Second Sunday Sprint results

John Lonigro

OOPS!!!  I was busy yesterday shoveling snow and didn't get around to tabulating the results of the SSS, until now.  Upon looking at the results for February, perhaps a lot of people were busy on Sunday evening and didn't get around to participating this month.  I know the weather wasn't the greatest.  There was a total of 7 entries.  The winner this month is Carl, WB0CFF, with 14 QSO points. Congratulations to Carl.  He will receive his certificate shortly. After only two months in the annual contest, Carl is in the lead with 39 points to K4BAI's 28.

For a moment, I thought we had a new participant, George, NN3U.  I looked him up in the 4SQRP member list and didn't find him.  I was all ready to tell George he has to be a member of 4SQRP to have his score tabulated.  Fortunately, I also looked him up in QRZ and found out NN3U is George's new call.  His old call is K3EMS, so he is a member after all.  Nice short call, George!  I'm glad that note showed up in QRZ.  In the future, if you change your callsign, you should let me know in the soapbox section when reporting your score.  Otherwise I might tabulate things wrong.

Good afternoon
Do your self a favor, start simple.
Try a Sscpo practice oscillator for soldering practice, then move up to say a Ozark patrol or a Cricket?

The Hilltopper is a nice transceiver but it’s not exactly for a beginner.
Ps
I would have replied with you name, but I didn’t see it in the email?

Good luck,

Re: Bayou Jumper/Paraset Info in CQ Mag. Feb. 2021

Dick,

There's a lot of good reading listed below

To be added are two books about Nancy Wake, an Australian, Nancy Wake, World War Two's Most Rebellious Spy; and  Nancy Wake.  Also, Madame Fourcade's Secret War, by a well-known and gifted historical writer, Lynne Olson.

In Howard Blum's The Last Goodnight a society lady from Washington, D.C. uses pillow talk from many bedrooms to feed amazing stuff from various countries back to MI6 and the OSS, and much later once sips martinis during a one-on-one with FDR.

Don't miss Bem Macintyre's A Spy among Friends.  Imagine if you will, that a friend you haven't seen for a while telephones you on a Friday.  You invite him to dinner.  He spends that night, and then the whole weekend, during which he empties your liquor cabinet.  A few days later he beds your wife.  A month or so later she files to divorce you and marries him.  That is Englishman Kim Philby, the most prominent spy working for the USSR during the second World.War, now buried as a Soviet hero in Moscow. I've read several books about Philby, including his own biography, but this one is the most engaging.

The stories of the courageous people of the resistance in Italy, France and Norway are good reads to help us to see the courage and character of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.  It gives me the encouragement to do the good that I ought to do.
The Bayou Jumper raised my interest in the Paraset radio and the subsequent research led me to these books on the resistance fighters who relied on thes radios.  When we read about what a truly powerful and liberated woman can actually do in difficult situations, we knew that we wanted to build a library about these courageous women for our granddaughter.  We would like her to see what it means to be a liberated woman of character.
The fact that they used the low power Paraset radio is for Grandpa to enjoy.

Assignment: Spy Oluf Reed Olsen, Norwegian resistance.

I wonder how much impact these books would have on the young women of today.

I have toyed with the idea of getting the large box and gluing in some dividers to make a spot for the BJ, but also other areas for crystals, cables and maybe a keyer.    If I do it now, I would be to include a place for a frequency counter (with a switch between the BJ and the spotter), tuner and if there is still any room, probably some cables.

I got the idea from one of the BJ builders, but would modify to fit my needs.

Never mind. I did those mods the way I thought was correct & they work fine. Next I want to add a 9V regulator for 11 - 14 V input, then I'll box it up and be done & enjoy using it.

It already gets more stations and cover pretty much the entire AM band - as far as I can tell. I have stations at both ends & many in between.

More Good Murania News

Philip Karras <ke3fl@...>

I don't know why this is working but here's what I did for my first mod:
I added a short piece of wire, 2", from the end of the antenna out. This is so I can add a screw to the top of the case for a long wire addition if wanted.

I added enough loops to the loopstick antenna to get it to 61. I then had to back track as those pushed the tuning dial way past where I wanted it to go. WBAL at 1090 was now tuning in on the dial, was 7 - 9, at 17.

At this point I removed about 10 loops to make it only ~ 51 loops and that moved 1090 down to ~ 14. To make a long story short I kept removing loops until there was only one extra loop and now 1090 is right around 11. I felt that was good enough.

So, I added 2" of wire to the far, left side, end solder pad going straight up to the top of the case, this will change as I build the case. I flipped the loopstick so I could add wire on the side going towards the tuner but only ended up adding only one loop. My tickler loop is still flat against the board.

I'll now proceed to some of the other mods.

I recall being way below the lower edge, this is all about being able to cover 120 kHz or so of the band. If you are way below, you have some turns to remove. Also if you are from the original batch Terry introduced a change to the pto design to improve stability, an appropriate value poly capacitor. Its a cool rig enjoy your tweaking.
