Hi Guys,

Just worked the ARRL's W100AW event station on 30-meters, at 10.106.
It's a simple exchange of call and RST.

I managed to get to Dayton / FDIM for only the second time this year.  David not only scored with the HoF recognition and the homebrew contest, but also gave his talk on the POW receiver to an appreciative audience.

To all:

I'm home from Dayton, and catching up on emails, and I have to say I'm still overwhelmed by all this.  I'm very appreciative of this show of support, and very grateful for the honor.  The QRP community is the best part of Ham Radio, and 4QRP is a great group to be part of.

anybody else catch the dx to euro EA today?

Phil Anderson

Thought the bands were dead today at 2 PM so mowed the yard.
Came back in and noticed on www.dxmaps.com that 20/15/and 10
had some openings.

Got on 15m first and kept hearing CQ "EA" and call. Turned to the
WA7BNM contest site and found EA is a Spain "test," noting that
no-spain stations should send RST and a nr. That opened
the DX gate:  OH6DEO, EF0JC, HN7Q (IRAQ), EF8U, PY2YU,
SP9LJD, and more. What fun! Iraq was a new one for me.

Most of this is enabled by the many DX oriented sites on the web.

It got me thinking again about the talk at Ozarkcon on Reverse
Beacon Networks. Neat stuff.

I found, loaded and installed the fldigi no problem. I also got all the cords hooked between the computer. Should I be able to hear audio in an earphone at the out jack of the warbler? I don't.... I did find my instructions and will read and study them this weekend and see what direction to go. Heck I am not sure the audio in and out is set in the computer so I have some more looking and learning in Ubuntu. Back to the desk and get to reading. I had the pig on all evening but never heard any signals. I cqed a little but no takers.... Cu tomorrow.

Bill, thanks for the info.!  It is good to know, because there are a few Windows programs I would like to keep.

Yes I hope to use the old computer on the internet and I knew that was going to be the final death of XP.  I figured there would be a few linux folks around this group to help.  I am not in a hurry, I would rather be building radios than messing with computers, but sooner or later I will have to tackle that beast.

Hi Rick,

Coupla things...

You can run your XP machine forever with impunity as long as you don't
connect it to the internet. Use it just for your ham radio. The big
issue is going to be security vulnerabilities with exposure to the
internet.

If you do switch to Linux you may find that a lot of your MS Windows ham
software will run in WINE. Wine is the Linux support system for MS
Windows programs to run in Linux. It's not an emulator and some things
won't work well or even not at all. Don't try to run the Windows Office
Suite stuff under WINE. Or internet explorer (who would wanna run
that!). I have had most of the SDR and DSP software running in WINE.
Software for the digital modes, too. So if you have some favorites that
don't have a Linux version you might find that it will run just fine in
WINE. Spectran and Spectrum Lab are two that I like very well and have
no Linux versions. Both run perfectly in WINE. Just a couple of examples.

Bill KU8H
