Head Magnifier Redux

W6BOW

Dear All,

Some weeks ago there was a 4SQRP discussion re. a Head Magnifier.

I purchased same via E-Bay.

In my opinion a tool very well worth the reasonably small investment.

Thank you 4SQRP for the tip.

I have no financial interest.

I went thru the build with no problems and double-checked the values of everything as I built it. It powered up as designed on the mid build check but when it was time to do a full test there is no volume except on 2 spots of the volume dial. At those 2 spots I get a low static noise if I put my ear up to the speaker but then tuning has absolutely no effect. I will go thru the build again tonight step by step and maybe pull the 2 transistors and test those as well. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated..

Is there a forum where I might be able to get some direction on figuring out my issue with this build?

Oh well, I guess it is all in the name of fun....  If not a bit absurd.

Re: Origin of Maurania Name

I arrived at the same conclusion yesterday.  Thanks for confirming.

Jerry AA6KI

Origin of Maurania Name

Everett Catlin

The name of the radio comes from a 1935 movie serial. The Star was a singing Cowboy played by Gene Autry. It took place called Radio Ranch. There was an ancient civilization of " MU". MU sank beneath the ocean and some of its inhabitants survived in caverns beneath the sea. I guess things dried up and many years later where there was water there was land. Cowboy Gene Autry stumbles upon the civilization, now buried beneath his own Radio Ranch. The Muranians have developed technology far advanced to the surface residents. There is a rich supply of Radium and that draws unwanted speculators.

Bottom Line. The name of the Murania is derived from the civilization of Muranians who live 25,000 miles below the surface .All 12 episodes can be found on the net to view. This story was related to me in an e mail by David Cripe a little over a year ago.

I thought it was pretty neat to have a high tech antenna on a old SW receiver!

When I was in high school (late 60s), one of my classmates came home because he wanted to see my ham radio antenna. When I showed him my half-wave dipole with ladder feedline, he could not believe that something that simple could allow me to communicate with other ham operators. Hence, I showed him my "other" antenna, a beautiful wooden-frame loop antenna that I had inherited along with an old galena radio. That one did fit his idea of a "real" antenna and he later left, very satisfied with his finding. Some people seem to prefer preconceptions to reality, it seems.
