Ron,

Here’s a link to Building one, looks like it might be fun with the grandkids, good way to teach using tools and much more.  All 17 of mine are beyond that age now.

Today’s version is the Cricket-Key.  I built one to go with my 3 Crickets.

I remember the sets and may have had one. You connected them together with a pair of wires and could communicate back and forth.
I checked eBay under Kids telegraph sets and came up with a bunch of them. It was a trip down memory lane.
Thanks for the memories so to speak.

Kid's Telegraph Sounder Kit

AG1P Ron

Earlier today I was reminiscing with a brother about past Christmas presents.  In talking with him, I remembered getting a wood telegraph sounder kit in the late 1950s when I was in 7th or 8th grade.  Besides listening to my dad’s transoceanic at night, it was one of the few things that ended up getting me interested in the hobby.  I looked around on the internet but couldn’t find one.

Does anyone on the reflector remember this kit and if so, who sold it?

I resoldered the crystal directly and not hearing it on a local rig. Also tried an SDR, and still nothing.

If coupling between the PC etched coils figures in / is at the root of the problem, then I would redo the output and configure the PA using this page's Class E circuit calculator to supply new values for the LC components in the PA circuit.

See link below that is a URL from WA0ITP:

I have used it before and it's excellent.

  • If I were to do so, I would probably isolate the 2N700 oscillator's source connection from the PA via a 100 pf capacitor and install a 1N4148 diode in parallel with the PA's gate.  That means that the gate connection of the PA would have one end of the 100 pf capacitor mentioned above and the 1N4148 diode connected there.  Might also be a good idea to install a small ferrite in series with the 100 pf capacitor before connecting it to the gate to prevent unwanted oscillations, spurs, etc.

I know that this would be a radical departure from the original but it might be the easiest solution since trying to figure it out otherwise could end up being very frustrating and possibly fruitless.

A while back I undertook the same project, to use as a test platform for the Bayou Jumper, whose Tx is the same circuit. Never got it to work either. I had some chats with NM0S, the designer, and we surmised there is something magical going on with the PCB inductors that toroids just won't duplicate.

Please keep us posted if you succeed in getting it going, as that would be a step along the path of putting the BJ on other bands.

After checking the crystal connection (as mentioned in the previous email) can you confirm if the oscillator is working?

Can you hear the oscillator working in a nearby receiver when you key the transmitter?

The very first thing I'd check is to make sure there's a good connection
on the crystal.  No crystal = no oscillation.

Needed assistance for NS-40?

Jason - WV3V - Las Vegas, NV.

Howdy Gang,

I recently put together the NS-40 from the simple schematic online and am having a bit of trouble getting the little rig to transmit properly. I would my own coils (I have an L/C meter), and used manhattan style design.  I'm at a lost as to why it's not transmitting.
I did have a misplaced cap and fixed that. I also replaced both transistors, and some of the other caps to higher voltage ones. I removed one of the coils, and believe that I have everything else connected properly. I am not sure where else to look for issues.

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

Re: 40 AND 80 meter Net report

Well,
Deep slow QSB on both bands tonight. At 0200Z on 40 meters you started at 579 and eventually dropped below the noise. Finally you came up somewhat and I was able to QNI. At 0230Z on 80 meters you started about 559 but dropped below the noise just after I QNI. The second time you heard me on 80, Johnny, I had switched from my OCF dipole to my Butternut HF-6V vertical.
By the way my answer to the “key” question should have been model ZN-QRP iambic paddle by N3ZN. For a picture go to  www.n3znkeys.com and type my call sign in the search box at the top of the page.

Johnny,

I heard you a bit on 40m but only pieces, sometimes a CQ or QNI and parts of Calls.

I have made some additional changes so 80 is working pretty good based on WSPR.  Attached is my 80m reception (some at 200mw) about the time of the Net.

I am puzzled as I uses to check in regularly when Bill, KV6Z ran the Net, perhaps his antenna was aimed my way ?

Anyway, that was me with the QRM !
