We had 8" overnight in Fenton, MI. Just got in from plowing that out of the driveway to make room for the 12" that is supposed to arrive over the next 24 hours. Ugh!!! Running out of room already to put all of that white water. :-)

72 and play radio today,

No snow here yet, temperature just passed 43 degrees Celcius (+\~ 112 F). I usually put on my woolies when the temp drops below 30 C!

Re: Digikey Schematic Drawing Program

Chuck Carpenter

Rick,

I used Far a few years ago. At that time he did the process photographically (still does except for ExpressPCB) . I would submitt my negative artwork for the PCBs. The board quality was good and prices were good too.

The one problem I see with Far and double sided boards is no plated through holes. Not a problem unless the PCB design has many pads and vias that need to be plated through. Otherwise you'd have to make sure connections were soldered top and bottom for pads and add wire inserts for the vias. Surface mount PCBs should be OK if there are only a few wire connections on single side board.

I believe he may have about the best pricing for boards.

I know this is an old thread, but Chuck thanks for this information. Futurlec's pricing is very good.

We had a couple projects at work some time ago where I used ExpressPCB to make some boards. I was very happy with the boards, but they are kind of pricey (easy to get over $100 on a small order).

And if you design the board with ExpressPCB software, you can then
use the files with Futurlec and get even a single board made for less money.

I try to label the PCBs with enough text info etched on the top layer
so you can skip the silk screen and solder mask and still know where
everythng goes.

Futurlec's PCB operation will let you use pretty much any software
design program you might be using.

Just learned about Futurlec this morning... 8-)

Re: Warbler on the way

Rick Bennett

A thought I have is if you want to go for the "built in" look is to get a small converter board and install it in the rig itself. Here are a couple options that indicate they are FTDI:

I don't know anything about these particular products, more research might be required (or at these prices just buy-it-and-try-it).

It would be nice to just plug a standard USB cable right into the radio.

Definitely what Wayne said. Make sure you DO NOT get one with the Prolific chip set, especially one made in China. The Chinese illegally copied Prolific's chips and driver software. Prolific changed their software so it would not work with the Chinese copies.

The FTDI chipset for the USB to RS-232 converters works perfectly. Be sure to load the drivers on the computer though prior to plugging the USB cable in for the first time or the drivers will have to be "uninstalled" and reinstalled before it will work. (Don't ask me how I know this -- when in doubt, read the book first!).
