Tonight's Nets
w2sh@...
Someone asked about WA4G?.
That was WA4GIR, Joe. He was a robust 599 here. He is the long-serving NCS of the Knightlite's QRP net that meets Sundays on 80m at 2100 ET. It used to be on 3.575 mHz.but the growth of digital sigs has squeezed us down to around 3.571 mHz. A well attended
net and the QNIs get somewhat rag chewy, and interestingly so.
Thursdays at 2030ET see the New England QRP night on 3.566 mHz.

Re: 80m tonight
w2sh@...
Plenty of QRN here also. But on 80m I worked Paul WA9PWP close to the net's start time. I was 559, he was 579, but I've got about an hour more darkness than Paul.
On 40m I was the first QNI with NØYJ, tonight's NCS. I didn't hear any other QNIs thereafter. Guess the band was too long for the 4S heart land stations.

Dale's sigs were 229 at best.
heard a station on 40m and I believe he was in QSO with Chas, W2SH. If it was Chas his sigs were about like Dale's.
Bands continue to be awful at best.

OK. Tnx for confirming that was Chas I heard on 40 tonight. Also, I did get part of a WA4 call - WA4G. Couldn't get the IR though. 73 de n4mj//glenn “PLEASE REMOVE all email addresses before you send it on and use BCC option when forwarding" Thank you!

W6SFM Bug Roundup Event is coming soon! Save the Date
SFMARC W6SFM
Announcing W6SFM's BUG ROUNDUP
The Samuel F. Morse Amateur Radio Club, a Sacramento, California based CW enthusiast club wanted a special time to bring bug operators together on the air. In the same spirit as ARRL's Straight Key Night, participants are encouraged to make simple, conversational, “chewing-the-fat” QSOs using their bug type key. This is an opportunity to exercise, share and exhibit your personalized fist. This is NOT a contest. However, there is a very easy and quick registration form found at https://w6sfm.com/bug-roundup/. Once you've optionally registered for the event simply Call "CQ BR" so folks know you are a Bug Roundup Participant. So lets grab that bug, clean those contacts, and let’er fly! We want to hear that “Banana Boat / Lake Erie Swing" or that commercial KPH/WCC quality fist on-the-air. Reserve the date! The event begins on Friday November 15th (00:00 UTC) and concludes Sunday November 17th (00:00 UTC) That's 4:00 PM Friday evening until 4 PM Pacific Time (LOCAL) For more information, to register your station, and to help assist in spotting, potentially increasing QSOs, an On-line chat window link can be found near the bottom of Bug Roundup home page located at https://w6sfm.com/bug-roundup/ We hope to hear you all on the air! 73, W6SFM

Re: Freq-Mite
Joe Street
Or if the production is stopped is there any chance to get the code so that a person could burn thier own chip? Even a hex file would be a blessing for anyone who has a failure or wants to press on with an old design. I found a bare board for the venerable NC2030 that requires the freq-mite for example. I went looking for this but came up empty too. Joe ve3vxo

Re: nouveau 75 Dave Cripe/Voltage Checks
W9GY <jeffw9gy@...>
I've made some progress on Q11 overheating, and 'crud' in the modulation on this unit. Various bypass capacitors on Q11 seemed to help, but I didn't think that the FET was cool enough and the envelope didn't seem as clean as it should be. So I decided to take a look at why the device was running with so much current. To make a long story short, I paralleled R43 with a 470 ohm resistor. This lowered the drive to Q12 and thus reduced the excessive current through Q11. Now the transistor runs cool. There appears to still be sufficient modulation capability in both directions, and the spurious signals now appear to be gone.

Re: nouveau 75 Dave Cripe/Voltage Checks
W9GY <jeffw9gy@...>
I bypassed the gate of Q11 with a 1 MFD electrolytic as suggested by Bob, W9RAN. I now get modulation envelope above and below the unmodulated carrier, which is what I would expect. However, the device is still running too hot. More later...

Re: nouveau 75 Dave Cripe/Voltage Checks
nm0s_qrp <ai9e_qrp@...>
Bob, that seems like a good insight. I have a suspicion that there may be an underlying cause, possibly a manufacturing issue causing the small SMT transistors to leak. My operating theory is that there may be some solder paste under the SMT parts that is allowing some current leakage. This would cause Q12 and Q11 to be turned on simultaneously, resulting in the high dissipation you observed, and may cause the oscillations you are seeing. I'm going to do some checking to see what I can find.
