Battery Day!
Steve <wa0pwk@...>
Everyone knows it's President's Day, but did you know it's also Battery Day?
Today is Alessandro Volta's birthday. He was born on this day in 1745 and is credited with the first electrochemical battery for producing DC back in 1800. The 'Voltaic Pile' was a battery consisting of alternating disks of silver and zinc separated by cardboard soaked in sulfuric acid. The invention led to moving away from 'static' electricity which had dominated electrical research for decades. Much of the chemical research of the 19th century was for the improvement of battery technology, especially after the invention of the telegraph which depended on it. The term "battery" was coined by Benjamin Franklin about 50 years before the voltaic pile when he likened a group of Leyden Jars (early capacitors) to a 'battery' of cannons. 73 de Steve WA0PWK

What is the difference between a fisherman and a QRPp-Operator?
Hajo Dezelski <dl1sdz@...>
None, they both need patience ;-)
I just assembled the Hendricks 41 dB Attenuator and made some remarks: The reason, I tried to join your nets, but I had no chance. So there was no reason to stay with that famous 5 Watt. I decided to pull that power down and hopefully you will hear me now in QRPp ;-)

David, Issues or questions related to the 'e-mail reflector' should be sent to AE5K. To all, please notice the "Contact Us" button on the 4sqrp web page. this will help the correct person when help is needed.

Re: Fw: Mechanical problem

I have used an IC mount for an 8 pin chip before and cut it up into 8 different pieces. I soldered the pin end to the board then could mount the desired device into the pins. This is also useful for parts that you may want to be able to exchange in the future for experiments or changing freq. or functions. I end up destroying a few in the process but it is an inexpensive way to do this. Here is an of a part to cut up: http://www.newark.com/multicomp/2227mc-18-03-08-f1/connector-dip-socket-18way-pc-board/dp/98K7083

Re: Fw: Mechanical problem
Dale Putnam
Unfortunately, the hole through cladding connects the top of the board to the bottom of the board, in three cases. Those in particular are critical to have continuity. The others not so much just from the board to the display board. The pins in question fit into the holes with a careful and firm effort, providing a modicum of phyisical strength to the display board, and firmly keeping it in place, without relying entirely on physically weak solder to hold it in place. Depending on which holes have been drilled, repairs may be done with no additional damage to the board, by adding #30 silver coated wire from top to bottom through the holes that require it, and placing the connectors in place, soldering them very well. BE attentive to the way the connectors must be placed, or it won't fit the case, when completed. After the display is in place, an ohmmeter may be a very good friend, to insure connectivity is accomplished. Good Luck, Have a great day, --... ...-- Dale - WC7S in Wy To: 4sqrp@... From: wb9nlz@... IHAB Beacon
WA0ITP
I'm posting this so you dont spend continue to look for the IHAB9 Beacon on
14.323. The launch was at 1500z and the beacon worked well until 1553z when it developed a chirp, then it failed at 1615z. The ballooon is expected to land near Burlington, IA, but without ground tracking or the beacon, recovery is doubtful. It is hoped that someone will find it and call Marshall's phone number to report the discovery. Thanx for listening. There will be more launches this summer. ---------------------------------- I love this radio stuff ! 72 WAITP www.wa0itp.com www.4sqrp.com www.qrpspots.com

IHAB 9 LAunCh Update
WA0ITP
The launch took place at 9AM CST as planned. The CW beacon is working well I
have it at abt 569 on 14.323.5. The GPS isnt working at this point in the flight, so there is no tracking available. If it gains a lock tracking will be availabe on this web page http://aprs.fi/#!call=a%2FW0OTM-2%2Ca%2FW0OTM-11&timerange=3600&tail=3600 ---------------------------------- I love this radio stuff ! 72 WAITP www.wa0itp.com www.4sqrp.com www.qrpspots.com

T/R Switching
Jim, ND9M / VQ9JC
Tks to everybody who replied both on and off list to my T/R Switching query. Overall, it looks like the Magic Box is the way to go. I can experiment and expand from there.
Forecast: Partly QRP with a chance of smoke!

From: Jim, ND9M / VQ9JC To: 4sqrp <4sqrp@...> Sent: Wed, Feb 13, 2013 4:06 pm Subject: T/R Switching As a recent joiner of 4SQRP, I'm looking forward to getting back into building my own stuff. The NS-40 seems to be a popular and well designed rig, and my plan is to use my FT-857 for the RX side. Otherwise, the 857 is my day-to-day rig, and I have to protect it. (For QRP use, I drop the drive down and measure the output on an external wattmeter.)
So here's a newbie query from an old time ham (me!) who should know the answer but doesn't: What is everyone else who uses separate TX and RX units doing to mute their RXs when the TXs are doing their thing? A rule of thumb was given me a few days ago that there must be at least 40 dB attenuation to protect the RX front end, but that's also going to depend on what the TX power is to start with.
My old Hallicrafters RXs could handle a bit of a pop at QRP levels when I did manual switching. I'm a bit leery however about subjecting the "newfangled" 857 to similar treatment. I never had a Dow key which would've done nicely for the boat anchors, but - assuming I could put my hands on one - would a Dow key with its mechanical relay have fast enough response time to protect the 857's front end?
What other alternatives are currently in play?
Tks/73,

Dave, I've had a little trouble with my truck. I replaced what the shop said was a bad battery, but it seems to be still running a little rough. I think we'll stay near town until I'm convinced that's all it was. We'll try to make it next month. Say hello to everyone for us! Hope to see you soon. 73 Daniel KD0SZS and Diana
