter Q1 - 0v (0v)

Base Q1 - .52v (.65v)

Collector Q1 - 0v (3-5v)

Base Q2 - .61v (.65v)

Collector Q2 - 3.41v (3v)

Emitter Q3 - 2.74v (2.5v)

Collector Q3 - 5.48v (8-9v)

Ok, so something is clearly wrong on collector of q1 and collector of q3 ... the others seem close to me.  Looking at the schematic, I measured the voltage before R1 (around 9v) and between R1 and R2 (around 4.5v), but then the voltage drops to 0.

I have looked at the basic stuff (correct components and diode orientation / cold solder / bridges - that's not to say I didn't miss something), but I was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions on where to focus my attention.

Thanks!

Hi Dan,

I would disconnect power and with an ohm meter measure resistance of Q1 collector to ground. If its real close to 0 ohms, I would suspect a short in C1. If not close to 0 ohms I would suspect a problem with L1. Either not soldered properly or wires bit connected to proper places.
