Sorry I missed you on 80m Paul.  Noise got worse as the time went on.  Good that I was patient because first checkin wasn’t until 0143.

Well the 80 meter net was something of a surprise. I had a lull in the storms and after hearing Bill KV6Z so well on 40, I thought I would give NCS a try on 80. I must admit though the QRN was vicious.

Checkins:

WD0WF - Jim, MO
KV6Z - Bill, OK
WB0CFF - Carl, MN

NCS - NK8O - Chas, KS

Got a break in the weather and had a pretty good net tonight even with pretty bad QRN.
Got some close-in stations tonight that I haven't heard for a while.
QNIs were:

WA0ITP     Terry       IA
KL7IXI        Mike       MO
NK8O        Chas       KS
K0BXB       Martin     WI
KK5IB        Darryl     AR
KD0WF     Jim          MO
K4KRW     Richard   NC
KV6Z         Bill           OK (NCS)

Thanks everybody

Ge Chas and the Group
We’re having some thunder and light rain in Lebo, so I’m not connecting the tower for the 80 meter Net tonight.

You guys jump on if you can and have fun.

Hi everybody,

We are expecting more storms tonight, and after what happened last night I'm going to err on the side of caution.
I was standing in my garage after the storms had apparently cleared when a lightning bolt hit my neighbor's house.
That bright bolt and the crack and the smoke and the sparks were a frightening sight. It took out almost everything electronic in his house. I think my pacemaker skipped a beat and glad my defibrillator didn't go off. I hope to hear you tonight but if it's stormy, I'll see you next week.

I hope your coax was NOT connected to any of your radios, because with a close strike there is such a current surge or "sympathetic" strike that you could have damage too. Take it from an old commercial radio serviceman, I have seen it happen. My antennas are disconnected and grounded until I use them!!!  Russ   K3NLT

Ken,

Files for the MagicBox and SS-40 cases attached.

72,

Jim, K8IQY

PS...I need to get back with the 4 State QRP gang and maybe have them host these files on their web site.

You nailed it. That transistor had a short. Tested it with my Peak semiconductor tester. I stuck in another one. Now it toots quite well.

I am working to put together a Kortge transceiver using your class e tx, your rx, your audio filter and your variable xo, all linked with your magic box.

Your designs and manuals are great. Hope you will make more.

Thanks for the kind words Ken.  I'm getting too long in the tooth to do many more designs.  By the way, I have designed 3D printed cases for the MagicBox and SS-40 Rx/Tx combo if you have a way of printing them; you have a printer, local library has one, your UPS store has one etc.

Glad you found the defective transistor.  That is a rare failure; almost never happens with bipolar transistors.

72 and be well,

Jim, K8IQY
