Time was when it seemed the issues would arrive almost six weeks before
the issue month.

In the '80s I was a subscriber to Ham Radio when CQ bought it out.
Supposedly I was to be compensated by a like number of issues of CQ. I
never received a one.

I was a lifetime subscriber to WorldRadio when CQ bought it. Well, they
were so kind as to supposedly extend my existing CQ subscription by
three years. I never put a pencil to it, but I don't think it quite
worked out as they claimed. They made WR a free downloadable PDF which
was fine as it was in color and so on. After a couple of years they put
it behind a digital pay wall (Zinio?). Since I had no assurance that I
could receive the product I paid for while using Linux, I did not
subscribe. WR ceased to exist soon after. A shame, really.

I hate not to support CQ Magazine with a subscription, but the 2 above
mentioned items are weighing heavily on my decision.
I agree to a point, but they've taken me around the block a couple of
times. Forgive me if I can't muster much sympathy. Besides, the rag
lost a lot when Dave Ingram became a silent key, though not their fault
as Dave was simply irreplaceable. I don't think CQ ever really
recovered from that blow, hence another reason I'm not enthused about
sending them money these days.

As far as electronic/digital issues, I absolutely will not subscribe to
any 'digital' magazine that publishes in any format other than 'pdf'.
Agreed 100%. The use of Zinio strikes me as a publisher believing all
of their customers are crooks. I could accept a personalized
watermarked PDF but will not accept Zinio.

The FASTEST 90 minutes in Radio, the FOXHUNT presents:

September 14 0100z t0 0230z, or for us that look at local clocks, 7pm MT Thursday evening.

This  event is where all the HOUNDS.. and ALL the FOXes of this season, go to the 20 acre woods, between the two trees marked .050 and .070, and the FOXes will call CQ FOX, the HOUNDS will all call the FOXes..  FOXes will be spread out.. the idea is for HOUNDS to work FOXes, FOXes to work HOUNDS.. and other FOXes.

Now, for the KIT part... those that want to be FOXes in future seasons, that have never been a FOX before, please contact Dale - WC7S, daleputnam@...  to be listed with the FOXes, so you can call CQ FOX, and be called by HOUNDS.

All FOXes will please post their logs on the qfox reflector as soon after the hunt as possible.

FOX and HOUND comments during the FOXHUNT may be seen on qfox or on FACEBOOK on

QFOX QRP Foxhunts

Keeping with the practice of FOXHUNTing, no freq information is to be exchanged that would assist anyone in finding a FOX. Questions as to what freq  a FOX is on, are viewed as cheating. There will be a posting of the FOXes to run, prior to the FOX-KIT-A-PALOOZA.

Y'all come, y'all have a blast, and y'all get ready for the fastest 90 minutes in radio.

Hello :)
Lots of good info on making PCBs
I really like the idea of using a Dremel tool
I try to study and think about what I am doing
At first I was thinking of using a laser printer
But I wonder If that is as simple as some claim
I think it likely takes the the right equipment and the right procedure
A learning curve before you get the knack of it :)
I do think that if you did make the investment though some really nice boards might be had !
I am learning !
At this point I do not even possess the ability to be able to measure :)
Someday I would like to own some tools and have the knowledge that I can use to make measurements !
The only tools I own at this point are
A multimeter  / regulated power supply /a dip meter / soldering station
My next measuring tool will likely be a LC meter !
I would like to someday like a oscilloscope and the knowledge to use it
But untill I learn something I do not need one
Lastly :)
I want to say I read everything posted !
I likely will not reply
I do not like to cause QRM lest I really really must !
But you can be you can be assured that I have in fact read and appreciate

There is no doubt I will have more questions
The next thing I'm going to try to do is make my own circuit boards
I think I can do some things with just a waterproof marking pen , some single-sided PC board and ferric chloride etchant !
The main point is to say Thank You !

I am new to electronics to say the least !
Any monkey even me can assemble a kit :)
What I want to do is build a QRP DUMMY LOAD !
This is what I have been looking at
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/E740062%20DummyLoad%20Manual%20Rev%20C.pdf

There is also a youtube video here !
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9FLgWoyfsY
My questions are ?????
Is it ok to use METAL FILM RESISTORS ???
Next question is it  :)
Is it perfectly okay if I use a ceramic disc capacitor ???
I have a bunch of : 0.01 uF Ceramic Capacitors
Mine are round disk shaped blue and marked 103
Neither on the video or in the literature
The capacitor used looks like mine though the values are the same !
I think what is being used is a monolithic capacitor ??

What I think is
that what I have will work
But not sure if metal foil resistors are inductive !
Also not absolutely positively sure the capacitors are compatible !
I just think !
Any comments will be appreciated !

Re: ferric chloride or peroxide and muriatic acid

Curt

It's been awhile, but after being concerned about storing a gallon of pool acid, ended up just buying a bottle of Ferric Chloride and using that with a hot plate.  Takes longer and not as exciting as the pool acid/peroxide but got the job done.  I also understand it lasts a very long time in storage.  Also, had the layout laser copied onto slick paper at the office store since didn't own a laser copier.  Used my old laminating machine.

Given I only made a few boards, and haven't made any in about a year, am glad didn't buy a laser printer or a gallon of acid.  My bottle of Ferric Chloride is about 3/4 full and still have a stack of PCB laminate.

I think if you plan to make a lot of  circuit boards or are an active experimenter, follow Rob's instructions in links he provides.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: New PDF file upload .... PCB MAKING

Very good presentation.
At the end there is SMT instructions.
My first HF rig was a KNIGHTSMITE... with insane tiny components.
http://www.learnmorsecode.com/pic/knightsmite.jpg

Later I found out that size 2512 1 watt SMT resistors were huge.... big enough to not mind building with them.
The next size down ..1812.. is half as long and still big enough to not loath SMT.

AND
size SOT-223 transistors are definitely a far cry from its baby brother.... SOT-23-3 which is the size in that PITA KNIGHTSMITE.
