Re: 40m Net

Dennis,

40 has been a fickle band for me and the net. I am only about 100 miles from Bill KV6Z and can seldom hear him on 40 altho we hit each other gangbusters on the later 80 meter net. Don't dis pare the bands will pick up and get better de Paul N0NBD

I have no clue what is going on, but I live in MO. And I could hear some folks tuning up about 10 minutes before the net and I heard a couple of signals for about 10 minutes after the net started but nothing else. Like it dropped off the earth. This has happened before. I listened on 2 different radios and 2 different antennas..  any suggestions?

I will probably be there by Wednesday or Thursday at the latest to get in a little camping and quiet time. Last year no one showed up until Saturday, but in years past I’m told others have come earlier as well.

SW Series transceiver repair

Bill VanKirk

I received a Small Wonder Labs SW series transceiver in a trade recently. I think it is the 40m version but I am not sure. It does power up and make noise and a small amount of power in the 6.800 mhz range. Is anyone in the group willing to take a look at this one and see if you can make it play. I would sure like to have it repaired if possible. Of course I will pay someone to do that. What say anyone?

I had a chance to check out a Murania that one of out builders had put together, that he reported low audio.  On examining it, I found that the regeneration loop was too large, and the receiver was in full oscillation.

When the receiver is oscillating, it makes a large RF signal that is detected in the receiver IC, and drives down the AGC voltage.  This cuts the gain of the IC.  So, to set up the regen, the loop needs to be about the diameter of a pencil, no larger, and exactly perpendicular to the board, and to the ferrite rod.  That is neutral feedback.  If you then twist it slightly either way, it will increase or decrease the feedback.  It is hard to hear a change in volume with strong stations, because the AGC flattens out the volume.  If you hear whistles as you turn the tuning knob, it is oscillating, and the regeneration is too high.

Hopefully this helps some other builder!

This message is a bit off subject,  but since being employed is helpful to affording radios I hope the moderators will forgive me for posting this.  The company I have worked for since 1982 announced they are expanding and looking for a technician with good mechanical,  electronic,  Windows and other PC skills in the southeastern MO area. I know a lot of the work load is in the Mountain View area, but spans Southern IL across the eastern half of MO. If you want details please contact W9EBK at donw9ebk@...
