you can add Yvon NU6I, Escondido, CA and my long wire antenna's preferred direction is towards north.
Maybe we can try one of those days. I work exclusively HF QRP. I have been licensed since 1966 and my CW is OK in sending but for copying I need spaces between characters. If I loose one I am lost :). That's what's happening if you don't use it for decades. 73, Yvon NU6I

The SSS is a laid back contest, not a net. The rules are all spelled out on the 4SQRP website (4SQRP.com). Look under "4SQRP On Air Activities" to get a copy of the rules. You can find the current standings at qrpcontest.com/4sqrp. There are certificates for the highest score each month as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place certificates for those with the 3 highest cumulative scores for the year. The SSS info is up-to-date. I believe the Wednesday night net info is not. Keep reading the traffic on this reflector and I'm sure someone will chime in Wednesday afternoon with times and frequencies for the nets. You may not have any problem participating in the SSS from Seattle. Gary, KF7WNS, lives in Bandon, OR and is always near the top of the standings. John, WB6HVH is in Visalia, CA and also has an entry nearly every week. Ron, AG1P, sometimes shows up as well. He's in Oregon. 72 and hope to hear you in the contest this Sunday night (5:00-7:00 pm PST). Of course, with my antenna, I hope to hear anybody in the contest (hi). John, AA0VE

Re: Second Sunday Sprint
N6CES.r@...
Hi all, I enjoy reading all the posts. I've been a ham since 1954, but am new to qrp. Just obtained a Heathkit HW-7 (40/20/15), and will put up a 80/40 dipole teathered North & South. I'm located in Seattle, so contacts to 4SQRP guys will be a challenge. I haven't been on hf for about 15 years since I gave my gear to a club for some new kids, and it's been about 35 years since I've been ok n CW. So you might say I'm a 77 year old newbie. I think I'm going to buy a cricket for 80 in a few months also. Where can I find more info in SSS and other nets. Read about one talked about on Wed nights on 40 and 80. Thanks for any info. It works ok but do not expect to run long. Those units are made to supply higher amps for short bursts. They are not designed for long continuous use.

That being said. They do work in a pinch and it is fun trying new or different ways😊 Paul KG5NKW

I'm assuming you are referring to one of those Jump starters like those sold at Harbor Freight? They have a 15 Ah (approx) gel-cell inside, nothing fancy. Mine used to be in the car until the insulation on the short jumper cables cracked and fell off. I removed the defective jumper cables from the old one, and added a cable with Anderson Powerpoles on the end. It should easily last for most of Field Day with a 5 Watt QRP rig attached. My model includes a cigarette lighter socket, a built-in trickle charger, a trouble light, a heavy duty on-off switch, the ability to charge it from your car, and an expanded scale voltmeter. When they are on sale, they are hard to beat, other than being large and on the heavy side. it's old technology, but I believe gelcells are safer to handle than the newer Lithium batteries. If they are kept charged with the built-in charger, they seem to last a pretty long time. Mine is at least 12 years old. 72, John, AA0VE

Second Sunday Sprint
John Lonigro
I believe the automatic reminders for this event are working, but there's been some confusion about the time.
The SSS is always from 7:00-9:00 pm Central Time, whether CDT or CST, whichever is in effect on that date. UTC will be different depending on whether DST is in effect. More on that next month. To summarize, since standard time is currently in effect: This month's SSS is Sunday, Feb 11, from 7:00-9:00 pm CST, which is 0100-0300Z Monday (for all time zones). That's 8:00-10:00 pm EST and 5:00-7:00 pm PST. The goal is for everyone to be on the air during the same 2 hour time slice. 72, John, AA0VE 4SQRP Contest Coordinator

Favorite keys, paddles?

Re: Favorite Paddle, Key?
Martin <huyettmeh@...>
My favorite key is a straight key, a WWII Speed-X given to me by a WWII vet (SK) while I lived in Florida. It has a very nice feel but what makes it special is the gentleman who gave it to me! I guess my second favorite straight key would be a homebrew one I made a few years ago. It’s dimensions are patterned off the Speed-X but it’s feel is not as good. I do use it from time to time, but the Speed-X is the favorite for operating.
You can see my homebrew key at http://www.huyettm.net/k0bxb.html.
I have an MFJ paddle but really prefer the straight key so seldom use it.

Bought a NOS Chinese army straight key, but hated it. Have a Junkers DBGM and a Navy Flameproof. Like them both very much. For paddles, a Kent single lever, a Morse Express Bushwhacker single lever, and a Elecraft (Bencher) Hex Key. I like the Hex key and use it the most. The Kent is fine too, the Bushwhacker not as good for me.
Portable use, I have a Palm Portable Key (PPK) straight key and a N0SP SSP mini paddle, both of which I like. I mount them interchangeably to a piece of clear acrylic using 3M Dual Lock. The acrylic makes it easier to stabilize the key on my lap when portable, and the Dual Lock provides a fairly rigid mount to the acrylic - more so than Velcro would.
