Re: CW Tone Preference

Dale Putnam

Hi Bill,
My preference will vary some, depending on what is being done... deep into the qrm/qrn.. whle hunting dx, I like a lower tone near 500... for general nets or rag chewing,
the tone may be more acceptable near 600...  unless I am the dx station.. then many times I'll open the rx so I will answer calls up to 1200 or below 300...

CLUB NIGHT and HOMEBREW competition at FDIM 2014

Jim Stafford W4QO

First, what is FDIM?  See  http://www.qrparci.org/fdim

Have you registered for the THU and SAT FDIM events?
https://fdim.eventwax.com/fdim-2014/register
You may register via PayPal or credit card.  The Thursday seminar day is
$40 and the Saturday banquet is $35.  Those who order their tickets via
the internet for the seminar will be eligible advanced reservation prizes.

There is even the annual BUILD-A-THON which takes a different
slant this year:  http://qrpme.com/?p=product&id=FB3

And now, it's time for QRP clubs around the world to sign up for this
year's CLUB NIGHT at FDIM 2014

As in 2013, Friday Night is designated CLUB NIGHT which includes:
Club Tables, the Homebrew Competition and SHOW & TELL.  Friday
night is FREE!  There is no vendor selling on Friday night (that's Thursday
night) but clubs from all over the world are encouraged to reserve a
table and promote their club, perhaps even having some munchies to
hand out to attendees.  They also are encouraged to put on a display
of "non-judged" SHOW and TELL items on their table for others to peruse.
Clubs may also sell items on their table that they "produce" which are the direct
products of their club.  For example, the NoGA QRP club will have a supply
of their wooden KX3 stands for sale.  See the FDIM page (web link above)
for more info.

Here is the list of clubs that participated in 2013:
  • 4 States QRP
  • NoGA QRP
  • GQRP
  • RU QRP (Russia)
  • Kickapoo QRP
  • Eastern Central Indiana QRP
  • Flying Pigs QRP
  • QRP ARCI
  • CRES-ARC QRP (Columbus)
  • Space Coast QRP
  • Knightlights QRP
  • North AL QRP
  • Pacific Northwest QRP

But we can take many more.    Get your group together and reserve your table at
CLUB NIGHT. Just send an email to me w4qo@... and get on the list.

HOMEBREW COMPETITON/ SHOW and TELL - Club night also features
the HOMEBREW COMPETITION.  The categories are shown at :

http://www.qrparci.org/fdim/116-homebrew-contest-show-tell

In addition, this year we are featuring a SPECIAL CATEGORY: CRYSTAL SETS.
This can be a set you built just for this competition, one you built when you
were a kid - it just has to be something you built personally!  So bring out
those old crystal sets (or new ones) and enter them in this SPECIAL CATEGORY.

As to SHOW/TELL, we encourage every FDIM attendee to bring something to
show at Club Night. You do not have to be part of a club table to show an item.
These are items that are not judged as part of any competition.  This can
be just about anything related to QRP - something you built, something you
bought that might be of interest to others, your "go kit" or even a display of your shack,
antennas, a SOTA that you operated from, gadgets, achievement awards gained
from an indoor antenna, etc etc.  You can see this is really wide open.  It's to
make CLUB NIGHT something every ham at Dayton would want to attend.

So join us again at FDIM CLUB NIGHT on May 16 from 8 to 10 PM.
                            Did I mention ... it's FREE!

April Second Sunday Sprint (ASSS?)

John Lonigro

This coming Sunday is the 2nd Sunday of the month, which means it's time for the SECOND SUNDAY SPRINT (SSS). Ozarkcon may come and go, but SSS is two hours of solid fun every month, but only if lots of people participate.

Here are the details, which should be familiar to all by now:

Date/time: Sunday, 13 April, 2014, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm CDT (0000 - 0200Z Monday).
Bands: 160M through 10M, no WARC bands or 60M.
Frequencies: The usual QRP watering holes - don't forget 7122 kHz and 3564 kHz.
Power: 5 Watts maximum.
Mode: CW or sideband.
Exchange: RST, SPC, and member number (members) or RST, SPC, power (non-members).
Calling CQ: "CQ 4S" recommended.

Note: Contacts with the same station on different bands are allowed. In case there is any sideband activity, the sideband and CW portions of the same band count as two separate bands.

Reporting:
Add up your QSOs for each band/mode and send them to me. I'm requesting one additional piece of data: your QTH. It is interesting to see how widespread participation is in this sprint. Note: QTH (other than SPC) is not required for your exchange (not prohibited either). Just include YOUR QTH in your report.

With that in mind, a typical report would be:

Name: Fido
Call: K9MUT
QTH: Branson, MO
4SQRP number: 5280
Results:
40M CW: 2 QSOs
40M SSB: 1 QSO
80M CW: 1 QSO
80M SSB: 1 QSO
Total: 5 QSOs

You do not need to list the stations contacted. But if you make an exotic contact, you might as well brag about it in an optional bragging section at the bottom of your submittal. I'll include comments when I report the scores (no extra credit).

When you've totaled your score, please send it to: secondsundaysprint@.... Put "Sprint" in the subject line. Please avoid "replying" to one of my emails. The sprint results go to a separate mailbox. Send the results before Wednesday (between 9:00 Sunday night and midnight Tuesday night). I'll tally everything and publish them on this reflector as soon as possible, probably Wednesday morning. I suggest you send them in shortly after 9:00 pm Sunday so you don't forget. If you see a mistake or omission when I publish the results, let me know and I'll fix it.

Please keep this email until after you've submitted your score for Sunday. Remember, the person with the most SSS contacts between November, 2013 and September, 2014 will be allowed to use the club's callsign, WQ5RP, for the 4X4 sprint in October, 2014.

The SSS rules are posted on the 4SQRP website, under "4SQRP On Air Activities", just in case you deleted this email.

On a related topic, I'm starting to think about the rules for the October 4x4 sprint. I think the basic scoring will be very similar to these SSS events. Suggestions for bonus points would be appreciated, if you have any. Please reply to this email to send any suggestions my way. The goal is to have bonus points that make the contest interesting but don't tilt the scale so much that only someone who gets bonus points has a chance to win. Thanks in advance.

72 and good luck in the contest,

John AA0VE
SSS Coordinator
