Re: 40 M NET

Sam Neal

Hello,

Last net night I felt like Joe Bpsqkpt, the little cartoon charter in 'lil
Abner who went around with a cloud with rain and lightning coming out of it
hanging over his head all of the time. Maybe this week will be better.

Way to go Wayne.................I just got my last state, ND, couple of weeks ago
but must admit it was with 80 watts. I don't think the 80 watts helped much though.
Alaska, SD and ND were the tough ones for me. If you have not tried it yet,
consider watching for the contests that occur nearly every weekend that are
often specific to a state..........good way to find folks.

Again, congratulations. See you at Ozcon 2015!

4x4 Sprint

John Lonigro

While there is still 1 month remaining for the 2014 Second Sunday Sprint (September), the annual 4x4 Sprint is coming soon (October 4). In anticipation of that, the new rules have been posted on the 4SQRP website. There is also a new spreadsheet. Please feel free to download both and read them carefully. I can answer any questions, in case the rules are not clear.

Do not use the rules or spreadsheet from the 2013 event because they are out-of-date.

I'll try to remember to send a reminder a few days before the 4x4 sprint.

Dave W7AQK,
I am interested in hearing the views and experiences of you and others with the Ten Tec 506 Rebel.  I probably will never buy one myself, but I am nearing completion of a Ten Tec 1320 kit.  All seems well so far!
I was disappointed though by your need to give your thoughts on firearms ownership and laws.  Yes you have the right, but is this the time and place?
  Peace.

I don’t have one, but a lot of folks are having a good bit of fun with the Rebel.  It’s pretty “Spartan”, being single band, no SSB, and any bells and whistles come from your ability with software.  There was an excellent technical presentation made at FDIM this past May about all of this, so you might try and get your hands on that for a really excellent overview of what is possible with that rig.  Some folks have been able to add SSB to the rig’s capabilities.  There has also been a good bit of info on the software in various magazines, including Sprat.

As you probably know, Ten-Tec is coming out with an upgraded model, called the Patriot.  It will have SSB, and some other improvements, but at twice the price of the Rebel.  I think that rig is currently undergoing extensive field testing, so it may be a while before you can actually order one.

As an aside, guns DO kill!  Yes, it takes human hands to make that happen, but to say otherwise is like saying drugs and alcohol are not a problem either and don’t need to be regulated!  I’m not opposed to guns per se—I have three myself—but our laws on, and availability of, guns  in general are stupid!

Re: nets

Cliff Fox (KU4GW)

I sometimes get on 3895 on 75 meter phone with a local group from 0900-1100 UTC and Thursday morning the band was so bad I could barely hear anyone, even the guys who run legal limit. Then when I went to check in on the Sunrise Net at 1300 on 7123 I had the net control station in Florida at 579, but by the time he got back around to me he was 229 and a short time later the whole band fell out and I couldn't hear a soul! About as bad as it gets! Hope it was just a brief geomagnetic disturbance.

Jeremy Utley

The idea behind it really interests me, as a technology/computer guy.  Honestly, if I didn’t already have a FT-817, I’d probably have already taken the plunge.  Last month’s QST had a pretty good review on it, both as a regular transceiver, and about it’s ability to be expanded since it’s Ardruino-based.  I think the technology in it is some of the future of ham radio, honestly.

 September 13th & 14th is the annual "Summits-on-the-Air" 2014 Activity Weekend

North America SOTA Activity Weekend is a casual event involving tiny battery-powered radios on mountain summits.  It is not a contest but is intended to introduce "Summits on the Air" to newcomers with home stations who try to work summit operators during one or two days. There are no rules regarding power levels, modes or number of bands worked, but please be courteous when more than one station is trying to talk to a SOTA operator on a summit.  The SOTA operators have just climbed mountains as high as 14,000 feet; they use low power; and they don't receive on split frequencies.

Check SOTAWATCH.org to spot who is on which mountain.  Summits are numbered, and you can hover your cursor over the number to see the name and point value for each summit.  Expect the website to show activity near 7.032, 7.185, 10.110, 14.342, 18.095, 18.155, 21.350, 24.905, 24.955, 28.420, 146.52, 446.00, and 61 Khz up from the bottom of 20, 15 and 10 meters CW.  Participants are invited to collect points toward certificates and trophies offered by the twelve-year-old international SOTA group (SOTA.org.UK).  As we learned in past years, this is a barrel of fun for both hill climbers and home operators.  See you then.
