Today's the day 117 years ago
Wayne Dillon
On this day in 1901 Guglielmo Marconi sent his famous and successful successful transatlantic wireless transmission from Poldu in England's county of Cornwall (Far SW point in England) to Newfoundland In Canada. Story here: Celebrate accordingly, I suggest calling into one of the 4 state nets this evening. Be blessed all, Wayne - NQ0RP QRP - EFFICIENCY AND SKILL, NOT POWER.

December and 2018 SSS results
John Lonigro
Well, the Second Sunday Sprint is finished for 2018. There were 12 entries this month, which is pretty typical. We can always use more participants though. The winner for December was Bill, KV6Z, with 21 QSO points. Congratulations, Bill. You will receive your certificate shortly. John, K4BAI, came in 2nd with 20 QSO points. And Carl, WB0CFF, was third with 18 points.
We had one new participant this month, Dave, WD8KRV, who was able to make one member QSO from his QTH of Tucson, AZ. Welcome, Dave. I'm sure making member contacts from Arizona is no easy task. Congratulations and we hope you will be a regular in next year's SSS. For the year, Carl, WB0CFF, finished with 230 QSO points and is the winner for 2018. If Carl had gone on another fishing trip last weekend, he still would have won, but by a much smaller margin. Bill, KV6Z, came in second for the year, with 203 points. And Chas, W2SH, came in third, with 187 points. Congratulations to Carl, Bill, and Chas for a fine showing for 2018. Your certificates will also show up shortly. For the year, there were 36 people who entered the Second Sunday Sprint and succeeded in making at least 1 QSO. Maybe more of us (myself included) need to make a New Year's resolution to participate in the 2019 Second Sunday Sprint. Again, congratulations to Bill for winning the December contest and to Carl, Bill, and Chas for their fine showing in 2018. 72 until 2019, John, AA0VE 4SQRP Contest Coordinator

Re: VIAS
Jim, N5IB
Hi John,
The original (white panel) BJ didn't call for filling any of the vias with solder. In fact, it's not strictly necessary even on the later versions. Just provides a little more conductivity along some critical traces. On your whited-panel version, if you wish, these vias could profit from being solder filled: - the vias at the inside of each of the three etched inductors - the via just to the right of D1 - the via just below C22 Jim, N5IB

VIAS
John Buckland
G’day
I am building a Bayou Jumper kit which has the white panel, and was shipped
before 16 April 2017.
Although it does not show on the building instruction manual, I just wanted
to check, that I do not have to solder up any of the VIAS on this kits PCB
board.
If I do, would you tell me which ones, please.

Re: oldie but a goldie Tenna dipper
I think there is plenty of room in there for a QRPGuys.com Thru-Hole Freq Counter - well, at least enough room, anyway. I felt guilty wasting all the extra space by putting mine in a mint tin.

Also got lucky and picked up the HF test kit that was on universal radios used gear list about 2 weeks ago and will be mounting in this case soon...I hope.

oldie but a goldie Tenna dipper
N8DAH <Dherron@...>
Just finished my tenna dipper kit from long ago. Its a souped up version with a multi turn 10k, I want to fit in a freq counter but I don't think I can fit any more into it! Also used a micro rotary for the band switching. Just thought I would share.

Re: G5RV Antenna
davemrtn
I use a MFJ 1:1 isolator balun on my G5RV. The 1:1 connects to the 450 ohm on the downlead and my coax connects to the 1:1. Is it good or bad ??? I don't know, but I do know I have a QSL card from South Africa for a contact I made using the G5RV with the 1:1 and using my Yaesu FT-817. And by the way, it was a SSB Phone contact !!! One other note, I am using 100
feet of LMR400 from the shack out to the 1:1 isolator. And I
do use a tuner, a MFJ-971. The tuner has meters on it, but I
have an Oak Hills Research WM-2 QRP wattmeter between the
radio and the tuner so I can see what the reflected power is
mush better than I can with the MFJ included meters. David Martin - NA1MH - Mountain

Re: G5RV Antenna
I use 21' of coax wrapped so its inside diameter is 6" with coax
feed on one end and straight to 450 Ohm Ladder Line.

Been using this for years and I have little to no trouble tuning the beast. Works QRP or QRO. My 2 cents. -- 73... Bob de k2ki k2ki@... k2ki.bb@... (Goes to my cell) SKCC #12195 NAQCC #2337 On 12/10/2018 4:39 PM, George H. Gates

George- I use a homebrewed dual-core (Guanella) balun. It's in a 4x4" weatherproof ABS enclosure mounted just outside my shack window. 73- Dave, K1SWL

Re: G5RV Antenna
Frank Perkins <N6CES.r@...>
Twenty years ago, my G5RV came with a balun. Dipole with coil in each leg, a length of window line from the center feedpoint, then a balun with SO239 to connect with 50ohm coax to shack. Worked great with ends about 38 ft, and middle sagged to about 35 ft. I fed it with about 50ft of RG-8 coax running along the ground to the balun dangling about 2 ft up from the ground. If yours didn't come with a 4 to 1 balun, buy or make one.

Re: G5RV Antenna
W9QS
I’ve used the G5RV for years. No balun and followed the original p,an by adjusting the ladderline to coax connection for the lowest SWR on 20 WITHOUT the tuner.

No balun on mine. Goes directly to coax which goes to the tuner. It works well with minimal RF in the shack. It's been my primary antenna for more than ten years. Martin K0BXB

Re: G5RV Antenna
Don, W9EBK
I had a home brewed G5RV some years ago. I used a LDG 4:1 balun to match the 450 Ohm ladder-line. It seemed to work as well as any other G5RV I have experienced. Don, W9EBK

Re: G5RV Antenna
Paul Smith
George,
I did have a G5RV and it was fed with coax no balun. When the wind broke the 450 ohm window line I spliced on a hunk of window line and used a 4-1 balun.
