Bayou Jumper underway

Mark Hansen

My kit arrived today and is well underway on the bench. So far it is a fun build. My son and I are going to fashion the wooden box to house it. I have also ordered the Hi-Per Mite filter. That sounds like a great addition from what I have seen and heard on YouTube.

I wonder if most people build the filter in to the unit or use it as an external addon. That would have the advantage of being used with other rigs. I'm leaning toward building it into the rig and just adding a switch.

I'm in favor of bringing back a version of the Soup'er Up'er as well!

This is a great idea, Terry. I "liquidated" all my tube stuff awhile back and do not care to build anymore glowbug rigs. Besides, there's a constant high voltage power supply requirement which is tough to meet with the limited and pricey availability of transformers. Don't get me started on thermal drift etc😵.

I enjoy chasing NDBs.  How about an NDB receiver with a nice tight audio band pass filter?

I think this will be easier than ordering all the individual boards?

They shouldn’t be very pricey?

I'm still waiting on the buildathon kit but here you go: https://www.qrpme.com/?p=product&id=F20
Look through that. He had it working and so did someone that was helping him. There were a couple of different PS and ways to tame them.
Because of issues he's not been able to deliver the kit yet. Most all of us that signed up decided to go through with the kit building anyway...

Check out "The Simplest Transmitter " from CQ magazine about 1960. It can use a 6V6.6K6,6L6 and several other tubes. Three capacitors, three resistors and two coils. I made mine with plug in coils so it would work on 160, 80, 40 and 20 meters.

I like the idea of the tube based xcvr. I've never built one, though I do have an FT-101 upstairs that I want to recap, retube, and neutralize. There's something wonky in the thing...when it has been on for a while, suddenly receive gain drops by about half. I'm thinking it's some thermal issue somewhere, but don't even have a clue where to start looking. Otherwise, it's a great radio. So I wouldn't mind a tube xcvr kit, to help me learn more about tube sets.

Other than that, getting the Freq-Mite back into availability, even if it needs a redesign so it can make use of parts that ARE available...as I gather the reason it's not currently available is because of some parts being hard or impossible to get? I've got several radios that have NO way to determine what frequency they're on, either receive or transmit, and I'd like to be able to use them with some reliable way to know WHERE I'm using them!

I once talked to a ham, John Portune, W6NBC, who had an article about QRP power level PCB traps for antennas. I even have his etching overlays for the boards. I just don't know enough about traps to be able to properly tune the things. So I was thinking the club could approach him, and convert his PCB designs to Kicad or Eagle or something, then send them to one of the PCB houses for etching a bunch of 'em. Work up a way to reliably tune them up, and make them available as a trapped antenna kit for QRP. He told me they're available for use, but for a club kit I'd probably drop him a note.

Here's his original QST article on the PCB traps: http://w6nbc.com/articles/2018-05QSTtraps.pdf

The Nixie community has several options for HV power supplies.

Just google “Nixie high voltage power supply”
Most are geared to 170 volts DC but there are some that are adjustable to near 450 volts DC.

I like the idea of a tube radio. Like someone else said, I got into ham radio in 1992. Just a couple years to late to build any Heathkits...

Hello Jess Gypin,

What might the eBay link be for the crystal spotter you purchased for $10?

Jim, N5IB would you allow the 4SQRP group to sell either the PC board or a kit for your Crystal Spotter?  I built one myself with your help and guidance when the Bayou Jumper was first released. Etching my own board back then was fun and it took a few tries to find get it correctly etched.  I would guess some may not want to try to etch a board.

I'm not so interested in the tube type kits.
I still remember helping my high school buddy trouble shoot his HW-101 and getting knocked across the room from the HV in the plate circuit.
I worked on many other high voltage circuits in the coming years (Ham and Medical X-Ray systems,) but I really loved the onset of solid state devices and the ability to trouble shoot some circuits with finger capacitance on a circuit board (without seeing stars.)
I'm not sure I'd trust myself to keep safe around HV these days.
I've certainly not built every kit from 4SQRP, but I'll skip the tube offerings.
Happy New Year, Y'all.
