I made my cricket so that I can use any crystal :) And other nonsensical folly :)
Frank Artieta
Hello :)
I now have SIP sockets installed on all my crickets I am sure there are lots of options as far as sockets for crystals ! I do not like the new DIP socket ! I likely do not understand How to make the DIP sock work properly ? I think I would bend up my little crystals ! I adapted a FT43 socket to plug into the SIP Or I can plug the little crystals into the SIP socket quite easily Now I can use all my crystals ! I often think maybe I ought to choose what I think is the best frequency ans solder the crystal in permanently ! After all :) A huge part of fun from a lot of my QRP comes from the fact that I am rockbound ! I think maybe a problem with QRP operation is that maybe we're spread out too wide across the Bands I mean of course QRP operators who would like to work other QRP operators :) Like a cricket to cricket :) On 80 meters I think I will stay on the colorburst frequency 3.579 On 40 I think it will be 7.122 ! I do not have any QRP gear that works 30 I think I might wait to see if we get out of this deep ditch before I become infatuated with 30 meters :) Anyhow :) A a specific frequency and time would work wonders for QRP to QRP contacts :) I yesterday reinstalled my antenna ! It is a 135 foot dipole fed by 450 ohm line I surly hope conditions improve as we start moving forward towards winter ! 72 73 88 and I know no more :)

QRP, CLONES, $$$, and concience.
W6BOW
Dear 4SQRP,
Please let me know if the following is not an appropriate post to the 4SQRP group. I thought it relevant.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByGeUlNsHiU&feature=youtu.be
My (W6BOW) "comment" ...
Kevin. Excellent video in every respect. I'm on a tight budget and would
have jumped on this unbelievable bargain but for your clone/common
source opinions and conclusions. I'm now seriously thinking about
purchasing a kit direct from Chris and building with using skills
acquired building my 4SQRP Group Hilltopper20. Chinese economic/tech
depredations are hot button topics. I'm old enough to remember lots of
ill-will during the era of "Japan Inc.". At clone retail prices
(free shipping included!) I have to wonder what kind of a living the
Chinese assemblers and "kitters" are earning for their labor. I'm old
enough to remember the similarly fraught era of "Japan Inc.". Kudos are
due you for the aplomb with which you address the issues.

<http://www.arrl.org/files/file/2019%20Board%20of%20Directors/Final%20Minutes%20July%202019.pdf> , recommend corralling all the email robot stations (minute 31) to the current ACDS sub bands. It is important for the survival of cw, and all narrow band modes operating in the RTTY/Data amateur radio sub bands, that the ARRL directors hear from each one of you on the issue. Winlink has charged their supporters to get “angry” and contact their directors to oppose confining all automatic activity to the defined ACDS sub bands. If you’ve ever had one of these robots get activated on top of your QSO’s you know what the problem is. Winlink is also opposed to the idea that all digital amateur transmissions should be open to copy over the air. As of now I’ve seen some rather venomous emails on other lists from the emcomm “save the world” crowd and the blue water boating forums are lighting up in response to the “get angry” Winlink request. At stake is loss of free email for the boaters, and the emcomm contingent believes they have a “statutory obligation” to ply their trade. Emcomm is important but it’s a voluntary activity, not an obligation. Please contact your ARRL division director and anyone else you can think of to counter the “get angry” request by Winlink, unless you want the bands to turn into a Winlink email free fire zone. Those of you that can remember what RM-11306 tried to do, Winlink everywhere, including the phone bands, know what’s at stake if the Winlink bunch flood the directors and don’t hear from anyone else. Full disclosure, I’m the author of FCC RM-11831 that sort of kicked off this firestorm. Feel free to cross post this to any lists that may have an interest in defeating the “get angry” Winlink spectrum take over. You may see this more than once. Ron K0IDT

Re: Nouveau 75 Help needed
Bill VanKirk
Dave, I received the mod kit for the Nouveau yesterday and got it installed today. The receive audio sounds great. My transmit audio is still bad though. Had a muffled sound and I have a buzzing sound on the audio when the mic is keyed. I am not a surface mount guy so can't do a lot of trouble shooting but wonder if you have any suggestions on what to check. Appreciate your comments. 73 Bill

Frank Artieta
I just today built a NS 40 transmitter !
I put it on my dummy load and plugged it into my 12-volt lead-acid battery All is wonderful :) The thing is ! My kit did not have a heat sink Least I never ever remember seeing one What I wonder is Do I really need a heat sink for the IRF510 I use a 4.5 Ah sealed lead acid battery as my primary power source ! It is fully charged at about 12.8 volts I have not tested anything to see power this transmitter is actually putting out I am not the kind of fella who has any ambition to drive anything hard ! I just want it to percolate Hope this makes sense ! I always appreciate any feedback :) 72 73 88 de KD5ALD

Re: Hilltoppers
Leland L. Bahr
I remember the name of the FCC inspector that came to my parents home. His name was Inspector Peterson. My parents were around 40 years old so he was probably around 50 years old. One thing was certain, FCC men NEVER smiled! Inspector Peterson worked out of the Chicago FCC office. The FCC gave ham exams at the Milwaukee Federal Building twice per year. The room they gave it in was a totally marble wall and floor room. It must have handled up to 100 people at a time. When they sent Morse Code you heard it three or four times as it bounced off the marble walls and floor. Lots of echo! When I was around 30 years old, I was living in a Western Chicago
suburb and decided to go for my Extra. That must have been around
1968. For sending code you could bring along your bug. Otherwise
you use the FCC hand key. I decided to take my bug and had it on
the seat next to me. As I was driving down the Expressway I
needed to stop suddenly. When I did this the bug went flying and
when it hit the floor it was all out of alignment. So I decided
to not take it into the Chicago FCC office. They first gave us
our 20 wpm receiving test. There were around five other guys
taking the test too. I past it with flying colors. Now I had to
send 20 wpm and I had to use their hand key. The inspector told
me to send 20 wpm for five minutes. (Mind you this was on a hand
key.) I gave him five minutes. He looked at me and thought for a
moment and then said, "Give me another minute." So I did. (By
this time my hand was getting tired.) He said, "I think you sent
19 wpm. Give me another minute." So I did and he again said , "I
think that was still 19." (My hand was now really getting
tired!) I did it one more time and he then said, "OK, that was
20!" I then went on to pass the written and got my Extra. (They
NEVER smiled!" In about January of 1954 my friend Tom Embach, WN9DXS and I,
WN9DRC got permission from school to miss school and take the
train from Milwaukee to Chicago to take our General exams at the
Chicago FCC office in the Federal Building there. We were I guess
around 15 years old. We made the trip and I passed the General.
Tom had to take the test one more time. Tom is still W9DXS and
lives in Mt. Home, Arkansas. Tom and I went to Chicago alone and
had no parents with us. I don't think you could do that today.

Since we are talking about Hilltoppers, how come the mods suggested by Dave are not listed in errata on 4SQRP? I just was aware of these mods. It may be a good idea to post them there. I did pick up the components from mouser. Hoping I got the correct ones.
