Re: Frequency adjustment on a simple cw transmitter

James Compton

Chuck,
Thanks!  That's exactly the information I needed.  I ordered some of the polivaricon capacitor kits from Rex Harper at qrpme.com about a month ago, but he's been busy assembling kits for the Rockmite II and fighting snow on his farm near Limerick, ME so has been a little slow filling orders.
I was certain someone in 4SQRP would know the answer to this question, since your net is on 7122 and getting the frequency nailed with homebrew rigs and purchased kits has to take some tweaking.
Thanks, again and Merry Christmas!

Jim,

The lower frequency is typical of the Rock-mights too.

In most circuits with parallel resonant crystals, a series
capacitor/trimmer will raise the frequency. An inductor in series
will lower the frequency.

Series resonant crystals such as the 7114s from ESS will be higher
than the marked frequecy.

A combination of trimmer and inductor in series can be arranged to
both raise and lower the frqeuency.

There are examples of such circuits in the W1FB's QRP Notebooks and in EMRFD.

Frequency adjustment on a simple cw transmitter

James Compton

I have recently built several QRP cw transmitters, all based on Lew Smith's Simple 17  meter QRP Transmitter design, but in different bands.  Without exception, the transmitting frequency of all of them has been between 1 - 2 kHz below the crystal frequency.  Adding a capacitor to the circuit, either in series or parallel with the crystal will supposedly change the frequency, as will a trimmer/variable capacitor (as in Simple Simon VXO) but I don't know if it be changed either up or down.

My latest build for 15 meters uses a 21.060 crystal and the output frequency of the transmitter is 21.048.  I can and will experiment with capacitors, but it would help knowing where to start.

My question: does anyone know where in the circuit to add capacitance to raise the final frequency? .....or lower it for that matter. Or is there an alternative method, such as changing the two filter coils?  Adding a capacitor would be simpler, if that would work.

If you happen to get sight of a copy of the late great Gilbert Davey's book "Fun With Shortwave Radio" the one with a picture of the London Science Museum's Ham Radio room - GB2SM, you'll see, built in to the left side, yes I said "built in" you'll see a Creed 7B. In the UK this was the machine much sought after by Ham operators wanting to play RTTY (an/or secure a "Quickie" divorce!!). I my time as a demonstrator of GB2SM it was, sadly, long gone.

Re: RTTY in days of old

Hardly the romance associated with older TTY equipment, but the
Dataspeed 40 terminals and printers haunted my territory in Oklahoma for
18 months after I started with Union Pacific RR in 1991:

http://www.nadcomm.com/40dataspeed.htm

I didn't find a video of the printer, but those guys had an endless belt
with at least two sets of fonts. They ran rather quickly as I recall.
They were heavy enough that one could have easily chocked a train with
one in a pinch! The terminals were close to indestructable as well.

20's really long too.  Just worked 9V1YC in Singapore - long path with the KX3 on 14.027. He was calling NA Long Path and working split - UP 2.  I managed to get him just before he went QRT.  Clean signal with very low background noise.  Funny because I think there's about an 8th inch of ice on my antenna as we've been having freezing drizzle to light freezing rain all day!  Hope it changes over to snow before too long or I might lose my wire antennas!
