I hear that a lot too. Usually not S9
here, so you must be much closer. I think it's a digital signal,
not a carrier. But it sure picked an unfortunate spot to park
full time. OK, there it is. About S4 right now in Russellville, AR. 73, Nick, WA5BDU

the only problem i see is 7040 always has this s9 carrier even in day time with me.. or if it stops it begins or someone keeps tuning undecided whats up with that.. parts of the day i can use it.. used to use it all the time 30 years ago.

Jim,
Sounds like you have been having fun building 4sqrp kits. To answer your NS-40 questions. Yes, 9 watts out is pretty standard. If you want to stay with the 5 watts or less for qrp you can lower the voltage until you get to those lower output limits and it will also put less load on your output transistor. Yes going to 7.040 is perfectly acceptable. Don't want to hurt kit sales but you could just swap out the xtals when you were wanting to go to 7.040 or rig a dual xtal setup as many have done. Good luck with setting up the cables and getting on the air with your setup!! cu es 72, Bart W0IIT Pittsburg, KS

Early NS-40s' developed quite a bit of power, some even up to 12 Watts!! However in a high swr situation they won't live long at that level. They'll get real hot - real fast. Are you running all three kits from a 13.8 volt supply? If so I'd advise reducing that to 12 volts, If not then reduce the voltage to the NS-40. Maybe a dropping resistor of about 5 ohms and a 3-5 W rating between it and the power supply. Dave may jump in here also, he's the authority. The NS-40 will work across the entire 40M CW Band. A number of them have been used at 7122. Good luck and enjoy the Four State Trio on the air. ---------------------------------- I love this radio stuff ! 72 WAITP www.wa0itp.com www.4sqrp.com www.qrpspots.com

As luck would have it, I got a call from DirecTV this evening. As a good and loyal customer they are going to give me $500 worth of equipment including a Genie and a Mini-Genie and something akin to the Apple box that will allow me to see about 78 skazillion movies. All for free, except for an additional $3 per month and a 24 month guaranteed contract. They will install tomorrow morning. Will let you know how it goes. Dad

Not used a lot these days but QSP? means "Will you realy to ____" andHi, Once upon a time I worked some of the CW traffic nets. I had a table of Q signals in front of me but over time, as I came in contact with those signals I didn't have to look at the table any more. People checking into this informal "ragchew" net won't have traffic but they won't to send QRU. They ARE QRU if they list no traffic - QTC - which newer hams also will not have to look up. Nobody should be listing traffic. Only a small handfull of Q signals will be useful for the informal net. Now that I'm retired I'm working to increase my CW proficiency and rejoin those nets. By the way, I worked those nets and the Navy-Marine Corps MARS nets QRP (2 watts) unless conditions demanded my full 90 watts. 73, Bill KU8H

Not used a lot these days but QSP? means "Will you realy to ____" and QSP means "I will relay to ____".
Might be applicable to say PSE QSP to try to get someone to relay you to the NCS if he's unable to copy. Probably would sent most to their Handbook or Google to see what QSP means though ... 72- Nick, WA5BDU

Yep. there is a Q signal for pse relay... but this net is a casual net, and isn't supposed to use any Q signals except the QNI to check in. However... if someone wants to check in... and uses Q signals to get it done.. that's ok too... The problem may be, that the strong station may be an experienced op or may not be... and if he doesn't have the Q signal info... it is a cause for frustration. If you check in through a relay Jim what would you do.. if you don't hear NCS.. .and don't recognize any of the calls other than identifying the two you hear.. as being new ops?
