Re: 4SQRP -DMR NET 10-10-2018

Charles W. Powell

Frank,

As for the HF band nets, be patient.  As band conditions change so will your ability to work the nets.  Your best bet is going to be 40 meters, but 80 still remains a possibility, especially in the winter months when the noise levels drop down.  I have had several impressive 80 meter QSOs with 5 watts during the winter months.

The DMR net is simply a net about QRP, QRP operations, antennas, experiments you have done, rigs you are building, problems you may be having. We are just getting started because we have a limited number of users to date.  It will grow with time.

Of course, any time is a good time to see if someone is around, and if so, to ask questions.  I envisions the TalkGroup as a tool for all of us to use in any way that’s legal on Amateur Radio.  As a reminder, we now have a permanent assignment of 31654 on the Brandmeister network.  You will not be able to access it if your local repeater is DMR-MARC, but you will if it is Brandmeister.  I don’t know anything about DMR plus.  Hotspots are fully compatible with Brandmeister and DMR-MARC has no hotspot support.

If you are having trouble getting DMR set up, let us know.  As noted before, it depends on what radio, hotspot or repeater you are using.  Try to keep the questions down to a few at a time.  Otherwise it gets too complicated.

Chas - NK8O

I've a Heathkit HW-7, an unbuilt Cricket 80A, and an ICOM. IC-765 that will crank down to 8-10 Watts. Sometimes I "think" I hear you guys, but might just be the ether Gremlins.   :-)
As far as DMR, I don't have a comparable radio. Got a Motorola Maxtrac 440 repeater, Alinco 605 mobile, QYT mobile, UV5R, and some home built stuff.
I just need to read and learn more about DMR to decide whether the "smiles are worth the tears".

The net has only occurred two times at this point. I believe the goal of the net and of the talk group in general is to have a place where QRP gear, operating, etc. and ham radio in general can be discussed. It's a way to extend the camaraderie found at our annual Ozarkcon conference to the rest of the year!

Many of the users, like myself, are new to digital voice modes and DMR in particular so I would expect some DMR discussion as people feel their way around and get their "stations" sorted out.

There was some mention that future nets will have a discussion topic where the group will discuss some aspect of radios, antennas, operating techniques, etc. I think we're definitely in a groth and evolution stage!

For those willing to wire it themselves the adapter frame .stl file is available on Thingiverse at:

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2625096

Easy print on a 3d printer.  For any close-by 4staters I would be happy to print one for you.
