Re: Ozark Patrol Audio Transformer and Jack
One thing that might be affecting regeneration is the "gimmick" capacitor C12. You might need more twists or fewer twists. I found it really changes the regeneration level a LOT. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 73, Gwen, NG3P

My addition to Hilltopper rig
Paul Goemans
Greetings!
I built my Hilltopper 40 way back when, and built in an additional
feature. The rig has no power switch, so I added a “power on” LED. That way I
won’t forget to disconnect power to the rig if I walk away for awhile. Useful if
you are running battery power!
See pictures. The “window” square on the top panel is a great spot for the
LED. I drilled half way through from the back side to clear the metallization.
You can drill all the way through if you wish. Use whatever color LED you want;,
I used a green one from my junk box. Mount LED on the cathode of reverse
polarity diode D1 so it just reaches the hole you drilled. Add suitable dropping
resistor to give you desired brightness/ current. I used a 3.3K 1/4 watt
resistor. The left side of the DC in jack is a convenient ground point. See
second photo.

Thanks Johnny. I think he is already following this incident. BTW, this is the rig that a previous ham gave up on in frustration. You might remember his posts. I decided to take on the troubleshooting even though I'm not very good at it. I hope to make it a good receiver for my grandkids. I got started in ham radio with an Ocean Hopper.

I ran the troubleshooting voltages in the Assembly Manual. The battery voltage iws 8.434v. The following voltages are in list order: 0.000 0.889 7.849 0.615 3.454 2.772 4.815 Looks like the voltages on the collectors of Q1 and Q3 are high. I have gone through the soldering on the regenerative circuit and touched up each one. Still no regeneration. I replaced D1, but don't have (or can't find) 1N914 diodes. Haven't pulled and tested them yet. Any suggestions? Regards, Dlae

G-QRP Club On-Line Convention 5-6 September
Graham G3MFJ
From Steve Hartley - chairman of the G-QRP Club
Folks
I am just out of this week's progress meeting for the Convention and all is on track for it to be a great weekend of live QRP talks with Q&A sessions after each one. We have been able to secure speakers to cover the top 10 topics that were suggested in the survey we carried out including construction, antennas, digital modes, propagation test equipment, portable operations and more.
The ticket sales have been steady through the week and we have now sold over half of the seats available. If you have not yet booked, I would encourage you to do so in order to make sure you do not miss out; the Eventbrite system works really well but if you get stuck, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
The full programme is on the Club website, along with details on how to book tickets and some FAQs about the event: http://www.gqrp.com/

A nice thing about the Hilltopper is you don't have to go through a bunch of menus to use this radio. You need to push a button to hear the audio frequency read out, change tuning steps, or change RIT for example, but these are not constantly used functions and there are not many of them to activate. It's a simple to use radio putting out an honest 5 watts. (You don't need to memorize or have a cheat sheet handy to be able to use this radio.) Not a lot of frills but a great basic transceiver doing the basic things a transceiver needs to do and it does it very well. The parts population is not super close either making construction much easier too. The more you get to know this transceiver, the more you realize how nice it really is. Lee w0vt, w5drc

Re: New Hilltopper20/40

Lee- Thanks for your post, and nice to see the Hilltopper offered once more! Glad to hear that the top cover is now 'generic'. I used my Hilltopper-40 for the recent Skeeter Hunt event to the tune of 11 contacts. Most of those were in the first 20 minutes of operation. Perhaps the most interesting of those was with AF3Z-Jim in PA. He was running 0.5W crystal-controlled, and was apparently operating from the grandkids' treehouse in their backyard. 73- Dave, K1SWL

Re: New Hilltopper20/40
Leland L. Bahr
I might add, there are a number of Novice Boat Anchor transmitter collectors that operate on 7100-7125. Many of these guys are primarily restorers of older tube transmitters and receivers. Many restore and operate old tube type Novice transmitters. They are for the most part older hams reliving their youth using old gear. CW is not their primary interest. So these guys, for the most part, are not "CW speed demons" and they feel more relaxed operating between 7100-7125. It's more like operating on an old Novice Band without all the clutter. Any new ham interested in CW would most likely enjoy this part of 40 meters when first getting started with CW.

I received my two new Hilltopper kits today from the new batch just released! Thanks 4SQRP for your efforts. (I plan to convert the new 40 meter kit to 30 meters as I already own a 40 and 20 meter Hilltopper. If possible, I'd like to turn the 20 meter kit into a 17 or 15 meter transceiver.) This is a nice kit. If you missed out on prior Hilltopper offerings, you might consider purchasing one now while they are again available.
(True 5 watts without insane voltage applied to the radio, keyer, single conversion receiver, covers the entire band so for 40 meters you not only have the lower cw frequencies but the often used 7100-7125 khz portion of the band not available on some kits. (I like the 7100-7125 portion of the band.) On receive it draws only 70 ma and the rig has reverse voltage protection. The two SMT parts are preinstalled on the board. The three BS-170 transistors, in the final, are inexpensive to replace if ever needed. You also get a case for the radio. The parts are well laid out with individual packages as you build up the transceiver. Each bag is marked for each of the build steps. The parts count is not excessive either in this kit. I also noticed, unlike in the earlier offering, the case for this offering no longer states the case is for 40 meters or 20 meters. It just says "Hilltopper". (Great news for me as I plan to use the radios on other bands then 20 and 40 meters.) Although this kit is not considered a beginners project, I suspect more first time builders will have success building this kit then many other I have seen. The manual is superb. My only wish is I would have liked the keyer to be a memory keyer. That means I'll be using an outboard keyer with this transceiver. Lee, w0vt, w5drc

Hi Gang,
About two weeks ago Gloria (WD5CMA) and I had a chance to spend a week at our son (W5WWX) and daughter-in-law's cabin the the north Georgia mountains (Blue Ridge GA) inside the Chatahoochee National Forest. Great spot for "luxury" POTA, with mains power, A/C, comfy furnishings, kitchen, cable TV, WiFi, hot tub, etc. Rough duty, but somebody's got to get those Parks On The Air :^))
Antennas were held up by a Jackite pole strapped to the deck railing. The deck at that spot is 17' above ground level, so for 20m it was a full size dipole suspended vertically, on 40m it was a slight sloper. Rig, for most of the time, was the K2-QRP running off a 7 aH AGM battery that was topped up periodically with a 600 mA solar panel. Had short-lived mini-pileups most days on both CW and SSB after spotting on the POTA site.
But for a brief 90 minute spell, I threw caution to winds and broke out the 20m Spy Radio, based on Dave Benson's Green Mountain 20, but packaged to look like the Bayou Jumper. A photo is attached. Output is about 1.5 to 2.0 W depending on battery health. Here the battery was three 18650 Li-ion cells in series.
I dived right into the roiling fray of the NA Sprint on 20m, and in that 90 minute span, with a couple of snack breaks thrown in, made 25 Qs, working all but three or four of the stations I called. It was a barrel of fun. So nice to be in an RF quiet environment. So quiet I could hear some slight noise from my Samlex switching 20A supply when I broke it out for a few minutes the next day. Never heard any amid the RF soup at the home QTH in Baton Rouge.
But probably the neatest part was introducing our grand daughter, Tessa, to ham radio. Not quite 3 years old yet, she was fascinated with the straight key and keyer, and we even managed a few words of chat back to grandma on 2m when we were out walking the trails on our "bear hunts". Couple of photos attached as well. All-in-all a wonderful getaway.
Blatant advertisement - they do list the cabin on airbnb - There's no permanent antenna installed, but a fishing pole, some wire and string is all that's needed. I shan't post a link here - that would be too blatant - but contact me privately if you wish.
