I understand the software issue I belong to a Maker Group and the printers they use have a different software to control. All I can say is this is one of the best things I have gotten in a long time it will keep me occupied for a long time and I am sure it will you. You are a lucky man to have your wife pick out a present like that for you mine is not creative so to speak. The paddles are a blast to make the ones that I made for friends say they work great. I have but Cura doesn't support this printer as far as I can tell. That's due mainly to the fact that it also has the laser engraver and CNC carving heads on the the same XYZ platform. I probably could use Cura and set up the custom printer info to work with this one and may try it but the CAD and Slicer software that SnapMaker provides for this one was so easy to use and can communicate directly with the printer via USB or off line through a USB memory stick, I will probably stick with it. It'll slice and print down to the 20 micron level and that's about as precision as you can get for under 2-5K in one of these things. I had looked at Creality's Ender series printers and the price was really nice but my wife saw the SnapMaker on B & H Photo's website for under $700 with all 3 heads and even though the build area is not very big, unlike the Ender's, I can do about 5 x 5 x 5 and that's enough for the time being. First two projects I printed as tests worked just fine and both are useful stuff I grabbed from Thingiverse. I had found that site months ago and was drooling over all the stuff you could make with a 3D printer. A half kg roll of white PLA was included with the printer. I'm waiting for some black and blue 1 kg spools of PLA to get here tomorrow along with some smaller 200 gram spools of ABS in red, blue, green and orange. ABS is tougher but harder to work with so I'll probably stick to PLA but I did order some just to have on hand if I need tougher material. The 2nd project I printer yesterday in about an hour and a half was a nifty little portable Iambic paddle set and it printed nicely in white PLA. I still have to make up the paddle contacts and wire it but mechanically it's really sound and smooth. Thanks for the tips, Jim - W0EB

Thinginverse has quite a few ham radio related prints available. They have a nive Anderson power pole distribution panel using Ham Radio workbench pcb great for QRP. I made two paddles for friends but used magnets from Harbor freight instead of springs much simpler then the springs for me. You’ll have a blast with printer I’m 75 and feel like a kid with a new erector set at Christmas using the thing. Tom K0amd

Thanks Ray, I HAD done a bit of research into slicers, 3D CAD programs and the like. At one time, I could work in Auto-Cad, but that was many years back and I've forgotten most of what little I did know about that. However, this printer is a SnapMaker (Chinese) brand we got off B & H Photo with all sorts of warranties on it. Took 45 minutes to unpack, assemble, fire it up and calibrate (level the plate). First print project was a simple flat dipole center insulator designed to have an SO-239 in the middle and was 100 percent infill for strength. That one took about an hour and a half to print and printed without any issues at all. They included a 1 kg spool of white PLA as the starter filament but it will work with ABS as well as several others I can't remember right now. I've ordered some quarter kg spools of various PLA colors and a 1.5 kg spool of black ABS jut to have on hand. Thingiverse has a whole bunch of ham radio projects including a spinner knob for my KX2 and THAT is going to be the priority project as soon as the black ABS gets here. I might even print it in the white PLA as a test run to see just how long that one will take. The only drawback on this printer is it's 4.9 x 4.9 x 4.9 inch print area, but for now I can live with that (famous last words, I know!) 2nd project was a nice little dual lever paddle (also from Thingiverse) that only took a bit over an hour and a half to make all 4 parts. I still have to work out the paddle contacts and wire it up, but I do have the fixed ground contact (5mm x 2cm brass hex standoff) and solder lug in place - old ball point pen spring and all I need now is to make a through hole nut for each paddle (I have a Harbor Freight milling machine) and set up some adjustable contacts on each arm plus wire it all up. Like you said, it's just starting - LOL. Jim

I'd like to wish you a belated Happy Birthday! Similar story - my wife bought me a 3D printer for my 80th birthday. I will warn you - it becomes addictive. My first print was a power-pole adapter for my FT-817, next a case for the raspberry PI doing fldigi duty. Mine is only a printer so I have just had to learn solid design/ 3d cad stuff and the slicers to make the printer go. You will probably be looking at several varieties of software for design and control of the engraver and CNC as well. 77th Birthday Present
Some of you that attended OzarkCon this year and spoke with me may have heard the story of my wonderful wife getting me a 3D printer for my birthday which was a day before OzarkCon started (April 4th). It was supposed to be delivered today, but thanks to FedEx disregarding the specific delivery date, it was delivered Saturday while we were away. Thanks to my neighbor who intercepted the FedEx driver and picked up the package for me, it was all safe and sound when we got home yesterday (Sunday) afternoon.
I got it all unpacked, assembled and running about 2:15 this afternoon and it's been running on a project (antenna center insulator) since I got it calibrated. It's 3:20 Central right now and the insulator is about 75% printed. The attached picture was taken just after it got the base firmly laid down at about 25% . Once I got everything unpacked I discovered that it actually came with 3 separate print heads. The 3D filament printer, a 200 mW Laser engraving head and a 19000 RPM CNC carving head that can do wood, plastic, PC board material and light, non-ferrous metals with the right bit (included). Folks, a 77th birthday present (besides still being alive and kicking) don't get too much better than this! (Her birthday isn't until August 4th so I have lots of time yet to come up with something to top this. Will be hard though!) Jim Sheldon, W0EB

Also, incorporating some SMT (pre-mounted in this case) is a bold step and I think the right one. Saturday after the official closing I decided to take another listen on 40 meters. To my great surprise I was able to work a Mississippi station doing the MS QRP party. My antenna was of the "dummy load" type, with a loop of about 18 feet of #22 AWG wire thumb tacked to the wall and a 50 ohm resistor in series. It's like the one Terry WA0ITP shows on the 4SQRP page, except I included a series capacitor to cancel out the inductance. I am not a part of the 4SQRP/Ozarkcon Management Team but I'd add a comment about offering a video record. It's a huge amount of work to get a respectable video recording of nearly any event. It can be tough to get a good video of a lecture where the production people have a copy of the PowerPoint (or I'll date myself, "slides") to insert in post-production. The audio and lighting change constantly, people ask questions from so far "off camera" you can neither see or hear them, etc. As nice as it might be to a video version of the event for off site use I would agree that it is not practical to have it professionally done from a financial perspective and it would probably take more volunteers than the group could muster (who also knew how to do a good job!) do do it in house.
