When I first learned CW back in 1963 I was fortunate to have an uncle who had served as a radioman during WWII.  Man he was strict but he DID teach me CW.  He had me copying the 5 wpm code in my head which for those of us who are old enough to remember was what was required for the novice test back at that time.  When I took the general exam in downtown Los Angeles about six months later I had another old FCC navy guy as the examiner.  Man that guy never smiled as I can remember that day shaking in my little boots...............but I will tell you I have loved CW ever since learning it back then even though those guys were harda--.          jim   AC6OM/1

DO YOU COPY CODE AT 13 - 20 WPM .....BUT NOT AT 5 TO 10 OR 21-50?

Phil Anderson

HI Guys,

If the answer to the subject question is yes - or maybe - then you simply have not studied at enough
different speeds. While we say that Morse Code is a language, perhaps the real answer is that it is "many"
languages, one at 5-10, one at 10-15, and at 15-20, etc.

My guess as to why this seems to be the case is due to our limited short term memory. When the code
is very slow, we don't hear words at all, just charcters.....so our table lookup memory handles the characters
AOK but doesn't have enough sort term storage to put together the characters into words and then group the
words conveying the real message. However, if we speed up the WPM or use mostly just Q signals and a
standard message format, then our mind hears QTH as "my location is" and there is still enough short term
memory left to save the following city and state names or anticipate that.

I'm up to about 50 words I recognize at 40 to 50 WPM by their unique sounds. I'm working on the second 50 so
I can be proficient with 100 words at 50 WPM. Gotta practice 20 to 30 minutes per day, over and over.

A crystal radio friend of mine, Jerry O"Neill, sent me an exercise listed below that bolsters my "theory" written out above.
It proves to me that one need not hear all of the letters in a spurt of a few words in order to perfectly understand the
message. Give the exercise a try. I was able to do it if I read it fast but not if I read it slow.. Sounds like the "Morse
Problem" right?

Have Fun!, 72, Uncle Phil, W0XI

Here's a Doctor Dementia exercise to test your skills....

I've seen this with the letters out of order, but this is the first time I've seen it with numbers. Good example
of a Brain Study: If you can read this
OUT LOUD, you have a strong mind. And better than that: Alzheimer's
is a long long, way down the road before it ever gets anywhere near you.

My 160m inverted L antenna was felled by Hurricane Sandy.  I got a slightly smaller replacement up in time for the annual QRP ARCI 160m sprint, held Thanksgiving eve.  Wanting a better idea of its efficacy, I entered the recent ARRL 160m contest, but limited my participation to mainly seeking sections.  I would listen to a QSO to learn a station's section, and occasionally I'd look a station up on QRZ.  My 71 QSOs netted 40 ARRL/RAC sections.

In December 2010 conditions were far better and with the same technique 110 QSOs achieved 56 ARRL/RAC sections, in which there were 43 states.

On both occasions my objective was to evaluate my equipment.  Frankly robotic contests such as this ARRL affair are extremely boring, and I vastly prefer the comparatively saner QRP sprints.

With this in mind please note that NAQCC's monthly sprint (80, 40 and 20 meters) is this evening, from 0130Z-0330Z.

Hello there,

The registration for rooms at the Holiday Inn where those who will be attending the Four Days in May (FDIM) can benefit from a discounted price of $112 per night was opened this morning.

Details on FDIM are viewable at: http://www.qrparci.org/fdim.

You need to call the hotel at 937-431-4613, and identify yourself as a FDIM participant to get the discounted rate.  (FYI, the room rates for non-FDIM participants are $125 for 14 May and $15 for 15-17 May).

Having been slow last year, I stayed at a less desirable location.  I'm now confirmed for 14 through 17 May 2014 at the HI.  I'd suggest that you don't delay.

Cheers,

Chas.
