Re: Hilltoppers
Leland L. Bahr
I remember the name of the FCC inspector that came to my parents home. His name was Inspector Peterson. My parents were around 40 years old so he was probably around 50 years old. One thing was certain, FCC men NEVER smiled! Inspector Peterson worked out of the Chicago FCC office. The FCC gave ham exams at the Milwaukee Federal Building twice per year. The room they gave it in was a totally marble wall and floor room. It must have handled up to 100 people at a time. When they sent Morse Code you heard it three or four times as it bounced off the marble walls and floor. Lots of echo! When I was around 30 years old, I was living in a Western Chicago
suburb and decided to go for my Extra. That must have been around
1968. For sending code you could bring along your bug. Otherwise
you use the FCC hand key. I decided to take my bug and had it on
the seat next to me. As I was driving down the Expressway I
needed to stop suddenly. When I did this the bug went flying and
when it hit the floor it was all out of alignment. So I decided
to not take it into the Chicago FCC office. They first gave us
our 20 wpm receiving test. There were around five other guys
taking the test too. I past it with flying colors. Now I had to
send 20 wpm and I had to use their hand key. The inspector told
me to send 20 wpm for five minutes. (Mind you this was on a hand
key.) I gave him five minutes. He looked at me and thought for a
moment and then said, "Give me another minute." So I did. (By
this time my hand was getting tired.) He said, "I think you sent
19 wpm. Give me another minute." So I did and he again said , "I
think that was still 19." (My hand was now really getting
tired!) I did it one more time and he then said, "OK, that was
20!" I then went on to pass the written and got my Extra. (They
NEVER smiled!" In about January of 1954 my friend Tom Embach, WN9DXS and I,
WN9DRC got permission from school to miss school and take the
train from Milwaukee to Chicago to take our General exams at the
Chicago FCC office in the Federal Building there. We were I guess
around 15 years old. We made the trip and I passed the General.
Tom had to take the test one more time. Tom is still W9DXS and
lives in Mt. Home, Arkansas. Tom and I went to Chicago alone and
had no parents with us. I don't think you could do that today.

Since we are talking about Hilltoppers, how come the mods suggested by Dave are not listed in errata on 4SQRP? I just was aware of these mods. It may be a good idea to post them there. I did pick up the components from mouser. Hoping I got the correct ones.

Well now, that was a good AR story. Can imagine your nerves were a wreck when the guy introduced himself then checked your equipment and took your logs. Been hamming since 61 and knock on wood (head) no problems with FCC, although one time I did get chosen to act on their behalf - verifying equipment for a CB'er of all things. Long story so won't go into it. Short version - neighbors claimed his signals were turning the leaves brown on the trees in their yard...this was in Las Vegas, NV. If you are familiar with Las Vegas you know trees have issues in that dry heat. HI HI Thanks for the story. 73 de n4mj//glenn “PLEASE REMOVE all email addresses before you send it on and use BCC option when forwarding" Thank you!

As I said earlier, Bud, W9HIF and Joe, W9PYM were like oil and water. Bud teased Joe, but Joe was serious. I came home from school one day and was now a ham for around 6 months. My mother was waiting for me at the door. She said, Lee, there is a FCC Inspector in our living room and he would like to speak to you. I went to the living room and this very tall man was sitting in a chair with his coat draped over the sofa. (I'm sure my mother was wondering what kind of trouble I was in when the Federal government was calling on a 15 year old boy.) (I think his name was Mr. Johnson.) He introduced himself and asked to see my station which was in our basement. He looked my equipment over, a Hallicrafters S-38C and a Globe Scout 40A. Then he asked to see ALL my logs. (Back then you had to log in each time you threw the BIG Switch. That was true even if you were mobile.) All I could think was, was there ever a time I threw the SWITCH without logging it in??? Then he told me he was confiscating my logs and gave me a receipt for them. He said nothing further as to why he took them. (I didn't sleep well that night.) Later on I figured out why he took them. The FCC took Joe Collins, W9PYM, to court for jamming other stations, especially SSB operators with his 813 AM transmitter modulated by a pair of 810 tubes. The FCC figured a young 15 year old ham would most likely keep a good log and I lived a couple miles away from Joe and probably talked to him a lot. As it turned out my log had Joe in it when he did not have me logged into his log. Joe was not allowed to operate for one year after that trial. They used the log books to silence Joe for a year. All this happened during the first six months of being a ham radio operator. Lee, w0vt ex, w9drc

I screwed up the song, Little Red Ridding Hood:
The words actually were: "How could Red Riding Hood be so very good with that wolf knocking at her door? Mother and Father she had none, but where in the world did all that money come from? Please don't ask it, who filled her basket, the story books will never tell!" (Been a few years since I saw Earl in a corner with a phonograph on his lap playing that 78! The song was so touching to Earl he was crying each time he played it. I think a few beers in Earl helped.) Lee, w0vt ex:w9drc

Re: Hilltoppers
Leland L. Bahr
Paul, Yes, I was a very close friend of Bud and Emily, his wife. Emily
is now in her upper 90s and we keep in touch. Both Bud and Emily
were like big brother and sister to me as I was growing up. They
were at my wedding and we always went to the Fon du Lac banquet
together. I remember a lot of stories about Bud, W9HIF who was
also W9EZZ known as Lowell. (Bud and Lowell never talked to one
another!) Bye the way, Bud's son in law practiced law in Green
Bay and was/is a ham. Bud and Joe Collins, W9PYM were like oil
and water. They loved to JAMB one another. (AM vs SSB War, back
in the 50s.) Bud's closest friend was Earl Jenkins, W9LUQ and
engineer at KFIZ in Fon du Lac. Once in awhile a bunch of
Wisconsin hams would get together for a JAM session. Bud played
drums. I remember Earl got plastered at one of these jam
sessions. I found him in a corner on the floor with a wind up
phonograph player on his lap. He was playing a 78 and crying.
The song was, "How Could Red Ridding Hood". The words were: How
could Red Riding Hood be so very good with that wolf knocking at
her door? Please don't ask it, who filled her basket, the story
will never tell!" The other side was: "Hello Bluebird". Earl
cried as he played the record over and over as he kept the player
wound. Bud had a 32 inch Muntz TV operating facing the rear of
his station wagon. In the Summer he used to tote a toboggan on
the top of his station wagon. At the Fon du Lac banquet, he would
place his QSL card in the men's urinals and then proceed all night
to inquire who placed his QSL in the urinals! When I was in my
early years of collage, I used to date a girl from Stougton.
(That is another story. A blue eyed blond Norwegian bomb shell.
Her name was Carol Auby. Her older brother worked at Ray O Vac.)
Bud and I used to go to a low class bar in downtown Milwaukee once
in awhile. One dollar would buy you a shot of whisky, a glass of
beer, and a ham hock. Yes, I remember Bud! Back then most hams
were mobile on 3950 khz AM. That was the Wisconsin ham watering
hole frequency. Lee w0vt, ex W9DRC

If 4SQRP is considering another small run of the Hilltopper, I'd suggest you make it also available in a 30 meter version. I certainly would order one. That way you could do a larger batch of Hilltoppers. (Half 20/40 meters for stragglers and 30 meters for those wanting more of the Benson design and already Hilltopper owners.) This is too nice a transceiver to go away. It's Dave Benson's best kit. Lee, w0vt
