Hi Phillip,

The little TA642 AM receiver IC chip is designed to run with a very low voltage supply - for battery operated gear. It can run on just a single AA battery.
The red LED has a forward voltage drop generally from about 1.6 to 1.8 V when it's illuminated, so it maintains a steady voltage to supply the TA642.

You could do the same thing with two or three conventional silicon diodes in series, or with a 2V zener, if you could find one.
But in the QRP tradition of doing more with less, we get the required voltage regulation.... and the light we get for free!

I got a couple of the small wooden boxes at Hobby Lobby here in Lincoln for the Crystal Spotter kit.  The correct actual number on it is 299743S.  The kit fits exactly inside.

AM Murania Radio Receiver Question

Philip Karras <ke3fl@...>

From pg 5 of the muraniamanual.pdf:

Power and Voltage Regulator
The Murania circuit uses a red LED as a voltage regulator for the receiver. The LED also serves as both a power-on lamp and a tuning indicator. This circuit will be installed and checked for proper operation before continuing.

Can someone explain what voltage is this LED regulating? For what purpose?

Hi Dan,

$20 sent to my Newest, Bestest Friend for Life!  Your mileage may vary, of course ...  😀

I love that animated GIF and found it at
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~rtoyama/73flash.html, in case anyone thinks I had anything to do with it.  My BS is in engineering and MS is in computer science, and my thesis is in 3-D graphics for modeling and simulation, so computer graphics stuff is deep in my wheelhouse and areas of interest.

Thanks for helping me acquire the boards and

FISTS Sprint - Saturday 06FEB21

Jody - K3JZD

The first FISTS Sprint with the new 2 hour duration will be held this Saturday.  New rules and new times.   See  https://fistsna.org/operating.html#sprints

FISTS no longer collects dues.  It maybe be too late to get a new FISTS Number before this Saturday’s event.   But, if you have a FISTS Number from days gone by, it is still a valid number.

Fortunately Hobby Lobby also sent an email letting me know they were available again on the day they arrived. hi hi

Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for that report and photo, Josh.
Nice looking build, and I see you added the socket pins.

Was that box the #288743S called out in the manual, that we're all thinking is unobtanium?
Or is it another box that fits the board?
If it's a different one, please pass along the stock number.

Just thought I'd share that the kit new Crystal Spotter kit arrived in good shape!  Was a real quick assembly, with well put together documentation!   It's an ideal first Pittsburgh style board, if you've never done one.  Managed to pick up a matching box at the local Hobby Lobby, too!  Thanks for the great kits and the quick response to interest in this project!

Hi Larry,

Best to concentrate the discussions over there. It'll make for quicker help and more Jumper builders are likely to see any posts....

Short answer: That apparently low Q2 Drain voltage is not an issue.
I just checked my 100% working beta build unit and the Q2 drain varies from 5.15 V to 5.64 V as the regen control is swept over its range.

I'll comment more over on the Bayou Jumper group.
