FOXHUNT - 20M Summer Season opener

Dale Putnam

07/11/2013 1 K4FB Paul FL 2 N9NE Todd WI

Here are the first two FOXii up for skinning... in the Summer Season of FOXHUNTs
This very next Thursday (local),  starting promptly at 0100z (Fri - GMT) or 7 pm MDT, +/- 10KHz from 14.060,
these two skilled, sly, swift foxii, will be emerging from their dens, and it will be up to you to find and grab
a pelt (qso) from each of them. There will be only two, and the following week a different two, continueing for
the entire summer season. 10 weeks, each Thursday. So dust off that qrp gear, oil up them keys, and lets get to it.
Take a look to the sky, to the last thing your shot will touch, until it smacks a FOXii, hopefully deadon. We have only
FIVE DAYS LEFT....
Whew, it has been a long dry summer, my FOX withdrawl was getting unmanageable... how about you?
See you in the pack of hounds... and good luck to all and to all a good hunt.

Have a great season,

Re: Wed Nit CW Nets

It looks as if I was the DX-mostest with my 40 m QNI, made difficult by the heavy SSB QRM plus a goodly dose of QRN.  Still, it should be stressed that in NJ I have about an hour's worth of darkness working in my favor compared to most of you.

For the first time in a long while  I was able to hear bits and pieces of the beginning of the 80m net, but with insufficient readability to warrant a QNI attempt.

Interestingly, 80m was in great shape on Tuesday night with the weekly Michigan QRP Net (9:00 ET on 3.535 mHz) recording seven QNIs, including mine.  All but one sig were R5 here.

RMRC - 2 July

Dale Putnam

We had a fun net with W3HZZ - Phil checking in twice with two different rigs.. but the QSB attacked both times... go figure. KE6OIO - is doing well with the garden, but doesn't care for the radishes so much, and that seems to be the only thing that grows in mine.  Go figure.
KF5JK - John from Beaumont, Tx, checked in, after trying other NAQCC nets, he found this one, and we're glad he found us. But the QSB was indiscriminent, and attacked him too. Go Figure.
With W3HZZ, KE6OIO, and KF5JK on Tuesday, we will be looking for more folks tomorrow.
Yes, even tho it is the 4th, and I may be BBQing... well.. I may be attending to the ribs that are BBQing... we will have a net... I'm pretty sure my fingers won't be so slick from the ribs to cause problems... that won't be my excuse this time.  I've already used the rf in the shack excuse...
I guess I'll just have to go figure something else.
Maybe a different time of day would be helpful in combatting the QSB....
I'm open to suggestions, and will certainly take them all into consideration.
Time and Day????

We will meet tomorrow, the 4th.. on 14.0625 look up if busy, at 2045z or 2:45pm MDT.

C U then,  And Have a Happy and Safe Fourth.. remember what it is a holiday for!!

Have a great day,

QRP Field Day

random.path

I spent about 6 hours in the field near Tulsa with the KX3 feeding a jumper dipole and logging 24 contacts in 18 sections. Sat in my wife's "Soccer Mom" folding chair with the KX3 in my lap, using the attached paddle - back to the wind, which was substantial but kept me from getting too hot. I logged using the HamLog Ipad app with the field day template.

Seemed that about 35-40% of stations I heard were able to hear me - not bad running 5 watts with things as busy as they were. Most contacts were on 20m, the rest on 15m.

Re: Portable Antenna Survey

random.path

I've settled on using an AlexLoop for SOTA and many other portable ops. Although it is expensive, it is lightweight and quick to setup (< 5 minutes) and has performed very well in my experience, even on 40m where its efficiency is lowest.

For Field Day type ops, I have a jumper dipole for 40m thru 10m. This too works well, though band changes are not as quick and it is more time to set up than the AlexLoop and needs trees and/or a center support pole.

I also have an EndFedz 20m antenna which has been a most impressive performer thrown up into a tree.

Then there is the 25 ft. random wire pulled up into a tree, with a 16 ft counterpoise on the ground. This works well with a wide range antenna tuner in the mix.

So many things seem to work well, its fun to try them all.

To: 4sqrp@..., Cyclone40@...

First, some history....about 30 years ago, I tried to "home-brew" a 40
meter transmitter from an article in the old "73" magazine. It was
described as a simple, "can't miss" home-brew project for the new
home-brewer. Total, complete, absolute disaster. I have 10 left thumbs
when it comes to using a soldering iron. The thing ended up in a
landfill somewhere. So I hung up my soldering iron for good and went on
to other ham radio niches--including a few years in the late 1990's
using QRP.

Fast forward to 2013--I decided to pursue 40M CW WAS. By chance one day
in early March, I landed on 7030.7 and had a very enjoyable QSO with
Terry WA0ITP on his PigRig. He introduced me to the 4sqrp group and the
Flying Pigs and I soon joined both groups. I dug out my old TenTec Argo
556 from it's hiding place in the garage, found a 3 amp power supply and
got it back on the air.

The introduction of the Cyclone 40 really caught my eye and I just had
to have one! However, the memory of my earlier disaster remained vivid
and another complication was involved. In August of last year, I was
diagnosed with lymphoma and had 4 months of chemotherapy (I'm in
remission, thankfully). One of the drugs in my "cocktail" causes nerve
damage....and whatever manual dexterity I had was gone. Any attempt at
constructing the Cyclone 40 was out of the question.

Out of the blue, I saw an email from Ed, WG5F (here in Tulsa of all
places!!!) offering to build a Cyclone 40. I quickly sent off an email
asking him if he would build one for me. He agreed, I ordered the
Cyclone 40 kit, got ol' #52 to him earlier in June and tonite had a QSO
with my very own Cyclone 40. What a pleasure---she sounds so good on the
air.

So, with apologies to the email police for using all caps: A BIG, VERY
PUBLIC, THANK YOU TO ED MEYERS, WG5F, FOR BUILDING OL' #52 CYCLONE 40
FOR ME!!!!! I'll soon have 'er sitting on my desk, looking for QSOs.

Bruce AA5CO
