Re: Monday Night Sideband Net Checkins

Bobby, The net is called every Monday night at 7:30pm on 40meters.  NCS is myself, Jeremy NQ0M (using the WQ5RP callsign) – I start at 7285 and tune down for a clear freq, and usually post to QRPSpots once I find my frequency so everyone can find me.  I usually run a little above QRP power levels (I set my CW carrier power on my 920 to about 20-30 watts before switching to LSB mode).

Not a problem Bill - I simply didn't want anyone to construe the Mfj-9400 series of rigs as "something more" than they are, which are good little QRP-level single band SSB rigs that can handle CW reasonably well with a couple of simple mods (I consider the RIT mod by Phil Salas, AD5X is essential, for instance). I would love for MFJ to come up with a 2 or 3 band rig in the same vein, but the cost would approach that for a FT-817.................as the new LNR rig will do.

Hi Lee,

Thanks for your prompt reply - direct and to the point. Since I am not
in the market for any new, store bought radios I had no Idea they were
making them with limitations like that. All of my gear covers complete
band(s) in any mode the radio has and all of them will go outside the
band and sub-band limits. The users are responsible for using the right
(legal) modes on the right bands and sub-bands. It would just never
occur to me that radios are made some "other" way.

There is a small blue box from the far east that is a 20m ssb rig.  A young guy brought one to our Field Day and operated it.  Likely someone here can identify it by name?

Also consider your home station rig but that may need a hookup to use.

Hi Doc!

Try this http://www.4sqrp.com/Kit_Helpers.php. I am going blind and used this recently for my Rock Mite 40. I'm very satisfied with the results.

As far as bands, I like all three for pretty much the same reasons, however if I were stranded on a desert island, and you told me I could only have one band it would be 40 m. Good luck!

Hi,

Why would PSK-31 on an SSB rig be "difficult at best"? I must have
overlooked something. I have only ever tried it on three or four rigs.
Rtty, too. AMTOR, too. Packet too. What's the snag on that MFJ? Once
upon a time I would have suggested merely being MFJ was trouble but I'm

Re: One Freq

Jeremy Utley

If you can manage to squeeze a little more out of the budget, I’d recommend trying to find a used FT-817 (original model) – I think I bought mine from Arnie for $400 - $450.  You get all the bands that way – CW, SSB, Digital, general coverage receive, plus 6/2m/440 all in one nice little package.  Also might look for used IC-718’s or Alinco DX-SR8’s.

If you wouldn’t mind going CW only, the TenTec Rebel might be an option – it’s 20m/40m CW-only (but you can modify it for JT65).  And if you don’t mind trying out a China Import, you have the Xiegu X1M available from Ed at Import Communications available for $350.

Just a couple of thoughts!

If I had enough confidence in my own kit-building skills, I’d happily build a kit for someone in your situation – but I’m just not there yet.

My XYL and I now have a new Casita 17ft travel trailer.  I have 2M/440 in it and want to put in a QRP SSB rig...inexpensive type.  The MFJ 94xx series looks pretty good but are single band as you may know.  At home, I do almost all of my HF on 40, 20, and 17.  I really like 17 because there are no contests.  I like 20 because it has a lot of PSK-31 activity. 40 seems to be best as an "all around" and works great NVIS.  Another BTW, I have an old laptop dedicated to radio...mostly logging and PSK, with a few op aids.  It will go in the Casita, too.

I have good antennas for portable work and do not do mobile, except 2M.

I'd like your input on what band I should pick for HF in the RV.  Or ideas of other QRP SSB rigs in the <$300 range...due to nerve injury (disabled vet) in my right hand, I cannot build kits...no fine motor control.
