work. As a remote employee, we do daily hangouts to colloborate

If you have a webcam and a microphone on your computer all you have to do is add members to your circles on G+ and when one of those members is online the same time as your are you can choose to start a hangout with each other and have as many as ten people in each video chat at a time. It's like Go to Meeting only free. Bobby

Yup, I'm using one. It's straightforward except for one glitch. The MIC/PTT jack is wired backwards for the KX3 so you can't use a commercially wired stereo cable between the 4SLink and the KX3. In the 4SLink, on that jack, audio is on the ring and PTT is on the tip. I don't know why it was designed that way as most rigs use the convention of microphone audio on the tip and PTT on the ring with, of course, ground being on the shell.
You have 2 choices, you can either make up a cable with the radio end having audio on the tip and PTT on the ring or you can do as I did and modify the 4SLink. I cut the traces going to tip and ring on the MIC/PTT Jack and using some 22 gauge wire, re-wired the jack so that audio now appears on the tip contact and PTT appears on the ring contact. Now, I can use the Elecraft cable kit option and the 4SLink really works great between my laptop and the KX3.
If you go the modified cable route, be sure and mark that cable so you don't accidentally get it mixed up with a normal one. Having the tip and ring interchanged between ends might create a problem in some other situation.

Indeed, WA3OPY, Darell Brehm, and AC6UR, Ron Hall my buddies at International Crystal Manufacturing and W1REX (me) gave a crystal grinding workshop some years back at Ozarkcon when it was held in Joplin Mo. I designed a pretty nifty rig for measuring the crystal frequency between grinding steps and put together the materials for the workshop. The hardest thing was finding enough out of band crystals in a frequency range close enough to grind into a useful QRP frequency. I bought hundreds of FT243 crystals in order to get enough 6975Khz crystals for the workshop. I modified a standard crystal testing circuit to test the blanks outside the FT243 holder with enough 'anticipation precision' so that when they were re-installed into the FT243 holders, you got what you wanted! A good time was had by all and (almost?) everybody went home with a FT243-7030 hand made crystal! The crystal (under construction) tester was the basis of my Build-Along presentation at FDIM a couple of years ago and still appears on my QRPme kits roster as I still have a few left. I did contract a local commercial glass shop to make me DOZENS of 6"x6" plate glass grinding platforms.....and we did use Bon Ami a very fine grit cleaning compound (like Comet) that the old timers used and you can still buy in your local supermarket. I do have a small supply of cut & beveled edge grinding plates left which I will part with for $10 each... For this years FDIM Buildathon, I presented the Beaconator which was a simple 30m beacon transmitter that could also be used as a straight transmitter. I used a Picokeyer chip from Ham Gadgets to enable both options. I wanted each beacon owner to have a unique frequency but didn't have the time to have everyone grind a crystal....so I took the other old-timer's approach. I had a batch of HC-49 30m crystals made at the QRP area but had the crystalls delivered in UNSOLDERED HC-49 cases . So the builders simply removed the rubber band and 'penned' the crystals down in frequency using a pencil. I have leftover Beaconator kits and cheap deals on just the board & crystal on my QRPme website too! So if you are looking to have some fun playing around with beacon transmitters and messing with the internals of quartz crystals, I have some fun kits you might be interested in..... Rex W1REX

The hangout idea sounds good to me . Basically I am an old analog guy , plus an old time glowbug guy . However I do as much building and experimenting as I can find time for and still make a few contacts . I try very hard to make a few contacts every day now . No one specific mode or specific band . In fact I have spent so much time designing and building various projects over the past 5 or 6 years , I actually did very little actual on the air operating . I do run beacons both part 15 and ham band , plus MEPT's for QRSS and WSPR . When I looked at how empty the log was for making two way contacts I decided that it was once again time for me to once again become involved in on the air operation . I have been a ham for 48 years this year , after being licensed when I was age 12. Never in all that time did I chase ANY pieces of paper or certificates of any kind . So I set up LOTW and bought another logging program and started with number zero , with my intent now to collect all of the paper possible on any band in any mode from 160 meters through 432 MHz. including 222 MHz. I am having an absolute ball now !! Still have a LOT of pending antenna projects since my "main" station antenna right now is a G5RV up 30 feet . I am even using it on 6 meters and worked 4 "new" states with it this morning on 6 , under my rebirth :) Always interested in learning more and would love to learn more about some of the design software from some of the younger people out there . IF you hear me on , it is VERY likely that I need your state , county , or grid now on some mode on some band(s). 73, Charlie , W5COV

About a month ago I added a bunch of 4State members to my QRP Radio circle. I am wondering how many of us Google+ members use Hangouts? We could start having a weekend project show and tell or use hangouts for teaching each other how to learn and use things such as LT Spice or antenna modeling software just to mention a few. Let me know what you all think about this and any other ways the group members could benefit from Hangouts.

Six meters is wide open here , both short and long . A good day for a "wet noodle" antenna . Some hard to get grids and states very loud and active right now . Put whatever you have on 6 , tune around a little and HAVE A GREAT TIME !!

13 Colonies QRP style

The 4th of July weekend 13 Colonies sure is a fun event! After being off the air for a month while I relocated my shack, I hooked up my inverted vee Saturday morning and discovered that the 13 Colonies event was going on.
I managed to work all 13 plus the bonus station relatively easy by the afternoon with my Softrock SDR/Mobo 4.3 to a 50w amp so I decided to try it QRP - without the 50w amp. Thank goodness I managed to work 11 of the colony stations prior to the solar flare on Sunday! It took me most of the day to work the last two for a QRP clean sweep. BTW - if you ask, in the past the event coordinator will put a QRP sticker on your 13 Colonies certificate. 72 Fred WA8PGE

Thanks to all who replied to the Survey. I got some great ideas. Looking forward to trying some of your Antennas soon. I am expiermenting with a 9:1 unun and 60 foot wire now (no counterpoise) and 25 feet of coax. I have read (On the Web) Pros and cons, some like it others call it a dummy load. Another was the 24 ga Speaker wire dipole. 22 feet each leg And 28 foot feed line. I put a 1:1 balun at the feed point and then 25 foot of coax. Thanks again to all Joe KF0XV
