I'm seriously thinking about attending, is there
water and bathrooms near the camping sites?

At 10:02 AM 8/18/2014, you wrote:

The Big Brutus weekend is coming up fast, it's Sept 12 and 13. The
campground electrical and water hookups and the camping fee is $15. $10
for tents with no hookups. I just made my reservation for Friday and
Saturday nights, leaving on Sunday.

Pse make your reservations soon, there are only 10 sites with hookups. .
Hunting season starts that weekend and we need to beat the hunters in
reserving the spots. Also if you're a fisherman, the flood strip mine
pits are excellent fishing, you'll probably limit out on big largemouths.

Should we do a mini hamfest like last year? Who all is planning to come?

Yup, Lloyd had super ears there.  I needed Hawaii to get the last state for 160 meter QRP CW WAS and ran a sked with him.  He stayed up late his time to make the sked and he had no problem hearing my 5 watts from the KX3 on 160.  It was about 6 a.m. here and I think around  1 a.m. there.   It's a good thing I had a sked with him as the pileup on him just after we worked was horrendous.

I have KH6LC in my log for just about every contest I've ever been in as well so he's extremely active and a heck of a nice guy.

Well I just downloaded my confirmed contacts from LOTW and I see that Lloyd (KH6LC) has confirmed our QSO, YEAH!!! I looked at his web site and It's not surprising he managed to copy me, I recon with that antenna set-up he could probably hear a gnat fart off the coast of Maine in a Noreaster! quite some set-up.
I e-mailed Sam re an Alaska QSO, just need someone in RI, anyone???
By the way, I had to give Lloyd the "full Gallon" (5 watts) but we made it. He really is a super operator. Shame I couldn't claim 1KMPW but hey, it's in the log at 5 watts.

Way to go Wayne.................I just got my last state, ND, couple of weeks ago
but must admit it was with 80 watts. I don't think the 80 watts helped much though.
Alaska, SD and ND were the tough ones for me. If you have not tried it yet,
consider watching for the contests that occur nearly every weekend that are
often specific to a state..........good way to find folks.

Again, congratulations. See you at Ozcon 2015!

4x4 Sprint

John Lonigro

While there is still 1 month remaining for the 2014 Second Sunday Sprint (September), the annual 4x4 Sprint is coming soon (October 4). In anticipation of that, the new rules have been posted on the 4SQRP website. There is also a new spreadsheet. Please feel free to download both and read them carefully. I can answer any questions, in case the rules are not clear.

Do not use the rules or spreadsheet from the 2013 event because they are out-of-date.

I'll try to remember to send a reminder a few days before the 4x4 sprint.

I am interested in hearing the views and experiences of you and others with the Ten Tec 506 Rebel.  I probably will never buy one myself, but I am nearing completion of a Ten Tec 1320 kit.  All seems well so far!
I was disappointed though by your need to give your thoughts on firearms ownership and laws.  Yes you have the right, but is this the time and place?

As you probably know, Ten-Tec is coming out with an upgraded model, called the Patriot.  It will have SSB, and some other improvements, but at twice the price of the Rebel.  I think that rig is currently undergoing extensive field testing, so it may be a while before you can actually order one.

Cliff Fox (KU4GW)

I sometimes get on 3895 on 75 meter phone with a local group from 0900-1100 UTC and Thursday morning the band was so bad I could barely hear anyone, even the guys who run legal limit. Then when I went to check in on the Sunrise Net at 1300 on 7123 I had the net control station in Florida at 579, but by the time he got back around to me he was 229 and a short time later the whole band fell out and I couldn't hear a soul! About as bad as it gets! Hope it was just a brief geomagnetic disturbance.

The idea behind it really interests me, as a technology/computer guy.  Honestly, if I didn’t already have a FT-817, I’d probably have already taken the plunge.  Last month’s QST had a pretty good review on it, both as a regular transceiver, and about it’s ability to be expanded since it’s Ardruino-based.  I think the technology in it is some of the future of ham radio, honestly.
