Question Related to My NS40 Transmitter

Bobby Drummond

Will the IRF510 in the NS40 transmitter by 4States handle 24 volts DC in the final of the transmitter safely?

If I add a 12 or 15 volt regulator in series with the 2N7000 oscillator transistor (to keep the voltage on it lower than the final's new voltage) and supply 24 volts to the IR510 circuit, will it handle the extra voltage?

I assume it might need a better heat sink if so.  I would also insert a DC switching circuit in series with the power to the transmitter so I would only be switching low voltage and low current DC voltage to effect the same thing as direct key switching.

What would be the approximate power output from the transmitter be in that case?

Picked up a SSCPO at the last convention and, need to have a code oscillator (and also dying to do something electronic!!), I built up the kit last night. It worked right off the bat and it sounded great with the built in key. I intend to build in a jack so I can use it with external keys. The only 'tweak' I had to make on the kit is to add two flat washers between the two spacers and the key strip to add some needed clearance between the key contact (i.e. the head of the screw holding the knob in place) and the pc board connection.

A fun build and a great sounding code oscillator.

SSS Results for September

John Lonigro

Well, things are starting to get interesting.  Carl, WB0CFF and John, K4BAI both came in with 34 QSO points, a great showing.  With that, John has wrested the lead away from Chas, W2SH.  John now has 140 QSO points for the year and Chas has 138, a virtual tie with 3 months to go in the annual contest.  Both Carl and John will be receiving their certificates for being the September co-winners.

There's more news:  We had three first-time participants this month and I need to recognize them.  First was Rick, AA4W, from Georgetown, FL.  Rick not only participated.  He was able to get 24 points this month, propelling him into 11th place.  Since the others had an eight month lead, that is fantastic.  Congratulations, Rick. Next was Duane, WI8J, from Battlecreek MI.  Duane was able to get 10 points, which was pretty good considering he had to contend with a lot of "snap, crackle, and pop" in his signal (hi).  The third first-time participant was Ed, WD7Y, from Reno, NV.  Welcome to all three of you.  I hope you are able to join us from now on.

72 until October,

John, AA0VE
